User:The Jacketed Terrapin/Major characters by their debut role
Here is a list of all playable characters (and other important characters, as well) by how they debuted in the Super Smash Bros. series. Here are all the methods on what they debuted as:
- As a Fighter: This character debuted as a fighter.
- As a Summon Character: This character debuted as a character spawned from a summoning item, whether it's through a Poké Ball or an Assist Trophy.
- As an Item: This character debuted as an item. Items exclusive to certain stages will go under "Stage Characters", instead.
- As an Enemy/Boss: This character debuted as an enemy or a boss. See the "Enemies and Bosses" section for more information.
- As a Moveset Element: This character debuted as part of a character's moveset, whether they're in one of their moves, their taunts, or even their on-screen appearances or victory poses.
- As a Stage Character: This character debuted as part of a stage, whether they're a background character, a hazard, or even a platform on the stage.
- As a Collectible: This character debuted as a collectible item, whether it's a trophy, a sticker, a Mii costume, or a spirit.
- Other: This character debuted via a method that does not fit under any of the above categories.
Notes:
- Only a character's most notable role in their debut game will be listed. While a character like Isabelle may have also had a trophy in her debut game Smash 4, only her Assist Trophy role will be listed as it's more important to the game.
- Trophies take priority over both stickers and Mii Costumes, while spirits take priority over Mii Costumes. For example, while Bowser Jr. had both a trophy and a few stickers in his debut game Brawl, only his trophy will be listed.
- These only include actual physical appearances of the character themselves. Stuff such as mere mentions (such as Peach in Mario's Smash 64 bio) or alternate costumes that only resemble a specific character (such as Mario's "Wario" costume) will not count.
Playable Characters
Note: Ludwig is separated due to being the only alternate costume character to have appeared in the series prior to his playable debut.

Enemies and Bosses
Note:
- This will only include enemies found in Modes such as Melee's Adventure Mode, The Subspace Emissary, Smash Run, and World of Light. Stage enemies or bosses such as Yellow Devil and Metal Face will not be included.
- No enemies or bosses original to the Super Smash Bros. series. I'm also excluding altered forms of enemies made for the Smash series (so stuff like the golden Banzai Bills in Master Hand's Finger Bullet attack in the original Super Smash Bros. or the shadow enemies in Master Fortress in for Wii U will not count as appearances).
- When an enemy's name is in Bold in the other categories, that means that the enemy listed is a boss in its appearances as an enemy. Italics means that the enemy debuted as both an enemy and a more gameplay-important role in the same game.
