| 20 | Super Star | •Rosalina & Luma |
9,200 | Peach's Castle | •Attack Power ↑ •Temporary Invincibility •Item: Super Star |
•The enemy will occasionally be invincible when the enemy's at high damage •All fighters are easy to launch •The enemy's FS Meter charges quickly |
Main Theme - Super Mario 64 |
The yellow Rosalina & Luma represent the Super Star, a yellow star-shaped item with simple black eyes, similar in design to the Lumas; the Super Star itself also appears as an item in the battle. In keeping with the star theme, Rosalina’s Final Smash causes her to summon a very similar-looking one, and Princess Peach’s Castle, in Super Mario 64, serves as the hub for the player’s quest to collect Power Stars. The rules of the battle recreate the abilities of the Super Star, which grant the player temporary invincibility and the ability to defeat enemies in one hit.
| ||
| 21 | Metal Mario | •Metal Mario |
9,600 | The Great Cave Offensive (Battlefield form) | N/A | •The enemy is slow but has increased defense and attack •The enemy is metal |
Metal Battle |
Appropriately, Metal Mario is represented by a metal Mario. The stage resembles Meta Crystal, a stage from the original Super Smash Bros.'s 1P Game where the player fights Metal Mario; it being in its Battlefield form, combined with the music, makes reference to Melee's Adventure Mode, which features a battle against a metal Mario (and, once he is unlocked, Luigi) on Battlefield, with the background track playing. The battle conditions further make reference to the fight against Metal Mario in Super Smash Bros., where he had both slow movement and increases in both attack and defense.
| ||
| 22 | Boo Mario | •Mario |
1,900 | Dracula's Castle (hazards off) | •Hazard: High Gravity •Hazard: Low Gravity •Invisibility |
•The enemy is invisible •Your jumping power decreases when the enemy's at high damage •The enemy is less affected by gravity |
Castle / Boss Fortress - Super Mario World / SMB 3 |
The black Mario represents Boo Mario, whose design includes his signature cap and facial features. The stage represents the interior of the haunted mansion areas featured in the Ghostly Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy and the Boo Moon Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy 2, where the Boo Mushroom, which turns Mario into Boo Mario, can be obtained. The music track contains the fortress theme song from Super Mario Bros. 3, referencing how Boos first appeared in World 2's Fortress level in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Invisibility rule references Boo Mario's ability to turn invisible, allowing him to pass through certain obstacles. The Low Gravity and High Gravity reference Boo Mario's ability to quickly ascend in the air and slowly descend.
| ||
| 23 | Rock Mario | •Metal Jigglypuff |
4,200 | Mario Galaxy (Battlefield form) | N/A | •The enemy's neutral special has increased power •The enemy favors neutral specials •The enemy is metal |
Melty Monster |
The Metal Jigglypuff represents Rock Mario. This form allows Mario to transform into a gray, spherical boulder and roll forward at high speeds, plowing through enemies. Jigglypuff’s Rollout works similarly, and incidentally is even a Rock-type move in the Pokémon'’ series. The music track comes from Melty Monster Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2, which makes extensive use of the Rock Mushroom.
| ||
| 25 | Fox Luigi | •Tail Luigi |
9,300 | Mushroom Kingdom U | •Hazard: Heavy Wind | •Dangerously high winds are in effect | Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. 3 (Remix) |
Fox Luigi is Luigi’s form after he picks up a Super Leaf. His design resembles the kitsune, a legendary shape-shifting fox from Japanese mythology, more than a tanuki (which inspired Mario’s Super Leaf form, Raccoon Mario). The music track is a remix of the ground theme from Super Mario Bros. 3, the game in which the Super Leaf debuted. Luigi's usage of Fireball could reference that kitsune, in Japanese folklore, can conjure fireballs named kitsunebi.
| ||
| 26 | Flying Squirrel Toad | •Tail Mii Swordfighter |
3,700 | Mushroom Kingdom U (Ω form) | N/A | •The enemy favors down specials in the air •The enemy has increased jump power |
Ground Theme - New Super Mario Bros. U |
The Mii Swordfighter represents Flying Squirrel Toad; it is equipped with a Super Leaf tail, referencing how the Super Leaf and Super Acorn both grant the user the ability to fly temporarily. The Mii Swordfighter's Mushroom Hat references the yellow Toad's mushroom-shaped cap, while the Monkey Suit represents the Flying Squirrel costume, which turns yellow when worn by Yellow Toad. The stage and the music track represent Acorn Plains, the first stage in New Super Mario Bros. U, the game in which the Super Acorn debuted. The battle conditions make a combined reference to Flying Squirrel Toad's ability to propel upwards before descending downwards.
| ||
| 27 | Baby Peach | •Tiny Isabelle •Mario |
3,600 | Princess Peach's Castle | N/A | •Defeat the main fighter to win •The enemy favors dash attacks •The enemy has increased move speed |
Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. (Melee) |
The tiny pink Isabelle represents Baby Peach, the infant form of Princess Peach. The Mario minion represents his appearance in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time; in that same game, Baby Peach retreats to her future self's castle to escape from the invading Shroob forces. The first battle condition references Princess Peach's iconic "damsel-in-distress" role in the Mario series, where Mario must protect and/or rescue Princess Peach from being kidnapped by enemies. Isabelle's favored dash attack depicts her tripping and falling while throwing the flowerpot, referencing Baby Peach's infancy age, where babies are known for stumbling while learning to walk.
| ||
| 29 | Peach (Wedding) | •Peach •Mario |
9,900 | New Donk City Hall | •Flowery | •Defeat the main fighter to win •You constantly take minor damage •The enemy tends to avoid conflict |
Break Free (Lead The Way) |
The white Peach represents her appearance in Super Mario Odyssey, where she is depicted wearing the white Lochlady Dress and the silver crown Bonneter, Tiara; Mario's appearance utilizes his own unlockable wedding outfit from the same game.
| ||
| 30 | Bowser (Wedding) | •Bowser •Ally: Peach |
9,700 | New Donk City Hall | N/A | •You lose if your CPU ally is KO'd •The enemy favors dash attacks •The enemy has increased attack power •The enemy has increased move speed |
Underground Moon Caverns |
The grey Bowser represents his appearance in Super Mario Odyssey, where he is depicted wearing a white wedding tuxedo with a spiky design. The white Peach ally represents her appearance in Odyssey, where Bowser attempts to force her into marrying him. The music track is the theme for the Underground Moon Caverns in Odyssey, as Mario has to travel to the Moon Kingdom in order to stop the forced marriage. The first battle condition requires the player to protect the Peach ally fighter from being KO'd by Bowser, referencing Peach’s damsel-in-distress role in the same game. Bowser's jumping, side kick dash attack, and increased attack power and move speed reference Bowser's boss battles in Odyssey, where he will quickly jump around the battle arena and use powerful physical attacks.
| ||
| 31 | Toad | •Mii Brawler |
3,600 | Princess Peach's Castle | •Item: Mushrooms | •The enemy favors side specials | Plucky Pass Beginnings |
The Mii Brawler and the Mushroom items represent Toad, a member of the similarly-named race of humanoids. Princess Peach's Castle, the main hub area from Super Mario 64, featured the first 3D appearance of the Toads, who serve as Princess Peach's attendants. The first game to feature a playable Toad was Super Mario Bros. 2, whose central mechanic is the ability to grab items and enemies, hence the Mii Brawler's favoring of Suplex, a grab. The music, meanwhile, comes from the first level of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, a prominent solo appearance for Toad.
| ||
| 33 | Toadette | •Villager •Mii Brawler |
2,600 | The Great Cave Offensive (Battlefield form) | N/A | •The enemy is easily distracted by items | Plucky Pass Beginnings |
The pink Villager represents Toadette, a short female Toad who wears a pink outfit. The Mii Brawler minion's costume represents Captain Toad, alongside whom Toadette adventures in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker; the two are distracted by items, referencing how both Captain Toad and Toadette can use different items to defeat enemies in the same game. The Great Cave Offensive may be the stage in this battle due to similarities between the game mode in Kirby Super Star and the goal of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, both of which encourage the player to find and collect hidden treasures.
| ||
| 34 | Toadsworth | •Mario |
1,900 | Princess Peach's Castle | •Item: Mushrooms | •Take your strongest team into this no-frills battle | Ricco Harbor |
The yellow Mario and the Mushroom items represent Toadsworth, an elderly member of the Toads who has a mustache; Mario's yellow Builder Helmet references Toadsworth's beige mushroom-shaped cap. The stage references Toadsworth's role as Princess Peach's steward in the Super Mario series, and the music comes from Super Mario Sunshine, Toadsworth's debut game.
| ||
| 35 | Waluigi | •Luigi |
9,200 | Peach's Castle | •Assist Trophy Enemies (Waluigi) | •Hostile assist trophies will appear | Waluigi Pinball - Mario Kart DS |
Luigi's purple costume is based on his antagonistic rival, Waluigi. The song in this fight comes from Mario Kart DS, in which it plays on a pinball-themed race course named after Waluigi. This could be further referenced by the layout of Peach’s Castle, which features a Bumper and two sloped platforms resembling pinball slingshots.
| ||
| 36 | Goomba | •Tiny Donkey Kong Team |
1,800 | Mushroom Kingdom (Battlefield form) | N/A | •Defeat an army of fighters | Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. |
The tiny red Donkey Kong represents the Goomba, a small, brown mushroom-like enemy who is depicted with a scowling face. The stage is based on Super Mario Bros., the game in which the Goombas debuted.
| ||
| 37 | Koopa Troopa | •Squirtle |
1,700 | Golden Plains | •Defense ↑ •Item Tidal Wave •Item: Green Shell |
•The enemy has increased defense after a little while •Certain items will appear in large numbers •The enemy is easily distracted by items |
Main Theme - New Super Mario Bros. |
The green Squirtle represents the Koopa Troopa, a turtle-like enemy that commonly wears a green shell, which appears as the item. The increased defense references how the Koopa Troopa retreats into its shell after getting hit by a physical attack, preventing it from being destroyed this way.
| ||
| 38 | Hammer Bro | •Yoshi |
3,400 | Golden Plains (Battlefield form) | •Assist Trophy Enemies (Hammer Bro) | •Hostile assist trophies will appear when the enemy's at high damage •The enemy favors up specials |
Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. 3 (Remix) |
The yellow Yoshi represents the Hammer Bro, a yellow reptilian enemy wearing green shoes. Yoshi's usage of Egg Throw references the Hammer Bro's ability to throw hammers in overhead arcs.
| ||
| 39 | Lakitu & Spiny | •Iggy •Tiny Bowser |
3,400 | Mushroom Kingdom | N/A | •Defeat an army of fighters | Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. |
Iggy represents Lakitu, a bespectacled Koopa enemy, with his Koopa Clown Car representing Lakitu's cloud. The tiny red Bowser represents the Spiny, a small enemy with a red spiky shell that Lakitu constantly drops onto the ground as long as they’re on-screen. The stage is based on Super Mario Bros., the game in which both enemies debuted.
| ||
| 40 | Blooper | •Tiny Inkling |
2,600 | Delfino Plaza (Battlefield form) | •Hazard: Low Gravity | •Timed battle (1:30) •Gravity is reduced •The enemy tends to avoid conflict |
Underwater Theme - Super Mario Bros. |
Bloopers are small, squid-like enemies that appear often in the underwater levels of 2D Mario series platformers—the music playing in this fight is a remix of the underwater level music from the original Super Mario Bros., which debuted Bloopers. The behavior of such levels is recreated by the drastically reduced gravity in this fight, and Inklings represent the Bloopers on account of their squid shape-shifting ability.
| ||
| 41 | Bullet Bill | •Captain Falcon Team |
1,800 | Mushroom Kingdom | •Item Tidal Wave •Item: Bullet Bill |
•Certain items will appear in large numbers •The enemy is easily distracted by items |
Airship Theme - Super Mario Bros. 3 |
Bullet Bills are black, bullet-shaped enemies that constantly fly forwards; they appear in Ultimate as a user-transforming item, and spawn often in this fight. They debuted in the original Super Mario Bros., informing the stage choice, and reappeared as frequent hazards in the Airship stages of Super Mario Bros. 3, hence the music choice. Captain Falcon might represent Bullet Bills due to their high speed and constant propulsion—shared aspects with the high-speed machines piloted in F-Zero races.
| ||
| 43 | Shy Guy | •Mii Brawler •Tail Mii Gunner •Mii Swordfighter |
1,500 | Mushroom Kingdom II (Battlefield form) | •Item: Throwing Types | •The enemy favors neutral specials •The enemy is easily distracted by items |
Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. 2 |
In addition to using the Shy Guy's mask itself, the Mii Fighters' low voice represents the Shy Guy's trademark low voice. The Mii Gunner with a Super Leaf references the Fly Guy, a Shy Guy variant with a propeller attached to their hood that allows them to fly through the air. The stage and music track reference World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. 2, the game in which the Shy Guys first appeared.
| ||
| 44 | Pidgit | •Peach |
3,600 | Mushroom Kingdom II | N/A | •The enemy starts the battle with a Rocket Belt •The enemy has increased jump power |
Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. 2 |
Pidgits are bird-like enemies from Super Mario Bros. 2 that attack by swooping downwards from atop magic carpets. Incidentally, they appear on Mushroom Kingdom II where this fight is held, with their magic carpets serving as platforms. Peach represents them in this fight, with her Rocket Belt and Float giving her a great degree of aerial movement potential in reference to the Pidgit’s swooping attacks.
| ||
| 46 | Mouser | •Pikachu |
2,000 | Mushroom Kingdom II (Battlefield form) | •Item: Bob-omb | •The enemy is easily distracted by items •The enemy starts the battle with a Bob-omb |
Boss Theme - Super Mario Bros. 2 |
Mouser is a recurring boss from Super Mario Bros. 2, who attacks by throwing bombs at the player. He is represented in this fight by a larger-than-average Pikachu. In addition to being a fellow rodent, the glasses worn on the brim of Pikachu’s hat in this alternate costume resemble the pointy shades Mouser wears.
| ||
| 47 | Wart | •King K. Rool •Peach |
4,000 | Skyworld (Battlefield form) | •Hazard: Slumber Floor | •Defeat the main fighter to win •The floor is sleep-inducing |
Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros. 2 |
Wart is the main antagonist and final boss of Super Mario Bros. 2, who commands its enemies in an effort to conquer the Dream World in which the game takes place. King K. Rool represents Wart, on account of both characters being evil kings with large bodies, crowns, and capes; Peach, meanwhile, references the Dream Machine, a machine that constantly spouts out vegetables which the player must use to defeat Wart in the final battle against him. The sleep-inducing floor references that Super Mario Bros. 2 takes place in a dream, and Skyworld represents World 7, which contains the game’s final levels, and is set high in the sky amid a series of clouds and castles.
| ||
| 48 | Boo | •Kirby |
1,800 | Mushroom Kingdom U (Slide Lift Tower) | •Invisibility | •The enemy is invisible •The enemy's shield has extra durability |
Main Theme - Luigi's Mansion (Brawl) |
The white Kirby represents the Boo, a white, spherical ghost enemy whose design includes simple back eyes, stubby arms, and has the ability to float in midair. The stage represents World 2-Fortress, the second fortress stage in Super Mario Bros. 3, and the level in which the Boos first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3. The music track is a remix of the theme to the Luigi's Mansion series, which features the Boos as the main antagonists. The Invisibility rule references the Boo's shy personality, which causes them to turn transparent and invincible when faced by the player.
| ||
| 50 | Bob-omb | •Kirby |
3,500 | Mushroom Kingdom | •Item: Bob-omb | •The enemy's throwing-type items have increased power •The enemy has increased move speed |
Airship Theme - Super Mario Bros. 3 |
The purple Kirby represents the Bob-omb, a dark spherical enemy with bright, simple eyes.
| ||
| 51 | Chain Chomp | •Metal Pac-Man |
4,000 | Yoshi's Island (Battlefield form) | •Assist Trophy Enemies (Chain Chomp) | •Hostile assist trophies will appear •The enemy favors side specials •The enemy is metal |
Main Theme - Super Mario 64 |
The metal Pac-Man represents the Chain Chomp, a spherical enemy made of dark-colored metal. Pac-Man's favored Power Pellet references the Chain Chomp's ability to dash at the end of their chain while performing a bite attack; the move transforms Pac-Man into his classic pie-shaped form, which closely resembles the Chain Chomp's appearance. The music track is a remix of the theme for Bob-omb Battlefield, in which one of the collectible Power Stars necessitates Mario freeing a Chain Chomp in order for it to destroy the fence behind it.

Trivia
- Mario, The Legend of Zelda, EarthBound, Ice Climber, and Pac-Man are the only universes represented by a fighter to use in-game sprite art for any spirits.
- The Mario universe features the most amount of new spirits added through downloadable content, with 18 in total.
- Dr. Mario and Piranha Plant are not featured as puppet fighters in any Mario spirit battle, making the Mario series one of three playable universes to not feature all playable characters from the series in their spirit battles, with the other two being Final Fantasy and Fatal Fury.
- Metal Mario, Eggplant Man, Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Kong, and Peach (Mario Golf: Super Rush) are the only Mario spirits whose spirit battles do not play music track from the Mario universe.
- The Baby Peach, Waluigi, and Wanda spirits are generically listed as being from the "Super Mario Series", despite not debuting in a mainline Super Mario game outside of cameos.
- This also applies to the Peach & Stella and Swordfighter Peach spirits, as they originate from Princess Peach: Showtime!, but are listed as from the Super Mario series despite the game being a new spinoff similar to Super Princess Peach, while the latter is listed as a separate game rather than part of other series.
- The Captain Toad and Flies & Hand spirits are the only Mario spirits who are listed as part of a series within the Mario universe, despite being released in a singular game outside of re-releases.
- The Flies & Hand spirit is listed as part of the "Mario Paint Series", although Mario Paint does not feature any sequels (excluding the Satellaview re-releases Mario Paint BS Ban and Mario Paint Yuushou Naizou Ban). Super Mario Maker takes many elements from Paint, including the Flies & Hand, and began development as a sequel, but is not considered as such.
- There is, however, a set of Mario Paint spiritual successors called Mario Artist on the Nintendo 64DD, but the 4 released installments of the series do not feature the Flies & Hand in any form either.
- The Flies & Hand spirit is listed as part of the "Mario Paint Series", although Mario Paint does not feature any sequels (excluding the Satellaview re-releases Mario Paint BS Ban and Mario Paint Yuushou Naizou Ban). - Prior to the 1.1.0 update, the King Boo spirit was ordered between Poltergust 5000 and Polterpup rather than being ordered right after Boo, being part of the Luigi's Mansion series.
- Additionally, prior to the 1.1.0 update, the ordering of Antasma and Papercraft Mario were swapped in order to preserve the chronological order of the Mario & Luigi series.
- The Odyssey spirit battle states that the enemy is difficult to launch as a battle condition; however, the game erroneously applies the "easy to launch" effect instead, as evidenced by the floatier launch physics associated with it, and the fact that in the short window before the effect activates, Jigglypuff takes less knockback. This error also defeats the intended purpose of the battle, where the opponent is expected to break Jigglypuff's shield, as it is easy to KO it with knockback.

- The Rabbid Kong spirit's artwork actually depicts a corrupted, alternate form named Mega Rabbid Kong, appearing only in the Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: Donkey Kong Adventure expansion DLC.

- The Golden Dash Mushroom, Dice Block, and River Survival spirits are the first DLC spirits tied to a limited-time event on the Spirit Board, and also the first DLC spirits available without the requirement of an additional game's save data, the first being the Partner Eevee and Partner Pikachu spirits in the Pokémon series, which originally required save data of Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!/Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! on the Nintendo Switch.
- Although the name of the Golden Dash Mushroom spirit originates from Mario Party: Island Tour, its artwork and spirit battle are derived from the Mario Kart series, where the item is generally referred to as the Golden Mushroom; however, the item has been referred to as the Golden Dash Mushroom in Europe as of Mario Kart 7.
- The Golden Dash Mushroom spirit's series is generically listed as the "Super Mario Series" instead of the two series mentioned above.
- The Golden Dash Mushroom spirit's effect is dissimilar to its effect in either series; it turns the player giant, making it closer to the Mega Mushroom.
- Despite the Dice Block and River Survival spirits originating from the Mario Party series, their spirits' series is listed as the "Super Mario Series". This is despite the fact that the MC Ballyhoo & Big Top spirit is listed as part of the "Mario Party Series".
