Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Greninja's model features a slightly more subdued color scheme.

Attributes

  • Buff Like all characters, Greninja's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.

Ground attacks

  • Buff Greninja has a new down tilt: a downward sweep with its left hand. It launches at a more upward angle, improving its combo potential.
  • Change Dash attack has an altered animation: Greninja no longer does a full spin, now only stopping half way.
  • Change Greninja now uses water kunais instead of water blades for its up smash, similar to Ash's Greninja in the anime.

Special moves

  • Change Shadow Sneak has a new animation when used. The attacking part of the move is a forward kick instead.
  • Nerf The "eyes" of Greninja's shadow when using Shadow Sneak flash just before release, making it easier for opponents to predict and work around the attack.
  • Change Substitute has more vibrant particles when activated.
  • Buff Substitute activates faster, allowing for an easier hit.
  • Change Greninja now turns into Ash-Greninja during its Final Smash. Whether it's an aesthetic change to Secret Ninja Attack or a completely different Final Smash is currently unknown.

Trivia

  • Greninja's new character portrait resembles its air dodge animation.
  • Greninja is the only playable member of a regional starter Pokémon trio to not be part of Pokémon Trainer's rotation.
  • Coincidentally, Greninja's fighter number, 50, is the same as the number of its costume in Super Mario Maker.
  • On the Japanese Smash Blog, Greninja was misspelled Geckuga, rather than it’s actual name, Gekkouga.
