Changes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Aesthetics
- Leaf, the female Pokémon Trainer from FireRed/LeafGreen, makes her first appearance as an alternate costume.
- Squirtle appears to have a new dash animation that involves riding a water wave.
- Squirtle has a more upright stance.
- Triple Finish has a different text box and animations.
Attributes
- The Stamina mechanic has been removed, eliminating the necessity of switching out Pokémon to restore their power.
- Squirtle has a much faster running speed.
Normal Moves
- Squirtle's forward aerial now has additional water effects alongside the kick.
- Squirtle's full jab combo and forward tilt do slightly more damage. 9% -> 9.4,. 6% -> 6.2%
- Squirtle has a new down tilt. While it only hits once, it's much stronger and has further reach. 5% -> 10.1%.
- Squirtle's up smash activates faster and reaches much higher, along with being slightly stronger.
- Squirtle's forward smash is much stronger, even uncharged. 14% -> 19.3% uncharged.
- Ivysaur's forward tilt reaches further and does far more damage.
- Ivysaur's down smash has greatly increased width.
- Ivysaur's neutral aerial has a new animation where it points its plant towards the screen and spins its leaves. It hits 6 times.
Special moves
- Water Gun charges much faster and has immensely more distance, covering all of Battlefield fully charged and even able to kill off-stage opponents by pushing them into the blast zone.
- Withdraw is much faster and stronger, dealing 11% rather than 8%.
- Withdraw now stops on impact, preventing it from racking up further damage.
- Bullet Seed now has a finishing blow.
- Pokémon Change can now be used in the air, and is much quicker. Like in Brawl, it also offers brief invincibility upon switching out, though the quicker switch time allows it to potentially combo into another Pokémon's moves. It also allows the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon to essentially choose the recovery that suits a situation best. It also gives the Pokémon an "extra air dodge".
- Pokémon Change can only be used out of hitstun if the Pokémon lands first, preventing exploiting of the move's intangibility.
- Excessive use of Pokémon Change will result in it granting no invincibility for a period of time.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
These changes only affect Charizard, who was a single fighter in the previous game.
- Now that it is once again part of the Pokémon Trainer rotation, Charizard's down special, Rock Smash, has been replaced with Pokemon Change, effectively eliminating Rock Smash from its moveset.
- Similarly, its Final Smash was reverted from Mega Charizard X to Triple Finish.
- Charizard's mid air jumps carry him higher than before.
- Charizard's jab combo now requires specific timing of each input to deal the maximum damage.
- Charizard's Flamethrower is immensely larger and far stronger because of it. It also doesn't decrease in size as fast, and is still usable at it's smallest.
- Charizard's down air has increased ending lag.
- Charizard's forward smash is slightly stronger. 17% -> 19%
- Charizard's back air has greatly decreased the start up.
- Charizard's neutral air makes the flame on his tail even larger, making it easier to sweetspot. It's also stronger both with and without the sweetspot. It's also faster. Tail: 9% - 12%. Flame: 12% -> 15%.
- Charizard's up tilt is much shorter.
- Charizard's Flare Blitz is far stronger, from 19% -> 26%. It also deals much more knockback.
- Flare Blitz causes Charizard to enter a tumble animation for a longer period of time after impact.
- Fly's distance has greatly increased, allowing Charizard to recover to the ledge of Battlefield from the stage's lowest point.
