He's not very fast, but he's one of few heavyweight fighters with great recovery. Apparently, a defeat by Kirby inspired him to train hard to learn a move called Hovering, which allows him to float after taking a deep breath.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  • Change King Dedede's clothing and general design is more cartoonish, with higher contrast colors and simplified detailing on clothing.
  • Change Normal map changes to the star textures on his hammer give the illusion that they protrude slightly more, as depicted in his official artwork.
  • Change His clothes have been given more detail. The fur on his coat and hat appears fluffier and more detailed, and his obi has more depth.
  • Change Like many other characters, King Dedede is more expressive, both with his face and especially his movements.
  • Change Down taunt now has a more exaggerated animation.
  • Change Hammer spinning victory pose now finishes with his hammer transforming into the Jet Hammer.
  • Change King Dedede closes his eyes partially during his crouching animation.

Attributes

  • Buff Like all characters, King Dedede's jumpsquat animation now takes 3 frames to complete, a massive improvement over its previous 6 frames.

Ground attacks

  • Buff Neutral infinite's finisher deals significantly more knockback, and its loop hits are much faster and trap opponents more easily.
  • Buff Up tilt and down tilt can be reversed upon start up.
  • Nerf Up tilt has Dedede lean forward less, seemingly reducing its initial range.
  • Buff Up tilt is faster and seems to have much less endlag.
  • Buff Forward tilt has an altered animation and lower ending lag.
  • Buff King Dedede's up smash has a larger hitbox, making it more likely to hit nearby opponents.
  • Buff King Dedede's side smash appears to come out faster.
  • Change King Dedede's dash attack seems to skid further. However, in the gameplay footage that it is seen in, it is whiffed, so it is hard to truly tell whether it makes a difference or not.

Aerial moves

  • Change Neutral aerial now causes King Dedede's belly to wobble around during the move.
  • Buff Neutral aerial has less landing lag.
  • Change Forward aerial has a slightly altered animation.
  • Buff Forward aerial has reduced ending lag and landing lag.
  • Buff King Dedede has a new back aerial, which is now a horizontal hammer swing that better matches the move's hitboxes. It also has significantly less ending lag and landing lag.
  • Buff Up aerial has reduced ending lag, and has better range and power than in previous games.
  • Change Down aerial has a slightly altered animation.
  • Buff Down aerial deals much more knockback.

Throws/other attacks

  • Change Down throw has an altered animation, with him slamming his opponent face-first onto the ground.
  • Buff Up throw lets King Dedede act sooner, allowing him to set up combos with it.
  • Buff Back throw has somewhat higher knockback, increasing its KO potential.

Special moves

  • Buff King Dedede now has the ability to inhale and spit back projectiles, including his own Gordos.
  • Change Inhale has an updated, more opaque visual effect.
  • Change The Gordos spawned by Gordo Throw have smaller pupils and animated spines.
  • Buff The Gordos spawned by Gordo Throw have significantly larger hitboxes that now cover the spines, as well as increased knockback.
  • Buff The Gordos now appear to always stick to walls instead of having only a 50% chance, massively improving the consistency of his powerful ledge traps and set-ups.
  • Change Super Dedede Jump takes less time to descend.
  • Change King Dedede now has blue trails form around him when using Super Dedede Jump, indicating armor.
  • Buff Jet Hammer breaks shields when fully charged.
  • Change The fire from Jet Hammer is now blue instead of red.
  • Buff King Dedede has a new Final Smash. The Final Smash features King Dedede taking his "Masked Dedede" persona from Kirby Super Star Ultra before trapping opponents inside of a caged boxing ring, attacking them with a barrage of missiles, and launching them with his Jet Hammer. Unlike his Final Smash in Smash 4, it is not possible for opponents to escape once trapped.
  • Change King Dedede's new Final Smash deals less damage. However, it deals greater knockback.

Trivia

  • During the segment of the Nintendo E3 Direct that focused on King Dedede's Final Smash, his eyes are normal colored while he is wearing his mask. In the final game, his eyes are yellow.
  • King Dedede is one of the few characters to have a completely different Final Smash in every Smash game since the concept's introduction in Brawl, along with Pit, Zero Suit Samus and R.O.B..
