Ganondorf (ガノンドロフ, Ganondorf) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Ganondorf is once again voiced by his original voice actor, Takashi Nagasako, with updated voice clips.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

Ganondorf was granted some of the most notable changes from the transition from Smash 4 to Ultimate, with a boost in power and attack speed, and a reduction in landing lag. Many of his moves have altered animations and his smash attacks now involves him wielding his sword from the Spacetech 2000 demo, both of which further separate him from Captain Falcon and make him his own completely unique character for the first time in the series.

Aesthetics

  •   Ganondorf's appearance has reverted to his original design from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, albeit with a complete graphical overhaul to his appearance, bearing closer resemblance to his original concept art from Ocarina of Time.
  •   Ganondorf's initial dash and running animations were altered, with his arms placed more out to the side rather than next to him.
  •   Ganondorf's on-screen appearance now shows him stepping out of a liquid-like vortex of darkness.
  •   All of Ganondorf's darkness-type moves have become significantly flashier, causing large purple explosions on hit.
  •   Ganondorf has a new victory animation, which has him flip his cape before pumping a fist.

Attributes

  •   Universal frame 3 jumpsquat significantly improves Ganondorf's ground-to-air maneuverability.

Ground attacks

  •   Neutral attack no longer has a sourspot.
  •   Dash attack's animation is slightly altered.
  •   Dash attack deals more damage (14% → 17%).
  •   Up tilt has significantly faster startup (frame 81 → 60) and less ending lag (IASA 115 → 86). It also deals slightly more damage and knockback.
  •   Up tilt now has a flame effect on Ganondorf's foot during the startup, and no longer has him holding up his leg.
  •   All of Ganondorf's new smash attacks involve his sword from the 2000 Spaceworld Demo. This grants them both extra range and disjointed hitboxes.
    •   Aesthetically, his up smash and forward smash both resemble Ike's attacks, while his down smash resembles Cloud's.
  •   Ganondorf has a new forward smash, a downward sword slash. Compared to the previous forward smash, it has significantly improved range, and covers overhead.
  •   Forward smash has more startup (frame 21 → 28), more ending lag (IASA 60 → 70), and fewer active frames (frame 6 → 4).
  •   Ganondorf has a new up smash, an overhead sword swing. Compared to the previous up smash, it has less startup (frame 21 → 19), more active frames (frame 3 → 8), significantly improved range, and covers around his body.
  •   Up smash has more ending lag (IASA 42 → 62).
  •   Ganondorf has a new down smash, a low sword hilt thrust forward into a stab behind him, similar to Cloud's down smash. Compared to the previous down smash, it has less ending lag (IASA 64 → 60), sends opponents at a semi-spike angle, has a much lower hitbox placement allowing it to hit low crouching opponents, and lowers Ganondorf's hurtbox. The hitbox on the first hit that sent opponents forward and away from the second hit was removed.

Aerial attacks

  •   All aerials have significantly lower landing lag (17 frames → 10 (neutral), 22 frames → 14 (forward), 19 frames → 11 frames (up/back), 26 frames → 16 (down)).
  •   Neutral aerial has a faster startup.
  •   Forward aerial has improved reach.
  •   Forward aerial's auto-cancel window was restored.
  •   Up aerial has more start-up (frame 6 → 8) and no longer hits below and behind, significantly weakening its gimping potential while completely removing its jab reset combos.
  •   Up aerial's animation has been altered to be a one legged kick.
  •   Down aerial deals more damage (19% → 24%).
  •   Down aerial's animation has been altered to resemble Captain Falcon's down aerial in previous games.

Throws/other attacks

  •   Grab range improved.
  •   Grab starts 1 frame later (frame 7 → 8).
  •   Ganondorf now grabs with his left hand instead of his right.
  •   Pummel deals less damage but is faster.
  •   Ganondorf's forward throw is now an uppercut.
  •   Up throw deals more damage (10% → 13%).
  •   Edge attack deals 2.5% increased damage (8% → 10.5%)

Special Moves

  •   Grounded Flame Choke has less ending lag (frame 62 → 59), improving its combo capabilities.
  •   Aerial Flame Choke deals more damage (15% → 18%).
  •   Opponents can now escape aerial Flame Choke via button mashing, significantly hindering Ganoncide's utility while making it completely unsafe to use as it likely leaves Ganondorf unable to recover.
  •   Dark Dive deals more damage (13.8% → 17.3%), has higher knockback growth (90 → 120), launches opponents at a lower angle, and has lower ending lag (frame 60 → 50). In addition, opponents released by trading attacks now receive 8.4% damage.
  •   Dark Dive's landing lag glitch has been fixed.
  •   Grounded Wizard's Foot has significantly lower ending lag (frame 77 → 62). In addition, the sourspot was moved from the foot to the leg, making it easier to hit the sweetspot.
  •   Beast Ganon deals 12.4% more damage (40% → 52.4%).
  •   Beast Ganon's appearance is now that of his Ocarina of Time incarnation. Instead of slamming the ground, Beast Ganon slashes with his swords before rushing forward.

Trivia

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate marks the first time in the series that Ganondorf utilizes a sword in his base moveset.
    • However, Super Smash Bros. 4 allows him to utilize his sword, albeit as a custom move.
  • One of Ganondorf's updated clips, specifically relegated to his down smash, features him shouting "Oooh-yah!", which was a clip that notably went unused in Melee. It also made an appearance in Brawl as Ganondorf's Wii Remote selection sound.
