Samus (サムス, Samus) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She retains her modified Metroid: Other M design from SSB4.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Samus's model features a more subdued color scheme.
  • Change Samus has a new air dodge animation.
  • Change Samus has two new victory poses:
    • Change Fires a Super Missile and strikes a pose. The final pose resembles her official artwork.
    • Change Lands down and readies her Arm Cannon.
  • Change Samus's eighth costume, formerly based on Dark Samus, has been replaced with a black and yellow costume as a result of Dark Samus's inclusion as a playable fighter.

Attributes

  • Buff Samus has faster horizontal aerial mobility. She also reaches the maximum height of her jumps more quickly.
  • Buff Samus' roll is significantly faster.
  • Buff Like all characters, Samus's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.

Ground attacks

  • Nerf The first hit of neutral attack has set knockback and hitstun, meaning it will struggle to combo into other moves (including the second hit of neutral attack) and is much less safe even at higher percents.
  • Change Dash attack now produces an effect similar to the Shinespark ability.
  • Buff Dash attack has increased knockback, allowing it to KO at higher percents.
  • Nerf Dash attack has more end lag, reducing its combo potential.
  • Buff Forward smash has a slightly larger explosion sweetspot.
  • Buff Down smash deals more knockback.
  • Change Down smash has an altered ending animation, with Samus keeping more momentum from her kick.

Aerial attacks

  • Buff Neutral aerial's animation is faster.
  • Change Back aerial's animation is slightly different. Samus now faces further behind herself while kicking, and curls her leg inwards after.
  • Buff Up aerial has slightly better linking between hits.
  • Buff Down aerial has significantly reduced landing lag.
  • Change Grab aerial no longer follows Samus's vertical movement, staying in place somewhat similar to its Melee incarnation.

Throws/other attacks

  • Buff Standing grab has reduced startup and endlag.
  • Nerf Pummel is slower.
  • Buff All throws deal more damage. This allows down throw to combo more consistently, while back and up throw can now kill at reasonably high percents.
  • Change Up throw has a new animation. Samus now uses her Arm Cannon to blast her opponents upwards instead of using her Grapple Beam.

Special moves

  • Buff Charge Shot can now be charged mid-air. A mid-air charge can be cancelled by jumping or airdodging, but doing so incurs additional landing lag.
  • Change Missile and Super Missile have updated designs. Additionally, when firing, Samus's visor and armor highlights change to light blue, in reference to the original Metroid.
  • Buff Super Missile travels faster and stalls initially before flying forward, similar to her Turbo Missile custom move from Super Smash Bros. 4. It also deals more damage and has slightly less endlag.
  • Buff Samus can drift horizontally when using Missile in the air.
  • Buff Screw Attack has less lag before Samus begins falling.
  • Buff Bomb has an earlier contact hitbox.
  • Change When Samus unleashes Zero Laser, the jets on the back of her suit now vent flames as exhaust.

Trivia

  • Samus is the only female character on the game's starting roster, aside from Pikachu's female alternate costumes.
  • In her official artwork, Samus's pose matches this artwork of her alongside Anthony Higgs from Metroid: Other M. This same piece of artwork was used on the official website of Other M without Higgs.
    • Samus' arm position also bears resemblance to how they were in the first two Metroid games' cover art.
  • In the game's cover artwork and the "Everyone is Here" cast artwork, Samus' pose matches her pose on the cover of Super Metroid.
  • Samus is the only one of the Original 12 to have an Echo Fighter, being Dark Samus.
    • Samus is also the second female character to have an Echo Fighter of her, the first being Peach.
