Thwomps (ドッスン, Dossun) are enemies from the Mario series.
Origin
Thwomps made their debut in Super Mario Bros. 3 as a recurring enemy, and has become a recurring enemy in later Mario games. They are rock-like enemies known for their stone faces. They normally remain stationary in the air, but when they are approached by the player, they attack by falling on anyone attempting to pass underneath them. They are often are often found in castle levels and have a variety of subspecies such as Thwimps, Tox Boxes and Whomps.
Overview
As an assist
Thwomp appears as one of Kirby's possible Stone transformations. In 'Melee and Brawl, the Thwomp's design based on its blue design from Super Mario 64, while in Smash 4 onwards, its design is based on its from more modern Mario games.
As an Assist Trophy
Thwomp debuted in Ultimate as an Assist Trophy.
When summoned, Thwomp teleports near or above a nearby opponent. It hangs in the air and falls down when an opponent passes under it. Unlike its game appearances, however, Thwomp will teleport to a different part of the stage if left stationary. Training Mode describes the Assist Trophy: Squishes opponents caught beneath it. Can't be KO'd.
Notably, the Thwomp itself is solid and cannot be passed through, but cannot be stood on, as players will just be forced to the side should anyone attempt to fall onto one. Touching one at rest does no damage as the Thwomp's hitbox only manifests at its underside while it is falling.
The Thwomp cannot be summoned on 3D Land, Big Blue, Dream Land GB, Great Plateau Tower, King of Fighters Stadium, Mario Bros., Mishima Dojo, Mushroomy Kingdom, Pac-Land, Rainbow Cruise, Summit, and Wrecking Crew.

Despite the Super Mario 64 Thwomp's appearance as a Stone transformation, its main design from Super Mario Bros. 3 appears as a trophy.

The Thwomp trophy is exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
You can't reason with a Thwomp. If you get close enough to try, it will just drop down to block your path. In fact, you can count on Thwomps to always do exactly that—they've gotten really good at it. A Koopa I know swears they work great as a home-security system...
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a Thwomp of your own? If anyone tried to break into your house, it would just go "THWOMP!" right on their head. Yep, a Thwomp would make a great home-security system. Unfortunately, they're not available in shops. Sad times.

Thwomp can be summoned using the cores of Rock Pikmin and Rocky.

Trivia
- Thwomp's Assist Trophy reveal is very similar to King K. Rool's fighter reveal. While King Dedede was disguised as K. Rool, only to get smacked by him later, Kirby follows suit by using Stone to take the form of Thwomp, only to get hit by a real one.
