A boss in EarthBound, Mother 3, SSBB
Universe EarthBound

Porky Minch (ポーキー・ミンチ, Pōkī Minchi), also known as Pokey Minch, The Pig King, or King P, is a character that originated in EarthBound. He is described as a self-centered, rotten, and spoiled brat, as well as a bully.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Porky's helicopter appears on the stage Fourside, as a homage to the time when he stole the helicopter in EarthBound.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

New Pork City is a stage in Brawl. Also, Porky's Theme is, as the name implies, his main song in Brawl.

As a boss

As the third boss of the Subspace Emissary and a general of the Subspace Army, Porky sends Primids to divert Lucas, eventually deploying his giant statue, The Pig King Statue, that soon starts to hunt Lucas down. This statue is indestructible, so Lucas has no choice but to escape; the giant statue destroys containers, barrels, enemies and even metallic buildings. Lucas finally comes to a giant marsh which seems to save him as the statue sinks, but it soon respawns.

Lucas then stumbles, and just as the giant statue is about to crush him, someone uses a PK Thunder which causes the statue to tip over, and Ness appears. The statue once again recovers and flies into the air, this time to crush Ness. However, he uses a PK Flash and the statue explodes, revealing Porky Minch himself (in his bed-mecha from Mother 3), who immediately challenges Lucas and Ness. He attacks by running around and by using a variety of lasers, but he is eventually taken down, making his machine blow up and fall into the background, twitching. His condition after the explosion is unknown.

Porky is brought back by Tabuu to distract the heroes in his maze of different worlds.

Porky's attacks

First move

  • Porky's walker does a flurry of stabs, inflicting heavy damage if all blows hit. It is possible to DI out of it by approaching towards him and jumping above. Small characters can duck under this attack.
  • Porky's walker walks around, which does minor damage. Difficult to see coming (the walker speeds up a little and its eyes glow), but easily avoided by staying away or jumping over the mech.
  • Porky's walker hops slightly before rapidly charging at the player and off-screen. This attack is very powerful, and has a lot of knockback, being a 1HKO on Intense. Jumping over the walker is advised over other methods of avoiding it.

Second move

  • Porky's walker sends out six Porky-Bots from Mother 3 that try to self-destruct at the player. If the player shoots them with a projectile, they trip and explode.
  • Porky's walker creates a ball of energy, which shoots a laser towards the player. In the air, it is a multi-hit attack and on the ground it is a powerful one-hit attack that does upwards of 50 damage. At higher levels, it is fast enough to circle around for a second (and even third) hit.

Third move

  • Porky's walker jumps up high and tries to land on the player.
  • Porky's walker hovers up, and tries to attack the player with a lightning bolt. At low HP, he does this two or three times (depending on whether or not he's on turbo). Standing on Porky will not dodge the attack, instead increasing the player's chances of a KO, being so close to the upper blast line. If Porky is at low health, doing enough damage to kill him will end the attack early (although his walker will land before entering dying animation).

Origin

Porky in his Heavily Armored Machine, as seen in Mother 3.

Porky Minch, referred to as Pokey Minch, first appeared in EarthBound and was Ness' neighbor. In the beginning of EarthBound, Porky temporarily joined Ness' team to find his brother Picky. However, whenever the team encounter an enemy, Porky cowardly doesn't fight. He later turns against Ness and becomes his enemy by joining the intergalactic destroyer Giygas. Towards the end of EarthBound, Porky is alongside Giygas in a "Heavily Armored" machine. A couple of his attacks involve charging at the player and tearing into the player (probably with the machine's legs). After unleashing Giygas' true form, he flees from the scene by time travel, leaving Ness and his companions to fight Giygas.

Porky later appears in Mother 3 as one of the main villains and leader of the Pigmask Army. He appears in a machine similar to the Heavily Armored Machine in EarthBound. The attacks he does, however, are not specified (For example, "What did Porky do?"). In Brawl, Porky appears as one of the bosses in the Subspace Emissary. One of his attacks is he charges across the stage, which could be a reference the attack in EarthBound, and he also attacks by rapidly stabbing the player, which could be a reference to the attack that involved tearing into the player. In EarthBound, Porky had to time travel ten years to the past in order to be alongside Giygas. Due to the side effects of the time travel, he turned a sickly blue. After Ness and Co. defeat Giygas, he travels to a new period in time. In Mother 3, it is revealed that Porky has done so much time traveling that he doesn't even know how old he actually is; he's said he could be 1,000 or even 10,000 years old. He also appears much older in Mother 3 as his hair is white and he has grown a mustache. His skin has also been turned to a more pale color. In Brawl, Porky is designed around his appearance in Mother 3, and the machine he is in is based on the machine in Mother 3.

In Mother 3, Porky ordered these robots to be built that appeared like he did before he started time traveling. The robots also had the same personality as him. When battling against these robots, they explode causing damage to Lucas and Co. There is also a robot that tried to kill them by self-destructing. There is also another version of these robots that are meant to be challenged against in certain games (such as racing across a platform). These robots have lights on top of them, and when they lose or win, the lights flash. In Brawl, Porky can send out a few of his robots. The robots appear like the ones with the lights on them, but they self-destruct like the other version.

As a trophy

A self-centered, rotten brat who lives next door to Ness. As the events of the game progress, he's rapidly led astray and becomes Giygas's right-hand man. Afterward, he goes missing in time and then reappears in the Nowhere Islands of Mother 3. He leads the Pig Mask Army invasion but is eventually defeated by Lucas and friends.

Trivia

  • Despite appearance, the player can actually step on the glass vial and avoid some attacks, while other times, it leaves the player perfectly open to damage, but at this position, the player is capable of attacking the whole time he/she stands up there. Snake can plant mines on Porky that will explode next time he attacks. However, most of the times the characters will slide off quickly. This can, however, cause the Earthquake Glitch to occur.
  • The edge of Porky's cage is sloped, despite appearance. This can be held as strategic value, and fast-falling attacks (Aether, Stone, Final Cutter) can land on Porky, then slide off, out of range of his legs.
  • Even after Porky is defeated, the player is still vulnerable to any previously deployed Porky-Bots. Failure to take note of this can lead to careless self-destructs.
  • If the player defeats Porky before he jumps, he will show the first part of his defeat animation, jump and land still inflicting damage, before exploding and flying into the background.
  • Porky is the only Boss who never comes in contact with a character outside of his own series (in contrast to Rayquaza)
  • In Mother 3, PK Flash is one of the two weaknesses of the King P statue, which makes it fitting that Ness uses it to destroy the statue in the cutscene.
  • The sound effect heard when Porky is defeated is similar to the sound effect used for the Ultimate Chimera's roar in Mother 3.
  • Despite being in his Mother 3 spider mech, he appears much younger than his Mother 3 incarnation (though he does have the mustache from that game), as if this Porky was a combination of his EarthBound and Mother 3 incarnation.
  • Porky is the only boss whose trophy is different then his official profile picture.
