Autolances (キャタガード, Cataguard) are some of the more powerful enemies in the Subspace Emissary and make their first debut in The Battlefield Fortress level. They move on treads and use giant lances attached to their frontal armor plates to ram and attack. Autolances do not flinch from any attack and are quite resistant to attacks with their helmets on, making them somewhat threatening, especially when coupled with other enemies. An Autolance's weak spot is inside its armored-helmet head in the form of an emergency light. This light is exposed once its armor receives enough damage.

Autolances have three different types of attacks - the first is a long-range move where it launches a giant lance at the player which can be reflected. The second is a close-ranged weak thrust, and a skyward swipe that follows up quickly. The first strike inflicts weak knockback, while the latter inflicts mainly vertical knockback. The third is a powerful forward lunge which is extremely fast and somewhat unpredictable, causing strong horizontal knockback.

Name origin[edit]

Autolance's name is a combination of the prefix auto- (possibly automotive), being a machine capable of moving by itself, and lance, the weapon it uses to attack. Its appearance seems to be based on the helmet of a medieval knight. The -lance part of its name could also come from ambulance, since under the helmet is a siren. Once its helmet is knocked off, an Autolance gains speed, the same way an ambulance speeds during an emergency.

Damage taken[edit]

The top number refers to the helmet of the Autolance. Autolances use the bottom number upon losing their helmet.

Autolance
An enemy that moves on caterpillar treads and uses the giant lance attached to its front to ram and sometimes shoot you. Looking for a weak spot? It's inside that armored-helmet head in the form of an emergency light. But... Autolances aren't Subspace Army emergency vehicles--why would they need an emergency light? Aah, the mystery!
