Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from Smash 4, Yoshi's model features a more subdued color scheme. His irises appear larger and his shoes feature simple detailing.
  • Change Yoshi now always faces the screen regardless of the direction he turns. Because of this, his stance is now mirrored, and so is his moveset.
  • Change Yoshi's dashing animation is changed. It is now a more upright run with his arms moving, similar to his dashing animation in Yoshi's Island DS.
  • Change Yoshi has a new idle animation, which is similar to his idle animation in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
  • Change Yoshi has a new alternate costume based on his appearance in Yoshi's Crafted World. It replaces his black costume from Smash 4.
  • Change Two of Yoshi's victory poses were slighly altered: the victory animation where Yoshi spins around and strikes a v sign now has him performing a Flutter Jump, before spinning around once and striking a v sign; and the victory animation where Yoshi punches the air once and striking a pose now has him punching the air twice and, strikes a pose with his right leg farther back.

Attributes

  • Buff Like all characters, Yoshi's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.

Ground attacks

  • Buff The last hit of neutral attack deals slightly more knockback.
  • Nerf Neutral attack no longer Jablocks.
  • Change Forward tilt has a new animation.

Aerial attacks

  • Buff All aerials have less landing lag.
  • Nerf Neutral aerial has more startup lag.
  • Change Forward aerial has a different animation. Yoshi no longer flips after the headbutt.
  • Change Back aerial has a slightly altered animation, with Yoshi striking a new pose at the end of the move.
  • Buff Back aerial's hits transition faster.
  • Change Yoshi has a new up aerial where he raises his tail up from behind and no longer flips.
  • Nerf Up air has more endlag.
  • Buff Down aerial has faster startup.
  • Buff Down aerial's landing hit deals more knockback, potentially causing opponents to tumble, which it could not do in previous games due to its fixed knockback.

Throws/other attacks

  • Change Yoshi's pummel animation has changed. Now after grabbing an opponent and holding them in his mouth, his cheeks become swollen and jiggle, as if the fighter inside is trying to break out. He also holds his mouth closed with his hands, and he no longer crouches down to the ground.

Special Moves

  • Change Egg Lay has a slightly altered animation, inflating Yoshi's cheeks more as he swallows opponents similar to his grab.
  • Buff Egg Lay retracts faster.
  • Nerf Egg Lay has slightly less range.
  • Change Yoshi strikes a new pose before using Egg Roll.
  • Change Yoshi no longer bounces at the start of Egg Roll.
  • Buff The eggs from Egg Throw now bounce once on the ground before they break.
  • Nerf Egg Throw covers less vertical distance reducing Yoshi's recovery ability.
  • Nerf The eggs from Egg Throw cover slightly less distance.
    • Change Yoshi can now use his right arm or left arm to throw eggs in his Egg Throw due to his mirrored stance.
  • Buff Egg Throw can now be thrown in all eight different directions.
  • Buff Yoshi Bomb appears to have armor on start-up when used on the ground.
  • Buff Yoshi Bomb can now sweetspot a ledge even if Yoshi is facing away from it.
  • Nerf Yoshi Bomb does less damage.
  • Change Yoshi Bomb can now descend through soft platforms. It is unknown whether this behavior is automatic or determined by the user's inputs.
  • Bug fix Yoshi vocalizes when using Yoshi Bomb as he did in every installment prior to Smash 4. This is likely a bugfix due to the voice clip still being present in Sound Test.
  • Change Yoshi has a new Final Smash. He headbutts in front of him and an army of multicolored Yoshis stampede over the trapped players, similar to his part of the Super Smash Bros. Melee opening.
