Simon (シモン, Simon) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was announced as a newcomer alongside Richter, Chrom, Dark Samus, and King K. Rool during a Nintendo Direct on August 8th, 2018.

Attributes

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.
  • Simon's design is based on his appearance from the older Castlevania games, most noticeably on the X68000 release of Castlevania Chronicles with some elements from Super Castlevania IV, such as his shoulder pad and the spiked bracelet he wears on his upper arm. His idle animation, walk, and jump are all inspired from the original Castlevania, though his backwards jump and roll are taken from Richter's backflip and backdash animations respectively.
  • Simon's main weapon is his fully upgraded "Vampire Killer" whip which he uses in the Castlevania games, giving him tremendous reach for many moves, but noticeable startup lag as a result. He has the longest average reach out of every fighter.
  • Some of Simon's attacks have unique sound effects taken from his original series. His whip uses the lashing and striking sounds from some of the old Castlevania games, while his uppercut attack uses the sound effect from Symphony of the Night.
  • Much like how Richter borrows moves originally from Simon, Simon borrows moves from Richter, such as the down tilt second part attack and the ability to control his whip making circular attacks.

Moveset

Ground attacks

  • Neutral attack - Two whip strikes with the whip coiled followed by a flurry of whip strikes and an upward finisher. Simon holds the whip lengthwise with both hands.
    • If the button is held, Simon will perform the whip twirl from Super Castlevania IV. It is freely controllable and is able to destroy weak projectiles, such as Metal Blade and Missile. Functions similarly to Sheik's old Chain.
  • Forward tilt - A whip swing with very long range but notable startup. Based on the iconic whip strike introduced in the first Castlevania.
  • Up tilt - A quick whip swing that covers his head.
  • Down tilt - A slide kick. If the button is pressed again, Simon does a jumping kick with the forward momentum, which is capable of jumping off platforms and edges. Based on Richter Belmont's Slide and Jumping Slide from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • Dash attack - Dashes while quickly spinning his whip. Capable of destroying weak projectiles. Based on Richter Belmont's Blade Dash from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Smash attacks
  • Forward smash - A long-ranged whip crack. Outranges Corrin's forward smash, making it the longest uncharged forward smash in the entire game.
  • Up smash - A vertical whip crack, boasting impressive vertical range but poor horizontal hitboxes.
  • Down smash - Spins his whip around his body, with great range on both sides.

Aerial attacks

  • Neutral aerial - A whip twirl around his body.
  • Forward aerial - A whip swing, which can be angled slightly upward and downward at roughly a 20 degree angle. It also acts as a tether recovery. Based on the directional whip mechanics from Super Castlevania IV.
  • Back aerial - Identical to forward aerial, except backwards.
  • Up aerial - An upward whip swing with impressive vertical range but poor horizontal hitboxes. It is currently unknown if it can be angled or if it's a tether recovery.
  • Down aerial - A divekick. It is a stall-then-fall and bounces off opponents, and it appears to meteor smash in its earlier frames. Simon and Richter both obtained this ability in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.

Grab attacks

Notably, while Simon can use his whip as a tether recovery, he does not use it to grab opponents.

Special moves

  • Neutral special - Axe: Simon throws an axe in an arc. The angle can be adjusted by moving the control stick. It also passes through the stage. The axe deals a large amount of shield damage, making it useful for pressuring opponents.
  • Side special - Cross: Simon throws a straight boomerang that pierces through opponents. Distance and power can be increased by inputting the move like a smash attack. Deals more damage on the way out than the way back.
  • Up special - Uppercut: Simon ascends into the air with his chain whip. Based on Richter's High Jump in Symphony of the Night.
  • Down special - Holy Water: Simon tosses a short-ranged projectile that creates a pillar of flames, similar to Arcfire. The bottle must hit the ground or opponent to activate, otherwise it just falls until it strikes something.
  • Final Smash - Grand Cross: After trapping an opponent in a coffin, Simon grabs it with his chain whip and tosses it into the air under the moonlight, using Grand Cross to finish them off. Based on the Item Crash performed when wielding the Cross sub-weapon.

On-screen appearance

  • Appears on screen surrounded by light.

Taunts

  • Holds the Vampire Killer in the air, coiled up.
  • Holds the Vampire Killer lengthwise and spins it around himself twice.
  • Cracks the Vampire Killer on the ground next to him.

Victory poses

  • Holds the coiled Vampire Killer in the air and unleashes it as he spins once.
  • Jumps up to grab a Magic Crystal then whips forward. Simon will then continuously whip and jump as the camera cuts to a side view.

Trivia

  • Simon's render is based off of the boxart of the original Castlevania, now turned to face the side and with the Vampire Killer in front of him.
    • It also slightly resembles Mario's render pose in Brawl, albeit mirrored horizontally.
  • Simon is the first character to be introduced in the same installment as his clone since Melee, where Marth was added to the roster along with his clone, Roy.
    • He is also the first third party character to ever have a clone.
  • The screenshot of Simon holding an axe in front of Bowser is a reference to Super Mario Bros., where the axe is often the key to defeating Bowser and his imposters in castle levels.
  • In the direct, the words: "Richter originated some of these moves. So, Simon also echoes Richter!" are seen on the bottom. Sakurai also mentions that because some of Simon's moves originate from Richter, it's "hard to say who's really echoing who".
  • Not counting Echo Fighters, Simon is the only newcomer to be human.
  • Simon is the only playable character introduced in Ultimate to have an Echo Fighter.
  • Simon continuously whipping in one of his victory poses is a reference to the gameplay style in Castlevania which is "jump and whip".
