With her Charge Shot, Missile and Bomb, Samus has three different projectiles to keep her opponents in check from a distance. When fully charged up, her Charge Shot is quite powerful. For her Final Smash, she launches a wide laser beam that can be moved up and down!

Samus (サムス・アラン, Samus Aran) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She retains her modified Metroid: Other M design from SSB4.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  •   As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Samus's model features a more subdued color scheme.
  •   Samus has a new airdodge animation.
  •   Samus has two new victory poses:
    •   Fires a Super Missile and strikes a pose. The final pose resembles her official artwork.
    •   Lands down and readies her Arm Cannon.
  •   Her eighth costume has been changed from dark-blue with light-blue highlights to black with yellow highlights.

Attributes

  •   Samus has faster horizontal aerial mobility. She also reaches the maximum height of her jumps more quickly.
  •   Samus' roll is significantly faster.
  •   Like all characters, Samus's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.

Ground attacks

  •   The first hit of neutral attack has set knockback and hitstun, meaning it will struggle to combo into other moves (including the second hit of neutral attack) and is much less safe even at higher percents.
  •   Dash attack now produces an effect similar to her Shinespark ability.
  •   Dash attack has increased knockback.
    •   However, this loses much of its previously potent combo potential.
  •   Forward smash has a slightly larger explosion sweetspot.
  •   Down smash deals more knockback.
  •   Down smash has an altered ending animation, with Samus keeping more momentum from her kick.

Aerial attacks

  •   Neutral aerial's whole animation is quicker.
  •   Up aerial has slightly better linking between hits.
  •   Down aerial has significantly reduced landing lag.
  •   Grab aerial no longer follows Samus's vertical movement, staying in place somewhat similar to its Melee incarnation.

Throws/other attacks

  •   All grabs have reduced startup and endlag.
  •   Pummel is slower.
  •   Back throw deals significantly more knockback.
  •   Samus has a new up throw animation. She now uses her Arm Cannon to blast her opponents upwards instead of using her Grapple Beam.

Special moves

  •   Charge Shot can now be charged mid-air. It can be cancelled by jumping or airdodging.
  •   When firing a Missile, Samus's visor and armor highlights change to light blue, in reference to the original Metroid.
  •   Super Missile travels faster and stalls before flying forward, similar to her Turbo Missile custom move from Super Smash Bros. 4.
  •   Missile and Super Missile have updated designs.
  •   Screw Attack has less lag before she starts falling.
  •   Bomb has an earlier contact hitbox.
  •   When Samus unleashes Zero Laser, the jets on the back of her suit now release flames as exhaust.

Trivia

  • Samus is the only female character on the game's starting roster, aside from Pikachu's female alternate costumes.
  • In her official artwork, Samus's pose matches this artwork of her alongside Anthony Higgs from Metroid: Other M. This same piece of artwork was used on the official website of Other M without Higgs.
    • Samus' arm position also bears resemblance to how they were in the first two Metroid games' cover art.
    • In the game's cover artwork and the "Everyone is Here" cast artwork, Samus' pose matches her pose on the cover of Super Metroid.
  • Despite no longer being linked by in-battle transformation, Zero Suit Samus temporarily dons the Varia Suit during her Final Smash.
