Supernova 2025 was a Super Smash Bros. tournament held in Chantilly, Virginia from August 7th-10th, 2025, and was the ninth edition in the Supernova series (known as Super Smash Con prior to 2024).
In celebration for the event's 10-year anniversary, the event partnered with Ludwig and his company Mogul Moves in hopes of breaking attendance records for Melee, Ultimate, and Rivals of Aether II. The entrants fee for Melee singles was notably free to help with the attendance records. Ultimately, both the Melee and Rivals of Aether II records were broken, with Melee receiving 2,422 registrations, which made it largest Melee tournament of all time prior to disqualifications.
Tournament summary[edit]
Super Smash Bros.[edit]
At 246 entrants for the singles event, this tournament continues Super Smash Con/Supernova's streak of running the largest Smash 64 tournaments each year.[1] However, 6th seed and Super Smash Con 2019 champion kysk notably dropped out due to having COVID-19.[2]
This tournament is known for Wario's remarkable run through the Losers bracket. After being upset by Dogs_Johnson in Winners Round 1, Wario went on a 7-set Losers run to reach Grand Finals, eliminating 5 of the top 11 players on the 2024 Smash 64 Power Rankings, including Josh Brody, Robert, Wizzrobe, KeroKeroppi, and SuPeRbOoMfAn in a last-hit last-stock game 5, in addition to 2023's #1 player Isai in their first tournament set.
Waiting in Grand Finals on the Winners side was Wario's bracket demon Kurabba, who, aside from his game-5 sets against JaimeHR and Wizzrobe, cruised through the tournament, as well as beating Isai 3-1 in the runback from Super Smash Con 2023. While Wario managed to take a game, Kurabba ultimately won 3-1 to claim his third Super Smash Con/Supernova victory, making him tied with SuPeRbOoMfAn for having the most Super Smash Con/Supernova wins in Smash 64 singles.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
While the Melee bracket was expected to have a significant number of DQ's due to many Ultimate and Rivals 2 players entering, there were still a few notable Melee players who dropped from the bracket. 81st seed Sinbad, 77th seed Hallowy, 51st seed Balloon Day, 36th seed Bbatts (who had expressed a desire to focus on Rivals of Aether 2)[3], and 31st seed Zealot all dropped from the Melee bracket. Conversely, some Ultimate and Rivals players decided to try dual-competing, the two most notable being Beastly and CakeAssault, who both advanced to phase 2 and finished a respectable 129th.
Day 1 proceeded with numerous upsets on top 64 seeds, one of the biggest being 100th seed Dova defeating 31st seed Maelstrom, who would then lose to 68th seed Boyd for 65th, while 63rd seed Adwan would also exit at 65th losing to Grab2Win. New York Yoshi player and 76th seed Daniel would eliminate 44th seed Grab at 65th as well.
Day 2 would yield far more substantial upsets as the bracket proceeded into top 64. Mirroring the previous year, top 64 was populated by a large number of mid tiers, as well as an extremely diverse pool of high tier characters. Four Pikachu players qualified for top 64, three of whom were on the winners side, the most of any Melee supermajor, alongside five Ice Climbers players and two Luigi players, RapMonster who entered from winners, and M1sf1re, who entered from losers after upsetting 38th seed DarkGenex. Daniel would enter on the losers' side after defeating Grab as the only Yoshi player, while both Junebug and Morsecode762 would enter on winners side.
Unlike the previous year, which featured almost entirely North American talent, a substantial number of international players would a number of upsets over day 2, with a considerable number qualifying for top 64. Inngenn from Japan would defeat Gahtzu before losing to Axe to place 33rd. Irfan would fall to Aura at 33rd as well after defeating Chango, while Jamie and Rikzz would exit at 49th. The last international competitor would be Nicki, who would be eliminated by Kevin Maples for 17th. Despite no international competitors making top 16, this tournament provided many of them with the additional major they needed to meet the attendance requirements for the end-of-year ranking.
RapMonster, seeded at 23rd, was able to repeat a championship Sunday appearance from his Get On My Level: Forever performance, falling to lloD in top 64, but he made a 3-set losers run, capping off Saturday by gaining another 3-1 upset (UF-3) over Krudo. However, on Sunday, he would be defeated 3-1 by Spark, one set off from matching his GOML:F placement, ending his run at 13th.
Top 64 also contained an immense number of Falco players, totalling at 10, only one less than Fox, who totalled to 11, surprising many viewers and competitors as Falco had been experiencing a decline over the post-pandemic era in top level representation. Magi, the best Falco in the world behind Mang0, would place a strong 13th. Just as the last event served as the breakout performance for for Kacey, this tournament was the breakout event for Pennsylvanian Falco Fudge. Entering top 64 on the losers side after a loss to lloD, Fudge would plow through Juicebox, OkayP., and Epoodle before falling to Junebug, ending his run at 17th.
The best Falco run, however, was beyond any doubt that of Ginger's. Following his return to competition at Get on my Level: Forever, Ginger would unexpectedly go on the run of his life. First, he entered top 64 from winners by defeating Grab in a nail-biting game 5 set, then would upset both Aura and Sirmeris 3-1 before losing to Moky 2-3 in a top 8 qualifier. Invigorated from this loss, Ginger would then defeat Jmook to qualify for top 8 on the losers side, becoming the first Falco player outside of Mang0 and Magi to place top 8 at a major or supermajor since Fiction at Luminosity Makes Moves Miami 2024 and The Big House 10 respectively. Afterward, he would then defeat both Axe and Aklo before falling to Hungrybox for 4th, Ginger's best placement at a major.
Similarly, Khryke would also go on a career-defining run. After losing to Aklo in his first set of top 64, Khryke would go on a 5-set losers-run, defeating Joey Donuts, Frostbyte, Sirmeris, Junebug (using the Ice Climbers), and finally SDJ in a nail-biting 3-2 set to qualify for his first major top 8, as well as becoming the first Marth player outside of Zain and KoDoRiN to place top 8 at a major since Rishi at Super Smash Con 2022.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
At 192 entrants, this event was only slightly larger than Supernova 2024, also making it the second largest Brawl tournament in the post-Smash 4 metagame, taking 2024's spot, and matching it's top 20 count, with 9 players on the 2024 SSBBRank attending the tournament. Despite this, it remained the smallest bracket at the tournament overall, but was nevertheless considered a major due to a large amount of top talent participating in the tournament. The tournament went smoothly, with little in the way of major upsets, and most players performing at or around their seed.
falln, seeded 21st, was able to make a remarkable run to top 8, sending MrRyanNess to the Loser's bracket, 2-0, before losing to DeLux in Winner's Quarters, and being eliminated by MrRyanNess in the runback for a 7th place finish.
Vex Kasrani, seeded 3rd, the best King Dedede player in the post-Smash 4 metagame, as well as going unranked on the 2024 SSBBRank, was also able to make a solid top 8 run on Winner's side. Player-1 would defeat him in Winners Semi-Finals, before Vex defeated MrRyanNess in losers, and Cody ended his run, placing 4th overall.
The aforementioned Player-1 would finally be able to claim his first Brawl major, after a long top 8 streak dating back to Super Smash Con 2017, only dropping a single game to DeLux in Grand Finals. This would also mark the first major won by a Diddy Kong player in the post-Smash 4 metagame, and the first victory since ADHD's victory at SKTAR 2, almost over 12 years later.
In 2v2, Mikeray4 and Cody won their second 2v2 Championship in a row as a team (Mikeray4's third straight 2v2 championship in a row), defeating Vex Kasrani and Kyoz 6-0 in Grand Finals after losing to them 3-0 in the Winner's Bracket.
This resulted in Mikeray4 and Cody now having four and three 2v2 SSC/Supernova championship titles, respectively.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit]
In spite of a Bayonetta ban, this event continued the trend of Smash 4 events shrinking in size with each iteration, with the singles event at Supernova 2025 being the smallest Smash 4 event in the series. With continued absence of the best post-Smash 4 players, this event was once again a superregional, and the third in the post-Ultimate metagame. Smash 4 veteran falln won the event, in his first notable tournament appearance since EVO 2019. The runner-up, SuperGirlKels, and the PGR 100's 100th best player, was double-eliminated by falln, both sets going 0-3. She only went to game 5 against Marcus, the victor of the previous Smash 4 event at Supernova.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Ultimate singles received 2,432 entrants, making it the fifth-largest tournament in the game's history. However, the singles event was the first Supernova Ultimate event since 2019 where it was not the largest tournament of the year, as Kagaribi 13 surpassed its total entrants count by over 100 entrants. In addition, with several top players either missing from the event (such as acola and Asimo) or dropping out (such as Sonix, MkLeo, and TamaPDaifuku), this iteration is considered one of the smallest Ultimate Supernova events in terms of top-level talent.
This event was Jahzz0's best performance, outperforming his seed by a notable margin. Though Jahzz0 was upset by #226 seed Fani 2-3 after leaving pools (upset factor 6), he tore through the Loser's bracket, winning 11 sets in a row and taking out KEN, Raflow, NaetorU, and SHADIC before losing to Onin on Loser's side top 8 in a game 5 scenario for 7th. This performance marks one of the greatest Ken performances in Ultimate. In addition, Peabnut also saw the best performance of his career, sending both Sparg0 and Onin to the Loser's bracket en route to a top 8 appearance on the Winner's side; the former upset was tied for the second largest upset at the tournament, sitting at upset factor 6. Peabnut eventually lost to Miya in a tense game 5 set before losing the runback against Sparg0 3-1 for 5th. Nevertheless, this marks the greatest performance from a Mega Man player at a post-pandemic supermajor.
On the other hand, due to the smaller top-level presence compared to previous Supernova events, there were only a few notable upsets. The two other notable ones being #8 seed Shuton, who was double-eliminated by two Steve players — #9 seed Syrup 1-3 and #46 seed Toon 2-3 (upset factor 5) to place 17th, and #20 seed MuteAce, who was double-eliminated by two Kazuya players — #109 seed Wheezer 1-3 (upset factor 5) and #164 seed Petayaa 2-3 (upset factor 6) to place 49th. Shuton's placement notably marked the third Supernova event in a row where he placed 17th. In addition, after upsetting MuteAce, Petayaa eliminated #28 seed Kurama 2-3 at 33rd (upset factor 5). Meanwhile on the Winner's side, #44 seed BassMage defeated #12 seed Tea 3-0 (upset factor 4) and #45 seed Chag defeated #13 seed Wrath 2-3 (upset factor 3). Outside of those upsets, this event marked a slight return-to-form performance from SHADIC. After losing to Raru, SHADIC made a decent losers run, which included eliminating #16 seed Ouch!? 3-1 (upset factor 3) to place 13th as the 39th seed.
In top 8, Doramigi was upset by Hurt's secondary Sonic 2-3, sending the #1 seed into Losers bracket early. Though Hurt was able to put up a good fight in Winners Finals, Miya was able to defeat him in a reverse 3-0 to make Grand Finals. In Losers, Doramigi was able to eliminate Sparg0, the final non-Japanese player in the tournament, at 4th, before winning the runback against Hurt's Sonic 3-1 to make Grand Finals. Miya then defeated Doramigi 3-0, with Doramigi having to switch to Corrin in the final game, to win the entire event, marking his first international supermajor victory.
Controversy arose when Onin unexpectedly forfeited from their match against Doramigi, after it was reported that they could not be found at the venue.[4] Onin briefly deactivated their Twitter as well, and upon reactivating revealed that they were going on hiatus, citing discontent regarding how the Smash community was treating them.[5] Though it was not the primary reason for Onin's forfeit and hiatus, their disqualification and statement led to discussion regarding booing in competitive Smash.

*Due to the number of entrants for the singles event, Melee doubles was moved to Thursday, leading to approximately 74 confirmed full disqualifications (the number of disqualifications in bracket A306 is unknown as the bracket only reported wins and losses). As such, there were approximately 141 teams that actually played in the bracket.
