LVL UP EXPO 2025 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 25th-27th, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
The event is the first supermajor in the Las Vegas area since Double Down 2022. Some players considered this event to be the start of Japan's Golden Week, as it takes place the weekend when it started and features many of Japan's best players, mainly acola, Miya, Shuton, Raru, Doramigi, Snow, and Zackray. With many of North America's best players also in attendance, this event eventually reached P tier, becoming the second P tier event of the LumiRank 2025 season.
In spite of the Japanese presence, many of these players underperformed, most of them by a lot. The biggest underperformance was the first seed, acola, who was double-eliminated by two Mario players — #32 seed Kurama 1-3 (upset factor 9) and #81 seed Skinny the Pooh 2-3 (upset factor 12) — to place 33rd. Not only did this end acola's streak of top 8 finishes at ranked events, becoming the first time he placed outside the top 8 since Seibugeki 12 in December 2022, but it was also acola's first-ever double-digit performance offline, and as such marks by far his worst performance in Ultimate. Finally, this is also the worst performance for a first seed since Hurt's 49th place at Seibugeki 17 in July 2024. Alongside acola, #4 seed Miya fell early as well, losing to #36 seed omega 1-3 (upset factor 7) before facing an unfavorable opponent in #28 seed Marss, who swiftly defeated Miya's Mr. Game & Watch and Steve 0-3[1] (upset factor 6), his worst result since his 49th place at Kagaribi 9 more than 2 years ago. Finally, joining the two players at 33rd was #11 seed Zackray, who lost to #54 seed Ludo 1-3 (upset factor 5) before losing to #14 seed Ouch!? 2-3, his worst placement since DELTA 5 in September 2023. Outside of these upsets, #15 seed Snow lost 1-3 to #50 seed elijmin (upset factor 4) before being eliminated by #18 seed Kola for 49th, his worst result since Kagaribi 11 back in October 2023, and #3 seed Shuton lost his runback against #30 seed Jahzz0 1-3 (upset factor 7) but was still able to enter top 24 on the Losers side.
The upsets and early losses were not limited to Japanese players, however. Notably, #10 seed Tweek was knocked into Losers by #42 seed Capitancito 2-3 (upset factor 4) and then played Donkey Kong against Kola, losing 1-3, placing 33rd, and tying both Smash 'N' Splash 5 and GENESIS 8 as his worst offline performance. In addition, #22 seed Dabuz lost to #43 seed Kiyarash 1-3 and was eliminated by Zackray 0-3 for 49th, tying Luminosity Makes BIG Moves 2024 as his worst offline performance; conversely, Kiyarash entered top 24 on the Winners by defeating #6 seed Glutonny 0-3 (UF 6), then guaranteeing himself a spot in top 8 with a 3-2 over ShinyMark. In top 24, the last japanese top 8 seed to not make top 8, Shuton, was eliminated at 17th, losing his runback to Sonix 2-3 (UF 4). Finally, #17 seed MkLeo defeated Glutonny in a close game 5 set (UF 3), eliminating him at 17th, but failed to win his runback against #16 seed Onin, losing 1-3 and finishing at 7th.
Despite two other Steve players projected to join them, Onin became the only Steve player to advance to top 24 on the Winners side after acola was eliminated and #5 seed Syrup lost to #12 seed Raru in a reverse 3-0 and to #19 seed ShinyMark 2-3 for 9th. Onin was eventually knocked into Losers by Zomba, but then preceded to make an incredible Losers run by defeating #20 seed Wrath outside of top 8, and in top 8 MkLeo 3-1, Kiyarash 3-0, #13 seed Light 3-0, and Zomba in the runback 3-1 in order to meet Doramigi in Grand Finals. However, Onin's Losers run was shut down by #7 seed Doramigi, who made top 8 rather effortessly, including 3-0'ing #2 seed Sparg0 (UF 4) before clutching out two game 5 sets against Kiyarash and Zomba. However, as the sole Japanese player in this top 8, Doramigi dominantly defeated Onin 3-1, which included a three-stock in the final game where Doramigi took an early second stock by reflecting Onin's Anvil, dealing around 60% and taking Onin's stock at 80%. As such, Doramigi claimed his third major victory, as well as his first supermajor victory. With his overall consistency up to that point (as his most recent placement outside of top 8 was at Cirque 4, back in October 2024), all other candidates (Sparg0, Light, Raru, acola or Miya fo example) having noticeable underperformances, and Hurt serving out his ban, Doramigi's victory at this event made him a strong contender for the #1 position for the LumiRank 2025 half-year season. Although this American P-Tier was won by a Japanese player, this event seems to prove, just like Battle of BC 7 a month before, that North America was catching up to the Japanese scene, as seen by the severe underperformances of some of Japan's best players like acola, Miya, Zackray or Snow, and therefore that Kagaribi 13 the week after would not be the "destruction of North America"[2] that happened last year.
