Zamu is a smasher from Champaign, Illinois.
Zamu first began playing competitively in early 2015, attending the weeklies in Champaign. Near the end of 2016, he entered his first major at The Big House 6, notably losing in Round 1 Pools against Ginger, followed by a solid 33rd finish at Eden, losing to Druggedfox in Winners side of Top 64.
2017 marked significant progression, gradually placing higher, teaming with various players in the scene (notably Thor and Captain Faceroll) and travelling to more regional events. He made his first appearance on the Champaign Power Rankings in the Spring 2017 iteration, at 9th. Zamu traveled to Smash 'N' Splash 3, losing in pools to Cal. A string of more solid placements eventually led to his first tournament win in September of 2017, and being ranked 6th in the Fall 2017 Power Rankings. He fell to Crush (3-0) and JustJoe at Super Rubicon 2 - finishing at 7th. He took a set over Reeve (3-2), earning a 5th place finish at Kill Roy: Vol. 3. At House of Paign 15, after being sent to losers side of Top 48 by Prince Abu (3-1), he 3-0'd JustJoe and bested Michael (3-1), but was eliminated by SK92 (3-0) to finish 7th. He rounded out the year with a 2nd place finish at The Winter Theater, beating AbsentPage in a game-5 Losers Finals set (only losing to eventual winner, Captain Faceroll).
Zamu kicked off 2018 with a 7th place finish at Cincinnati Smash Classic VII, losing to Drephen and Fizzle_Boy. He then attended the Chicago Melee Arcadian, winning the event with nearly all 3-0 sweeps through Winners side of Top 32 (only dropping 1 game). This was followed by House of Paign 16, where Zamu lost to Cob and Reeve enroute to a lack luster 17th place finish. Next, at Chicago Gaming Coalition No.1, Zamu lost to Bananas in Winners Semis of pools, and was upset in the Top 32 Losers qualifier by dudutsai, finishing 33rd. At Stiff Knees, Zamu was sent to Losers by Vista (3-1), and then eliminated by Travioli (3-2) to get 5th place, just ahead of Full Bloom 4. At his first Major of the year, he lost in pools to Free Palestine (formerly Milhous), and then was eliminated in pools by homemadewaffles, getting 65th. He quickly turned things around, and at House of Paign 17, he beat Kels (3-1), and ended with a solid 4th place finish, only losing to AbsentPage and Michael. This was followed by a 1st place finish at a regional in Missouri - Wunderland 7 - taking out Travioli (who sent him to Losers), Shinobi and Iori. The week after that, Zamu competed at Aegis, and enroute to a 9th place finish, took out Rik while losing to Plup and Moky. At the last of House of Paign iteration until the fall (HoP 18), Zamu coasted into Winners side of Top 48, beating Drephen and Syrox, but was sent to Losers by eventual runner-up, KJH, and eliminated by Ginger. A pair of back-to-back regionals made for a good showing ahead of the summer of smash, as Zamu double-eliminated Rik at Rest in Peach (getting 2nd to AbsentPage), and double eliminated Rik at Master Hand Monthly in Indiana the following weekend to take 1st place.
At Smash 'N' Splash 4, Zamu met Ginger in Top 64 Winner's Qualifier - beating him 2-0. He then faced S2J in first round of Top 64, losing 3-0, and was eliminated by Travioli in a game 5 set, taking 33rd. His strongest run of the year came at Smashville 7, where he ran through Redd, Drephen, and Michael, before losing both sets of Grand Finals to n0ne, but managed to take the first set to game 5. At Super Smash Con 2018, he was upset in Winners Semi's of pools by Cascade (2-1), and then lost in Round 2 pools to DrLobster (2-1), ending his run at 97th. Capping off the summer of smash was Shine 2018, where Zamu again lost in Round 1 pools to Riko, but pulled together a solid Losers run, beating players such as TheRealThing and G$, before falling to Darktooth, earning 33rd.
