Asimo (あしも) or Ashimo is a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Ryu player from Shikoku who is currently residing in Okayama, Chūgoku. He is considered the greatest Ryu player of all time. He was first known for his Sumabato performances in late-2021 and early-2022, defeating several Japanese talent along the way. He first received international recognition for placing 2nd at Kagaribi 7, which marked by far the best Ryu performance up to that point, and was further recognized for his international debut at The Gimvitational, where he placed 5th. Since then, he has regularly accomplished achievements and consistent performances that no other Ryu players have ever achieved, including becoming the only Ryu player to rank in the top 10 on a global ranking, doing so by ranking 9th on the LumiRank 2024.2, and being the only Ryu player to win a major/supermajor, winning Sumabato SP 51 and KOWLOON 15 with Sumabato 15th anniversary.
Online, Asimo was ranked 18th on the 23rd Smashmate SP ranking and had a highest rating of 2,315.
Playstyle[edit]
Asimo is an extremely methodical player recognized for his devastating combo game and mastery of Ryu's tools. Asimo persistently mixes up his Hadoken and Shakunetsu Hadoken while in neutral, pressuring opponent shield and tacking on damage with callouts. He starts games with easy combo starters, of which he can often take 50% - 60% on one opening. Asimo also is highly knowledgeable about how to special cancel his moves, using Tatsumaki Senpukyaku and Focus Attack as a defensive move while using his Hadoken to take damage. He purposefully also keeps Shoryuken |unstaled to use as his main kill option, and is renowned for his ability to take stocks after a few good openings.
What sets Asimo the most apart is his aerial game. Asimo is great at using his up air, neutral air, and down air to start combos and kill confirms, but his most dangerous tool is Ryu's terrifying back air. Nicknamed the "back-air bandit," Asimo has mastered the instant RAR technique and can fire his back air off in neutral, for corner pressure, or even as kill confirm off of tapped forward tilt. All around, his abilities and matchup experience make Asimo a terrifying opponent to face in bracket.
