KOWLOON 9 with Sumabato was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Izumisano, Osaka, Kansai, from January 13th-14th, 2024, as part of both the KOWLOON and Sumabato series.
Tournament summary[edit]
Initially, this tournament was ranked as an S-tier on the LumiRank 2024.1 ranking. However, following the massive upsets that took place in future Japanese supermajors such as Kagaribi 12 and DELTA 8 by several players participating in this event, this event was later upgraded into a Premier tier, making this event the second P-tier of the LumiRank 2024.1 season. In addition, at 895 entrants this marks the largest singles event held in Kansai, shattering the previous record-holder, Maesuma TOP 8, by 305 entrants.
This event is mostly known for Raru's run. As the 30th seed, Raru first upset #3 seed Yoshidora 3-1 (upset factor 7) in winners top 64. He would enter winner side top 8 after defeating #14 seed Snow 3-2 and #43 seed Omuatsu 3-1. He continued his upset-heavy run by defeating in winner's semi-finals #15 seed Doramigi 3-0. Dropping in the loser's by Miya 0-3, he lastly made another upset, winning loser's finals against #9 seed Asimo 3-1 (UF 3). In Grand Finals, he would put a greater fight against the first seed, but lost the rematch in a close game 5 set. His second place at a Supermajor was Luigi's best result before Raru's win at Sumabato SP 47 5 months later. Miya became the third supermajor winner after Acola and Tweek, and retrospectively the second P-Tier winner after the former.
Unlike Umebura SP 10 just a week before, no international players made top 8. Like the previous tournament, Zomba and Glutonny were the two international players seeded to make top 8. #4 seed Zomba reached winner's quarters but lost back to back sets to #5 seed Yaura 1-3 and #6 seed Hurt 1-3 to place 9th. #2 seed Glutonny was upset by #15 seed Doramigi after a close game 5 set (UF 5) and by #78 seed Carmelo 1-3 for a upset factor 11, the biggest of the tournament. Glutonny was eliminated at 17th, his worst result since Port Priority 8 in November 2023. Outside of Glutonny and Zomba, very few of the international players actually matched their seeds. For example, #11 seed ApolloKage lost in his second set to #246 seed Renami 2-3 (UF 9) and after a 7 sets loser's run, was eliminated at 25th by #45 seed Akakikusu's Hero 2-3 (UF 4) while #12 seed Ouch!? finished 49th after losing two game 5 sets to #53 seed Atelier (UF 5) and #21 seed Ron (which was his worst performance before GENESIS X). Similarly, #19 seed Cosmos lost to #46 seed Taikei 2-3 before being eliminated at 65th place by #62 seed Rarikkusu 0-3 (UF 3). The only international players to outplaced their seeds at this tournament was the two French Steve players #121 seed Artsnif and #96 seed Susu, respectively placing 49th after upsetting #88 seed Tsumusuto 3-1 and placing 33rd after upsetting #33 seed Alice 3-2 and #32 seed Rizeasu 3-1 (UF 3).
However, this event was also filled with upsets over some of Japan's best players since only 3 of the top 8 seeds (#1 Miya, #5 Yaura, #6 Hurt) made top 8. Outside of Glutonny and Zomba as well as #8 Tea who DQ'd, #7 seed Jogibu lost the Captain Falcon ditto to #39 seed Karaage 0-3 (UF 5) before losing to #40 Noi 0-3 (UF 5) for 25th and #3 seed Yoshidora was upset by Rarukun and #27 seed Toriguri 1-3 (UF 7) to finish 33rd, his worst result since Kagaribi 6 more than 2 years ago.
Outside of Raru, the other players to replace the aforementioned players in top 8 are #9 seed Asimo, #15 seed Doramigi, #25 seed Gackt and #43 seed Omuatsu. Omuatsu's run was notable as he upset Hurt (UF 6) and Gackt's run was also notable as he upset Asimo (UF 3), although both Asimo and Hurt made great loser's run to outplaced their seed, as Hurt placed 4th and Asimo 3rd.
