Tomodachi Life (トモダチコレクション, Tomodachi Collection) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, based on the game of the same name. It was confirmed on March 14th, 2014.

Stage overview[edit]

The layout of the stage features a solid bottom platform and three equally long soft platforms stacked above it. The blast lines are quite close by. In a similar mechanic to Luigi's Mansion, the stage's front walls are opaque unless a player is standing behind them. This mechanic is not present when stage hazards are disabled. Additionally, Miis appear in the stage's background. The interior of each of the six rooms is random. The Ferris wheel of the amusement park can be seen in the background. All of these details are aesthetic; there are no stage hazards that interfere with the fighters.

Ω forms and Battlefield form[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, the Ω form is set on the roof of the apartment building and its interior cannot be accessed. The platform extends below the blast line. Interestingly, the Ferris Wheel in the background spins on the Ω form of the stage, but not on the regular stage.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the main platform of the Ω form and Battlefield form loosely resembles the apartment building and it is resized and reshape to match Final Destination and Battlefield, respectively. The landscape in the background is absent and only water is in the background. The three soft platforms of the Battlefield form resemble the top one of the normal form.

Origin[edit]

Mii Apartments in Tomodachi Life.

The stage is based off of the Tomodachi series, specifically Tomodachi Life, the first installment in the series to receive an international release. It takes place inside various rooms of the Mii Apartments, a building on the player's island where Miis reside. Unlike other Mii games, where the player controls the Miis, the Tomodachi series has the player as an onlooker as Miis go about their mundane daily lives, helping them make friends, get married, feed and dress themselves, and partake in hobbies. At daytime, Miis will usually stay confined to their room in the apartment, but will often either leave their room to visit another Mii, leave to visit another area of the island such as the observation tower or theme park, or go to sleep and have surreal dreams involving other Miis they've met. When browsing the apartment, the top screen shows the highlighted Mii's current activities, while the bottom screen shows windows to select, with Miis often having problems that the player has to help solve, such as wanting to make a friend, being hungry, or wanting to play a game. As more Miis join the apartment, the building will be expanded to support more residents, with new materials. The design of the apartment on the Tomodachi Life stage is based on its first appearance in Tomodachi Life before any expansions are made. The Amusement Park can be seen in the background of the stage. In Tomodachi Life, it is unlocked when a Mii confesses to another Mii.

In Tomodachi Life, the Miis would only be those the player added to the game. In Smash, the CPU Miis in the background can be any from the player's system.

Tournament legality[edit]

The stage is generally banned in competitive play due to the large number of soft platforms and the roof being rather close to the blast zone. This results in characters with powerful anti-air options and characters with effective ladder combos having an unfair advantage against generally grounded fighters.

Mii Apartments: This apartment complex is located in the middle of the island—so convenient! But wait. Why even leave when there's so much fun stuff to do inside? More importantly, what's up with the girl in 301 and the guy in 105? I'm sure someone around here wants to gossip...; With this apartment complex being based in the middle of the island, it's easy to get anywhere quickly. But why leave when there is so much fun stuff to do inside? And just what is going on between the girl in 301 and the guy in 105?! Maybe we'll find out the next time someone throws a roof party.

There are twelve interiors out of which six are chosen to appear in any one game. They all are real interiors in Tomodachi Life, but have had the items moved around to leave a side open for viewing and colors dulled to match the style of the game.

Miis[edit]

One Mii appears on every floor (room in Ultimate) of this stage, so there are three (six in Ultimate) Miis total. One of them will always be the user's system Mii, though the other Miis appear to be randomly chosen from the player's Mii Maker.

Trivia[edit]

Oddly, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Warp Stars never spawn on this stage.
In Ultimate, this is one of the few returning stages to not feature either of its original remixes as a main or alternate track.
In Ultimate, the following Assist Trophies can only appear on the Battlefield and Omega forms of this stage: Chain Chomp, Metroid, Mother Brain, Nightmare, Andross, Tiki, Kapp'n, Devil, Dr. Wright, Arcade Bunny, and Rathalos. The Squid Sisters cannot be summoned on this stage at all. Additionally, the following Poké Ball Pokémon can only be summoned on the stage's Battlefield and Omega forms: Moltres, Suicune, Lugia, Kyogre, Deoxys, Abomasnow, Palkia, Giratina, Zoroark, Kyurem, Xerneas, Solgaleo and Lunala. Alolan Exeggutor cannot be summoned at all.
