Steve (スティーブ, Steve) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and is the second third-party representative from Microsoft after Banjo & Kazooie. They were confirmed as a playable character on October 1st, 2020 as the second downloadable character from Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Alex, a Zombie, and an Enderman will also appear as alternate costumes. Steve is classified as fighter #77.

Known Information

  • Similar to Mr. Game & Watch, Steve appears to be lifted directly from their home game, and their model and movement appears nearly identical to that of Minecraft.
  • Steve's weapon stays in their hand momentarily depending on the move they use.
  • Other alternate costumes are taken from the default selection of skins offered to players on the "Legacy Console" and "Bedrock" Editions of Minecraft, namely "Tennis" Steve and Alex, "Scottish" Steve and "Swedish" Alex.

Moveset

  • Steve appears to have a crafting mechanic, where they can mine the ground to obtain materials and upgrade their weapons by planting a Crafting Table.
    • Available weapons and equipment include Swords, Fishing Rods, Axes, Pickaxes, Lava Buckets (seemingly as a down smash), and Flint & Steel. Weapons can be made of Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond.
  • Steve can place Blocks, which appear to crack and break automatically after placing them. Currently, the only known blocks they can place are Dirt, Oak Planks, Stone, Iron Blocks, and TNT. Crafting Tables can be spawned behind the playing field, appearing to linger after use, and Anvils can be dropped beneath them when in the air.
    • Additionally, Steve can place Redstone and a Wooden Pressure Plate to detonate TNT. This appears to trigger Special Zoom.
    • Steve also appears to have the ability to produce Minecarts and Rails. The former appears to be able to catch opponents as it moves, similar to Kapp'n.
    • Flint and Steel creates a short-lasting flame that spawns in front of them, but also appears to be affected by gravity and can be dropped from an elevation (seen in promotional screenshots on the Smash Bros. website).
  • Steve has been shown using several tools from Minecraft in combat, and can seemingly use multiple weapons for the same attack. As of now, which directional input each showcased attack belongs to is speculative, but the following examples are clearly shown off in the presentation:
    • They are shown using Swords and various other weapons for tilt attacks, including their forward smash.
    • Their forward aerial is a downwards swing with a weapon.
    • Their back aerial is a downwards swing with a weapon behind them (seen in promotional screenshots on the Smash Bros. website).
    • Their up aerial is a quick swing above their head with a weapon.
    • Their down smash causes them to place Lava out of a Lava Bucket in front of them, then behind.
    • Their up special appears to be an Elytra, which they use to glide.
    • When Alex is showcased, they are first shown performing the generic empty-handed melee animation while standing and jumping.
  • Their Final Smash begins by placing a giant piston in front of them, which extends to catch enemies in the attack. A cinematic plays where the affected fighter is launched into a dark building filled with TNT, where they are attacked by Creepers and Zombies, producing multiple explosions while Steve appears on the side of the screen, eating a steak.

Aesthetics

  • One of Steve's victory poses has them build a house similar to ones found in Villages, stand outside of it, then close the door.
  • The Minecraft characters are shown bobbing their heads repeatedly in front of the Squid Sisters, which may be an idle animation or taunt.

Trivia

You can discuss this issue on the talk page or edit this page to improve it.
  • Steve was created by the Swedish video game company Mojang Studios. This makes them the second DLC fighter that was created outside of Japan, as well as the second third-party character created outside Japan.
    • The first were Banjo & Kazooie, created by the UK-based developer Rare, which are coincidentally also owned by Microsoft.
  • After Mr. Game & Watch, Steve is the second playable character to look almost identical to their original appearance, the first third-party character to do so, and the first to come from a conventional video game rather than an LCD game.
    • In Minecraft, since the Beta 1.9 Prerelease the bottom textures of all skins were flipped vertically, and though the bottoms of skins such as Steve's and the Zombie's heads had details that were affected by this, they were never adjusted to appear how they were originally intended. In Smash, the bottoms of Steve's and Zombie's heads are oriented the way they were originally, with the texture not being flipped, while Alex, whose skin was designed for the bottom to be flipped, also has their skin as originally intended. However, the bottoms of Steve's hands were not flipped, and the bottoms of their legs and body also presumably weren't (though as these are solid colors, this is not immediately noticeable).
    • The Zombie alternate costume uses the original texture, though there was a texture update in 1.14 of Minecraft. This is possibly so that it better matches with the Steve texture.
    • The Enderman alternate costume also was slightly altered to match the dimensions of Steve, as the character is much taller in the original game.
    • Steve's design in Ultimate has a beard, which was used in early, "Classic" builds of Minecraft but removed from their texture in the 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST, although their beard still appears in some promotional artwork and merchandise afterwards.
  • Steve's reveal trailer contains multiple references to Minecraft:
    • Alex is shown attacking a Cucco with a diamond sword, referencing the need to hunt passive mobs such as chickens or cows to obtain food in Minecraft.
    • The Enderman picking up the crate references their affinity for picking up blocks and carrying them around.
      • The Enderman also hides from the rain on Distant Planet, referencing how Endermen receive damage from water in Minecraft.
    • Wolf throwing the Zombie causes it to drop meat, a reference to Rotten Flesh, which is their most common drop in Minecraft.
      • Additionally, the character being Wolf references Minecraft's own Wolf mob, which can be tamed and can help the player in combat.
    • Zombie is revealed breaking down a wooden door, which is an ability that Zombies have in Minecraft when playing on the hardest difficulty.
      • Additionally, the tiny Zombie that fights alongside two other Zombies after the reveal is a reference to the Baby Zombies that can also spawn.
    • The title of the reveal trailer "A New Seed!" references the seeds; the player is able to add names or numbers in the options when creating a New World in results to have different world generations.
  • Steve is the third fighter to have one of their victory animations shown in their reveal trailer, the first two being Joker and Terry.
  • Zombie and Enderman are the second and third playable fighters in the series to be generic enemies, the first being Piranha Plant.
  • Steve and Byleth are the only characters in Ultimate whose alternate costumes are displayed alongside their default costumes on the official Ultimate site, similarly to Robin's page on the official SSB4 site.
  • Steve is the only character who has two names (in Steve's case, they are listed as "Steve / Alex") displayed on the list of fighters on the official Ultimate website in all languages. Byleth was the first character to display two names in general, though this was only the case in languages where male and female Byleth had different names.
    • Coincidentally, both of them are also the only fighters who have multiple taglines, with Byleth having two and Steve having four.
  • Steve is the first character with other characters as alternate costumes where each character does not have the same amount of costumes. Each character with multiple genders has four costumes for each gender, Bowser Jr. and each Koopaling have one costume, Olimar and Alph each have four costumes, and each Hero has two costumes. In this case, Steve and Alex have three costumes while Zombie and Enderman have only one (their default appearance).
