The Ancient Minister is the primary antagonist for the majority of the Subspace Emissary. He appears to be the leader of the Subspace Army, and controls the R.O.B. Squad and their deployments of Subspace Bombs. He is similar in appearance to the race of Ancients in the Paper Mario series, such as Merlon. He is a limbless, robotic entity who floats as if utilizing anti-gravity. He is also considered to be a Tragic Villain (an antagonist, who does not truly intend to be a villain. They are perhaps misled or not entirely in control of their feelings and/or actions, or pursuing morally ambiguous logic), as he truthfully regretted his actions of bringing the World of Trophies into Subspace under the orders of Tabuu.

Role in the Subspace Army

The Ancient Minister makes his debut in the beginning of the story, after the friendly match between Kirby and Mario! There, he flies into the Stadium (Which Mario and Kirby fought in) from the Halberd and summoned a group of Primids to attack. Shortly afterward, The Ancient Minister drops a subspace bomb, prompting two R.O.B.s to activate it and send the stadium into subspace (Thankfully, Kirby as well as one of the princesses he rescued escape from the stadium via Warp Star; Mario, on the other hand, is knocked out of the stadium into the skies by a cannon). Every time R.O.B.s were ordered to activate a Subspace Bomb, the Ancient Minister would leave in despair as he watched his comrades fall into the abyss of Subspace (it takes two R.O.B.s to activate a bomb). He would often show signs (using his eyes) to show that he didn't want to do what he was commanded to do. At one point, when Samus, Pikachu, Captain Falcon, Olimar, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong managed to infiltrate the base where dozens of inactive R.O.B.s and Subspace Bombs were being held, along with a saddened Ancient Minister, a hologram of Ganondorf appeared and ordered the R.O.B.s to activate the bombs. As the Subspace Bombs would destroy everyone, the Ancient Minister protests, and knocks away the R.O.B.s that are about to set the bombs. Seeing this, Ganondorf activated an override (which forced the R.O.B.s to attack the Ancient Minister) and his hologram disappears. The Ancient Minister's armor is burned off, revealing that The Ancient Minister was actually a R.O.B. in disguise, having been manipulated by Ganondorf. No longer wishing to align with Ganondorf (and to a higher extent, Master Hand and Tabuu), the R.O.B. unit (The Ancient Minister) reforms from his evil ways and decides to help the heroes.

The Ancient Minister's trophy states he was once the ruler of 'this world' who lived on The Floating Island of the Ancients with the R.O.B.s. Tabuu wanted the R.O.B.s to work constructing Subspace bombs, and convinced the Minister to order them to do this and lead the Subspace Army. Also according to the game and confirmed by the "Smash Bros Dojo!!", he is the "Master Robot" of the R.O.B.s.

As a trophy

The Ancient Minister trophy is obtained as a reward for completing the "Clear The Subspace Emissary" Challenge.

Trophy Description

The commander of the Subspace Army who uses Subspace Bombs to tear up this world. He was once the lord of this world, living on the floating Island of the Ancients with many robots-but the robots were taken hostage on Tabuu's orders. Now that their home's a bomb factory, the robots carry out their functions while enduring deep sadness caused by the loss of their colleagues.

Trivia

  • The Ancient Minister appears as a selectable picture in Wi-Fi mode for the player's logo.
  • Although set on fire, the Ancient Minister seems unharmed after the R.O.B.s turn against him. This hints that his armor may have taken all the damage.
