Article on Super Mario Wiki Star

The Starman, known as the Super Star in PAL and Japanese regions (スーパースター, Sūpā Sutā) is an item in all three games of the Super Smash Bros. series. As well as spawning normally, it can also be found in Capsules and Party Balls. It automatically bounces on the field and can fall off the stage if not grabbed in time. A character who touches the Starman is granted invincibility for 10 seconds, though characters with a Starman can still be pushed off the stage by moves with the push effect and be hit with the Team Healer. CPUs tend to try to evade characters under the effects of a Starman and will not even attack in Melee. In the same way that the Hammer comes with its own music, whenever a character is under the effect of a Starman, special music will play in the background and the stage music will be lowered in volume to the point that it becomes extremely difficult to hear over the layered theme. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the music sounds just like it did when the player got a Starman in Super Mario Bros.. Unlike most items, the Starman will bounce around in large arcs and off platforms or walls, similar to its behaviour in the Mario games.

Origin

The Starman made its first appearance in Super Mario Bros. and has been a recurring item ever since. When a player touches a Starman, the player is temporarily invincible and is able to defeat enemies simply by touching them. Also, when the player is invincible, invincibility music is played. In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Starman is used to turn a player invincible; however, the invincible character can't deal damage to other players by simply touching them. A remix of the invincibility music from the Mario series can be heard when a player gets a Starman in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Description from the Super Smash Bros. Instruction Booklet

The character who grabs the Star becomes INVINCIBLE! ...but only for a short while.

Trophy Info

The Starman trophy from Melee.

In Melee

Trophy #250
This item makes you invulnerable to all attacks for a short period of time. The Starman bounces around and eventually tumbles out of the stage, but all you need to do is touch it to power up. It possessed similar powers in Super Mario Bros., except you could also harm enemies just by touching them while under its influence.

NES: Super Mario Bros.
The Super Star trophy from Brawl.

In Brawl

An erratically bouncing item that is hard to catch. If you can grab it, though, you'll be invulnerable to all attacks for a short time. In addition, no one will be able to grab or throw you, either. Make the effort to grab the Starman when it appears—watching your opponents turn and run from you makes it all worthwhile.

NES: Super Mario Bros.
SNES: Super Mario World

Trivia

  • Characters who have grabbed the Starman can avoid the acid in Planet Zebes and Brinstar and lava on Norfair, resulting in a self-destruct if players fall through it.
  • If Snake obtains the Starman and uses his Final Smash, the visual effect of the Starman will still appear. This happens whenever he uses an item that gives a visual effect, like the Smoke Ball.
  • When a character becomes invincible after grabbing a Starman, Bulborbs will still be able to trap the character.
