KOWLOON 15 with Sumabato 15th anniversary was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Izumisano City, Osaka from March 22nd-23rd, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
After two weeks with no majors, Kowloon 15 returned as a supermajor, the seventh of the 2025 season, and the fifth for Japan; however, due to the relatively-low top 10 attendance, as Asimo and Raru were the sole top 10 representatives, and the absence of Japan's 4 best players at that time — Hurt, acola, Miya and Shuton — some players questioned whether this truly was a supermajor. This tournament is the second time that is organized a crossover between the KOWLOON and the Sumabato series, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the later, which has become one of Japan's most famous tournament series alongside Umebura and Kagaribi, especially since the Smash 4 days. Compared to Sumabato SP 56, the previous japanese major, the upsets were relatively low, as only 3 of the top 8 seeds didn't make into top 8. #4 seed Snow was eliminated at 9th, suffering a early loss to #100 seed Nakatae 1-3 (upset factor 10, the biggest of the tournament), before losing to #1 seed Raru, who himself was upset by #8 seed TamaPDaifuku 1-3 (UF 5) the round prior. #6 seed Raki would fall at 17th place, courtesy of #11 seed Toriguri (1-3, UF 2) and #40 seed Kuhaku (1-3, UF 6). Lastly, #5 seed Akakikusu would be eliminated at 65th, losing back to back sets to #60 seed Tora 2-3 (UF 7) and #29 seed Mild na H.O 1-3 (UF 5), his worst result since Kagaribi 10 almost two years ago.
The 3 players to make top 8 despite not being top 8 seeds all solidified previous good performances. #27 seed Mark, around two months after his first top 8 at a major at Seibugeki 18, made several upsets over #28 seed DieGorou 3-1, #18 seed Navy 3-1, #23 seed Karaage 3-0 and lastly #11 seed Toriguri 3-1 (UF 4) to make top 8. Despite a good performance against #2 seed Doramigi, sent to loser's early by #7 seed KEN in a close game 5 set (UF 4), Mark would be eliminated at 7th. #20 seed Taikei was also eliminated at 7th, by #12 seed Carmelo in Winner's and #1 seed Raru in his loser's run 0-3, his first major top 8 after his 2nd-place finish at Sumabato SP 53 in November 2024. Lastly, #12 seed Carmelo became the only non-top 8 seed to enter top 8 in the Winners side, notably defeating #21 seed Ryuoh 3-0, Mark 3-2 and Taikei 3-0. Inside top 8, he swept TamaPDaifuku 3-0 before losing, both in 3-1, to #3 seed Asimo and Raru for 3rd, reaching a new high in his competitive career.
In top 8, Raru, like Sumabato SP 56 a month before, made a huge loser's run to reach grand finals against Asimo, defeating Taikei at 7th, KEN at 5th 3-1, TamaPDaifuku in the rematch 3-1 at 4th and lastly Carmelo at 3rd. Asimo, after a close game 5 set against #94 seed Shion, swept Toriguri, KEN and Carmelo all in 3-1 to enter grand finals winner's side. Although Raru managed to reset the bracket in a dominating 3-0, Asimowon the reset after Raru SD'd in the final game, allowing Asimo to win his second supermajor after Sumabato SP 51 back in September 2024.
