Sumabato SP 56 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superregional held in Daito City, Osaka, Kansai on February 22nd, 2025.

Tournament summary[edit]

Due to the event featuring very little top 30 players, with Raru being the only one, SmashWiki does not consider this event a major.

After three consecutives underperformances at the previous Sumabatos (17th at the 55th edition, 13th at the 54th and 17th at the 53th), Raru, as the first seed and the only top 10 player in attendance, won the tournament. However, it was not easy, as Raru was sent to loser's early by Duck Hunt main and #49 seed Jagabata 1-3 (upset factor 11), despite using his secondary Min Min to counterpick this versatile matchup for Luigi. He would then go on a long loser's run, defeating, in order, #11 seed Kaninabe, #25 seed Tsuna and #26 seed Furararamen all in 3-0 to enter top 8. In top 8, he defeated #10 seed Shion, #37 seed Kuhaku and #15 seed Shirayuki all in 3-1 before meeting Jagabata once again, who already made the best Duck Hunt performance in post-COVID Ultimate by far. After trying once again his secondary Min Min to no avail in game 1 and 2, Raru went back to his trusty Luigi and manage to reverse 3-0 Jagabata. In grand finals, he faced Yone_pi and managed to beat him twice 3-1 to claim his third Sumabato win and his fourth A tier. Although he was upset early, this win put an end to Raru's slump since his first place at UltCore Fourth in November 2024.

However, Raru's 9 set long loser's run was overshadowed by the chaos of upsets that took place at this event, as aside from #5 seed Lv.1 DQ'ing, Raru was the sole top 8 seed to enter top 8, similar to Gen 1.1 back in April 2023 #2 seed Raki was upset in the second round of pools by #133 seed Ton 1-2 for a upset factor 13, the biggest of the tournament and one of the biggest in Ultimate competitive history, before losing to #11 seed Kaninabe 2-3 (UF 5) for 33rd. #3 seed Akakikusu was the only top 8 seed relatively close to enter top 8, as he was double-eliminated by Yone_pi (UF 6) and fellow Hero main Shion (UF 4), both in 1-3, placing 9th. #4 seed Rarikkusu was the earliest top 8 seed to be eliminated, suffering upsets from #68 seed Meido 3-0 (UF 9) and #45 seed Rokki 2-3 (UF 7) to place 49th. Both #6 seed Navy and #8 seed Fui were eliminated at 33rd, as they lost to #27 seed Leaf 1-3 (UF 5) and #28 seed YamaD 2-3 (UF 5) and #25 seed Tsuna 1-3 (UF 4) and #77 seed Momon 2-3 (UF 7) respectively. Lastly, #7 seed Uame placed 25th, losing in winners to #26 seed Furararamen 2-3 (UF 4) and #10 seed Shion 1-3.

As mentioned before, Jagabata made the best run for a Duck Hunt player since the COVID era (more precisely, the best run since Raito's fifth place finsih at EVO 2019, more than five years ago), upsetting Raru as well as #24 seed MildnaH.O (UF 3) 3-2 and #37 seed Kuhaku 3-0 before losing to Yone_pi 0-3 and being reversed 3-0 by Raru. Yone_pi similarly made the best performance for a Pichu player since the early days of competitive Ultimate, upsetting Kaninabe, Akakikusu and #15 seed Shirayuki 3-1, making grand finals winner side before losing twice to Raru for 2nd, the best result for a Pichu player since Nietono's win at Umebura SP 3 in April 2019, almost six years ago. In fourth place, Shirayuki would make his first A tier top 8 since Maesuma'JAPAN West 24 in August 2024, with notable wins over #18 seed DieGorou, Furararamen and MildnaH.O, losing to Yone_Pi and Raru. In fifth place, two Donkey Kong mains, in Kuhaku and MildnaH.O, made great upsets. MildnaH.O upset #9 seed Alice 3-1 as well as beating Tsuna before being upset by Jagabata after a close game 5 set (UF 3). In loser's, he lastly defeated #23 seed Ryopei 3-1 to make his first A tier top 8, where he swiftly 3-0'd Leaf before losing to Shirayuki. #37 seed Kuhaku also placed fifth after upsetting #12 seed Ryuoh 3-1 (UF 4), losing to Jagabata and Raru, also making his first A Tier top 8 appearance. After being upset by Ryopei's Snake 1-3, Shion made a short but stacked loser's run, defeating Uame, #20 seed Gachipi, Ryuoh and lastly Akakikusu before being stopped in Raru's loser's run for 7th place. Lastly, the world's best Robin player, Leaf, made the first A tier top 8 of his character, upsetting Navy and Alice 3-2 (UF 3), losing to Yone_pi 1-3 and MildnaH.O 0-3 for 7th place.
