Sumabato SP 59 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture on June 22nd, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
Despite being a relatively stacked tournament, featuring Doramigi, a frontrunner for the number 1 spot for the half season ranking, as well as two top 10 players in Raru and Asimo, a lot of attention was focused on Hurt. After his 2 month self ban that ended on June 1st, this tournament was his first major since Battle of BC 7. Coming as the fourth seed and as the winner of a regional, Maesuma'LANDMARK 6, the day prior, Hurt entered top 8 winner side rather easily, only dropping two games to #45 seed KORINKU1219. And despite his favorable head to head against the first seed Raru, the Luigi main quickly 3-0'd Hurt. In loser's bracket, he defeated #7 seed Raki 3-1 and #13 seed Yaura 3-0 before facing Raru again, who was sent to loser's by #2 seed Doramigi. In a complete reverse of their previous match, Hurt 3-0'd Raru's Luigi and Min Min (upset factor 3). But Doramigi easily defeated the Snake main in grand finals, including his desperate Sonic counterpick in game 3.
Although this event, as well as Maesuma'LANDMARK 6 the day before, still put Hurt in a good place for being a top 5 player of the season despite his 2 month ban, it also all but confirmed Doramigi's current 1st place globally, especially since with his 3-0 win over Hurt, he tied the head to head against him (4-4). Sumabato SP 59 is Doramigi's third major win of the season and his fourth overall. His path to victory was particularly dominant, as he only dropped five games total, with only one game 5 set, against #31 seed Tas.
After previous editions (particularly the 56th edition) being upset heavy, this event marked the first time since the 52th edition (in October 2024) that at least half of the top 8 seeds made into top 8. As alongside Raki, Hurt, Raru and Doramigi, #6 seed Yoshidora was the fifth seed to make top 8, upsetting #3 seed Asimo 3-1 (his first victory over him after 3 consecutives loses) to reach winner's semis, but losing back to back sets to Doramigi 0-3 and Yaura 1-3 (UF 3) for 5th. Asimo would fail to enter top 8, as he was upset in the losers' bracket by #28 seed Crete 1-3 (UF 7, the biggest upset of the tournament), placing 9th. Crete also previously upset #5 seed Rarikkusu in a game 5 set (UF 5) and finished at 7th place, losing to #12 seed Gorioka 2-3 and Raki 0-3. Rarikkusu would fall at 33rd, losing to #16 seed Kaninabe 2-3 (UF 3). The last seed who didn't made into top 8 was #8 seed Lv.1, who DQ'd.
Outside of Crete, #18 seed Kome and #13 seed Yaura made into top 8. Kome finished at 7th place, upsetting Kaninabe 3-0 and defeating #23 seed Rokki 3-1 and #24 seed Naocha 3-2 before losing to Yaura 1-3, who made the longest loser's run of the tournament. The Samus main was upset in his second round by #116 seed Fentes 0-2 (UF 6), but managed to reach 4th place after winning 11 sets in a row, notably eliminating #10 seed Mild na H.O at 49th 3-2, #9 seed Shion at 25th 3-1, #12 seed Gorioka at 9th place 3-2, Kome at 7th and lastly Yoshidora at 5th, before being defeated by Hurt 0-3.
