Sumabato SP 57 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture on April 27th, 2025. It took place the weekend before Japan's Golden Week, and as such is considered one of the week's first major events.
Tournament summary[edit]
In spite of the event taking place at the same time as LVL UP EXPO 2025, who took away several Japanese players who frequented Sumabato events, Sumabato SP 57 was still able to reach major status, in part due to the presence of several European talent who were attending Kagaribi 13, including Sisqui, Susu, NaetorU, Oryon, and AndresFn. Though the event was eventually retiered to S tier on the UltRank 2025 TTS, as the event was missing several prominent Japanese players and had a relatively low top 50 count (with only 2 players from the LumiRank 2024.2 top 25 present), the event is only considered a major by most other sources, including SmashWiki.
Many upsets took place in pools of the bracket. Notably, #2 seed Rarikkusu went 2-2, losing to #63 seed Eko 2-3 (upset factor 10) and #44 seed Lunamado (upset factor 9) to finish 65th. In addition, French invader and #30 seed Raarchyor also fell incredibly early, losing to #99 seed Tukune (upset factor 4) before being eliminated by #67 seed Mokumoku 2-3 for 97th.
Rarikkusu wasn't the only top 8 seed to not match his seed however, as similarly to the last edition, a chaos of upsets caused five (six with Rarikkusu) other top 8 seeds to be eliminated before top 8. #8 seed Yone_pi, grand finalists of the last edition, was eliminated at 25th, losing to #25 seed Mark 0-3 (UF 4) and #41 seed Avaru 1-3 (UF 5), alongside #7 seed Yoshidora, upset by #26 seed Nyonoknb 2-3 (UF 4) and #24 seed DieGorou 0-3 (UF 3), his worst result since Umebura SP 11 in September 2024. #6 seed Lv.1 was eliminated at 13th place, losing his second set to #134 seed Inaba Koshi Hoshiyomi 1-2 (UF 10), and #5 seed Shion 1-3, who himself was upset the round prior by #21 seed 33Peranbox in a close game 5 set (UF 4). The Hero main was then eliminated by #13 seed Karaage 2-3 (UF 3) at 13th. Lastly, #3 seed Raki would fall at 9th, losing to #19 seed Gorioka and 33Peranbox, both UF 6 and both in game 5 sets. Only #4 seed Carmelo and #1 seed Asimo managed to avoid the chaos and entered top 8 winner side.
Several of the players who caused upsets over the top seeds end up replacing them. In his steady rise to top level since the start of the year, Mark made loser side top 8 by upsetting Yone_Pi, but also #14 seed MASA, #16 seed Sisqui and #15 seed MildnaH.O. After winning his set versus Yoshidora, Nyonoknb made his first major top 8, notably upsetting Mildna H.O in winner's quarters 3-2. Both Gorioka and 33Peranbox also made top 8 after upsetting Raki and Shion, the first through winner side, the second through loser side after losing to Carmelo's Aegis 0-3 in winner's quarters. The last two not top 8 seeds to enter top 8 are #9 seed Kaninabe, losing to Asimo in winner's quarters before beating #31 seed kept in loser's top 8 qualifier in two game 5 sets, and #27 seed Furararamen, upsetting #22 seed M.Pop0 and Karaage to make his and Isabelle's first major top 8. Therefore, none of the international players in attendance made top 8, and several of them, like Raarchyor, underperformed, especially EU's rising star Susu. As the tenth seed, the french Steve lost to #119 seed Reimari 1-2 (UF 7) and #52 seed Kinaji 1-2 (UF 5) for 49th.
In top 8, Asimo reached Grand Finals Winners side, defeating Carmelo and Gorioka (who had defeated Nyonoknb in a close game 5 set) 3-1. Facing against Asimo in Grand Finals was Carmelo, who eliminated Mark 3-2, 33Peranbox 3-0, and Gorioka at 3rd 3-1. In two close game 5 sets, Carmelo managed to reset the bracket and finally win the tournament, his first major victory after his streak of major top 8 since the start of the 2025 season, and cementing him as a top 20 player for the first half of the year. Carmelo became the fourth new Steve player to win an A tier event or higher within the timespan of a year (after Raki, crêpe salée, and Syrup). As such, Carmelo's victory reignited discussions regarding Steve's dominance in the metagame.
