Sumabato SP 58 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superregional held in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture on May 24th, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
The event was the first of three A tiers that took place in the same weekend in all of the three Smash superregions (with 95 Kings of Fields 5 in Europe and MomoCon 2025 in North America). However, due to a lack of top 25 players in attendance (with Asimo being the only one), SmashWiki does not consider this event a major.
After being close several times, Rarikkusu finally won his first A tier event. As the third seed, he easily entered top 8 winner side, only dropping two games. He then defeated #7 seed Mild na H.O 3-1, who had defeated him twice at OH-BAI-TOH-RI 2 almost a month ago. In winner's finals, instead of using Falco, he pick Steve to defeat #5 seed Lv.1. In his only game 5 set of his run, Rarikkusu managed to avoid being reversed 3-0 by the Toon Link main, entering grand finals winner side. His opponent in the loser side is #2 seed KEN, who, after being upset in winner's quarters by Mildna H.O 0-3 (Upset factor 4), tore through the loser's bracket, going game 5 against #10 seed Gorioka, #9 seed Yone_pi and Mildna in the runback, before defeating Lv.1 3-0 to reach grand finals. Rarikkusu opted for his Steve against KEN, who historically struggles against acola. But KEN made quick work of it, 3-0'ing Rarikkusu and resetting the grand finals. Taking notes from KEN's early loss (and also other losses to DK in the past), Rarikkusu switched to Donkey Kong, taking the set and the tournament in a 3-1 fashion.
Compared to previous editions of the Sumabato series, the bracket ran relatively close to what was predicted, as half of the top 8 seeds made into top 8:Rarikkusu, Mildna H.O, Lv.1 through winner side, and KEN through loser side. Lv.1's run to 3rd confirmed his return to form following his great run at Kagaribi 13, as it marks his best performance since his 4th place at Kowloon 12 with Kagaribi. The first seed and only top 10 player in attendance, Asimo, was upset very early by #65 seed hayassy (UF 12, tied for the biggest of the tournament) 2-3 before losing to #6 seed Shion, who was himself upset in his first set by #262 seed Yude 0-2 (UF 12, tied for the biggest of the tournament), in a another game 5 set (UF 4) for 25th, which marked Asimo's worst result since Umebura SP 11 in September 2024. Despite a grueling 8 sets loser's run which also included defeating #31 seed Shupi, Shion would also fall out of top 8, at 13th, losing to Gorioka 0-3. #4 seed Raki lost back to back sets to #13 seed Karaage 0-3 (UF 4) and Gorioka (UF 3) for 17th, while #8 seed Kaninabe was eliminated at 25th, losing to #25 seed F1re 0-3 (UF 4) and #45 seed Kyon 1-3 (UF 5).
In a similiar vein, the non top 8 seeds to make top 8 were seeded relatively close to it. #9 seed Yone_pi finished at 5th and #10 seed Gorioka finished at 7th, making back to back top 8 at Sumabatos events. #13 seed Karaage placed 5th defeating Raki, #20 seed Kept, #17 seed Kome and #18 seed DieGorou, the latter of whom finished at 7th.
