KOWLOON 16 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka on May 11th, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
Though Japan's Golden Week had ended a few days prior, several international players remained in Japan to compete at KOWLOON 16. As such, this became the first supermajor in the KOWLOON series, as well as the first Kyūshū major since KOWLOON 5 two years prior.
This tournament marked international players' best performance at a Japanese major: for the first time ever, there were more international players (6) than Japanese players (2) in top 8, and with Yoshidora being eliminated as the final Japanese player at 5th, only international players were playing in the top 4. The most notable Japanese underperformance was the first seed Miya, who first lost to #9 seed Onin 2-3 (upset factor 6) before being eliminated by Yoshidora 2-3 (upset factor 6) for 7th. Conversely, there were still several international players defeated or eliminated by Japanese players, most notably #10 seed Maister, who first lost to #74 seed Nagare 2-3 (upset factor 6) before being eliminated by #62 seed Miko 2-3 (upset factor 5) for 49th; and MkLeo, who was eliminated by Raki's Steve and Kazuya for 13th.
This event marked a return to form for Sonix: after failing to make top 8 at his last three supermajors, he was able to enter Top 8 on the Winners side, his first top 8 since Luminosity Makes Moves Miami 2024. He was eventually knocked into Losers by Glutonny, the first time Sonix had lost to Glutonny since Pound 2022, but was able to claw his way back into Grand Finals to fight Onin. However, continuing a recent trend of Steve players besting him despite him being proficient in the Steve-Sonic matchup, Sonix lost to Onin 0-3 in Grand Finals to place 2nd. This began a new streak of 2nd-place finishes for Sonix that mirrored his streak in the previous year.
Onin's victory at the event marked their third major/supermajor win of their career, as well as their first since Super Smash Con 2022 almost three years prior. In addition, Onin became the third international player to win a Japanese major/supermajor, after Sparg0's win at Kagaribi 10 and Glutonny's win at UltCore Second, as well as the first American player to do so.
Outside of that performance, this event was the first time Sparg0 used Piranha Plant at a sizeable event. He used the character against Light, who had defeated Sparg0 in their last three matches, and won 3-1, including a 3-stock in the 4th game. This win led many to compare the set to Light's match against Nairo's Ganondorf at Collision 2019.
