Cloud (クラウド, Cloud) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was confirmed on June 12th, 2018. Cloud is classified as fighter #61.

Takahiro Sakurai reprises his role as Cloud's voice through his recordings from Super Smash Bros. 4.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Cloud's model features a more subdued color scheme. His clothing features subtle detailing.

Attributes

  • Buff Like all characters, Cloud's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete (down from 4).
  • Buff Cloud dashes much faster.
  • Change Cloud's Limit Break gauge is shown persistently above his damage meter.

Ground attacks

  • Neutral attack:
    • Nerf Consecutive jabs are slower.
    • Change Cloud's leg for the first attack is angled lower, making the animation more consistent with the hitbox.
  • Forward smash:
    • Nerf Forward smash has slightly increased ending lag.
  • Up smash:
    • Nerf Up smash has slightly increased ending lag.
  • Down smash:
    • Nerf Both hits of down smash deal less damage.

Aerial attacks

  • Buff All aerials have less landing lag.
  • Neutral aerial:
    • Nerf Neutral aerial has an altered animation with reduced range.
  • Up aerial:
    • Nerf Up aerial starts up 1 frame slower, removing its low initial hitbox and preventing it from hitting grounded opponents as easily.
    • Nerf Up aerial's range is slightly reduced.
    • Nerf Up aerial autocancels later, no longer doing so from a short hop fast fall.
    • Change Up aerial does less damage, which helps its combo ability but weakens its KO potential.
  • Down aerial:
    • Nerf Down aerial autocancels later and has less active frames.

Throws/other attacks

  • Nerf All grabs have increased startup and ending lag.

Special Moves

  • Cross Slash:
    • Change Cross Slash's visual effects have a sharper design inspired by Dissidia Final Fantasy instead of the brush-like strokes from Smash 4.
      • Buff Cross Slash has more horizontal range.
      • Change Limit Cross Slash's strikes slow down significantly when hitting a shield.
      • Change Limit Cross Slash now causes the zoom in effect when hitting a player.
  • Climhazzard:
    • Buff There is now a wider window for Climhazzard's downward slash to snap the ledge.
      • Buff Climhazzard's downward slash has less endlag and the grounded hit connects more reliably.
      • Nerf The sourspot of Climhazzard's downward slash has significantly less base knockback.
  • Limit Charge / Finishing Touch:
    • Nerf Cloud can no longer cancel Limit Charge instantly, increasing his vulnerability while charging.
    • Nerf Cloud will lose his Limit Break if it is not used within 15 seconds of reaching full charge, requiring it to be charged again.
    • Nerf If Cloud takes damage while using Limit Charge, he will now lose some Limit.[1]
    • Nerf Finishing Touch has a smaller hitbox.
      • Buff Finishing Touch's front hitbox is 2 frames faster, while the back hitbox is 3 frames faster.

Trivia

  • A section of Cloud's trailer picture him using his side taunt with R.O.B. in the distance, who is promptly struck by either Pikachu's or Pichu's Thunder. This is a direct reference to magic-casting and its animation in Final Fantasy, with Thunder being a basic black magic spell.
  • Cloud’s official render resembles his idle animation from Final Fantasy VII and Super Smash Bros., as well as Ike's official render for Brawl.
  • With Marth and Roy now dubbed in English for international releases of Ultimate, Cloud is the only playable character with an established English voice actor to speak Japanese in all versions of Ultimate.
