—Introduction Tagline

Greninja (ゲッコウガ, Gekkouga) appears as a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed during the April 8th Super Smash Bros. Direct. At E3 2014, Sakurai shared that most of the initial roster was established early in development that mandated a new Pokémon character, before Pokémon X and Y was announced. He worked very closely with Pokémon's developers to create Greninja, but most of its moveset was improvised due to Sakurai's only reference being Game Freak's conceptual artwork.

Moveset

  • Greninja is able to crawl and wall cling.
  • Greninja's down taunt can do damage with a slight wind effect just above the water.
Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 2%, 1% then 3% (6% total) or 1% per hit then 2% A three-hit jab combo ending in either a double forward palm stationary blast of water, or a rapid-slap infinite of small water waves that ends in an outward swipe causing a water burst.
Forward tilt 6% Kicks straight forward via forward hooking kick in a turn. Can be angled.
Up tilt 4% Licks upward with his tongue in a forward overhead "cape smack".
Down tilt 7% A quick low kick.
Dash attack 7% A low dashing sweep kick.
Forward smash 14-19% Slashes forward with a water sword/katana in a reverse grip inward slash. Can be pivot-cancelled.
Up smash 5-7% (first hit), 14-19% (second hit) Slashes above (via a double stab) and to the side (with an outward rip) with two water swords both in reverse grip in an outwards arc. Can do two hits from below.
Down smash 13-18% Strikes both sides simultaneously with water swords, both in reverse grip.
Neutral aerial 6-11% Enters a ninja pose while a burst of water emits around him, with the inner and sooner frames of the attack inflicting more damage.
Forward aerial 14% Same as the ground version, only it can't be charged and is a bit slow for an aerial, though strong.
Back aerial 3%, 2%, 4% (9% total) Performs three back kicks, high, low, then mid.
Up aerial 1% x3, then 2%, then 1%, then 3% (9% total) An upwards drill kick, similar to Sheik or Samus.
Down aerial 8% A very fast stall-then-fall which bounces off of enemies. Bouncing off enemies deprives Greninja of its double jump. If sweetspotted, it meteor smashes opponents. However, spamming it on opponents may warrant a punish or a miss depending on how far it knocks the target back.
Grab Grabs the opponent with a whirlpool by making ninja hand signs.
Pummel 2% Makes the whirlpool squeeze the opponent.
Forward throw 5% Throws the opponent forward with a forward palm move.
Back throw 8% Leans back and flings the opponent backwards.
Up throw 5% Throws opponent upwards with a single arm gesture on a erect stance.
Down throw 6% Throws opponents into the floor in front of him.
Floor attack (front) ?% Sweep kicks around him while getting up.
Floor attack (back) ?%
Floor attack (trip) ?%
Edge attack (fast) ?% Kicks the opponent's legs and gets back up.
Neutral special Water Shuriken 3% uncharged, 12% charged A chargeable projectile move which cannot be stored and will automatically fire once fully charged. Uncharged shuriken hit for damage with little knockback. When fully charged, this attack damages opponents multiple times and carries them backwards, sending them flying on the last hit. This move travels parallel to the ground when standing on a slope.
Neutral special custom 1 Stagnant Shuriken 6% uncharged 14% fully charged Greninja fires a shuriken that stays in place.
Neutral special custom 2 Shifting Shuriken 3% uncharged and fully charged The Shuriken acts different depending on whether the button is tapped or held. The speed of the shuriken is determined by how long the button is pressed.
Side special Shadow Sneak 10% While holding B, Greninja's shadow moves forwards along the ground. Greninja can move around while the move charges. Once released, Greninja will teleport to the shadow's position and perform a kick based on his position relative to the other opponents. When used in the air, the shadow will still move along the ground, but Greninja will teleport horizontally without gaining or losing vertical height. Greninja will not go into helpless after an aerial Shadow Sneak, and can still use Hydro Pump to further recover. This move cannot be held indefinitely.
Side special custom 1 Intense Shadow Sneak ?% ?
Side special custom 2 Speedy Shadow Sneak ?% Greninja teleports a fixed distance. Its less flexible than shadow sneak, but more speedy.
Up special Hydro Pump ?% Greninja shoots a stream of water from his palms, sending him upwards. Can function similarly to Pikachu's Quick Attack, in that he can move in two different directions. Greninja can also choose to instead travel in a single direction for a longer period of time.
Up special custom 1 Single Pump ?% ?
Up special custom 2 High Capacity Pump 0% Slower pumps, but it goes slightly higher.
Down special Substitute ?% A countering move, allowing Greninja to teleport and attack foes with a flying kick. If a direction is held after countering, Greninja can be made to appear from the front, back, or above the opponent.
Down special custom 1 Exploding Attack 10% Greninja vanishes and then reappears causing an explosion, damaging nearby fighters. Does not counter.
Down special custom 2 Substitute Ambush ?% Greninja uses Substitute, then a delay occurs before Greninja teleports and attacks with a flying kick. Stronger than Substitute.
Final Smash Secret Ninja Attack ?% Similar to Galaxia Darkness, Greninja has to face its opponent to initiate the Final Smash. It will hit its opponent with a mat flipped up (a possible reference to one of Greninja's signature moves, Mat Block) and immediately launch the opponent into the sky in a dark silhouette illuminated by a full moon. Greninja will proceed to rapidly strike the opponent and finish with a slash, launching the opponent back towards the stage, similar to Great Aether.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy descriptions

Greninja
This Water/Dark-type Pokémon is the fully evolved form of Froakie. It's just as fast and dangerous as any other ninja, and the throwing stars it can make out of water can shear metal. In Smash Bros., as well as being a graceful, speedy fighter, it can also use moves like Hydro Pump that let it travel through the air and avoid falling.
Greninja (Alt.)
Greninja's Substitute down special lets you teleport to dodge attacks and then strike back, making it an effective and hard-to-predict way to counterattack. You can also control where you reappear by inputting directions. When you vanish, sometimes you'll be replaced by a log, other times by a cuddly toy.

Trivia

  • Greninja's artwork used on the official site was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, an artist of GAME FREAK that has drawn Pokémon's official artwork since Pokémon's first generation.
  • Greninja is one of two Pokémon to not have a custom move share its name with an actual Pokémon attack, the other being Lucario.
