DLC characters[edit]

Should we really have an entire row dedicated to DLC characters in the template? DLC is how they're obtained, while the veteran/newcomer rows have nothing at all to do with how they're obtained.

- New/Old Status - - New/Old Status - -Obtaining Method-

is a rather strange way to lay out this template. Not to mention that there is only one downloadable character right now. My recommendation is to just put (DLC) or something similar next to Mewtwo with him in the veterans row. Dracyoshi (talk) 06:32, 24 October 2014 (EDT)

A (DLC) tag is probably a good idea. If we get more DLC characters in the future, putting "(DLC)" after all of them might get cluttered, so I'd suggest changing it then to a footnote where each character has an asterisk (or cross or whatever) next to their name, with "*DLC" at the bottom of the template. MMH (talk) 19:54, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
As it stands, Mewtwo seems to be a one-off case. Should additional DLC characters be announed, I'd advocate a new row for them at the bottom. Otherwise, though, it's rather unnecessary on a template this streamlined. Miles (talk) 20:01, 24 October 2014 (EDT)

You're kidding, right?[edit]

Does adding a DLC veterans section really deserve an "absolutely not"? I mean you said in the section above that it might be preferable once we get more; well guess what, WE GOT MORE. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe Nutta. 17:44, 3 April 2015 (EDT)

Let me clarify then: once we have enough "more" that it is similar in size to the newcomer row, maybe. As it stands, it's really not needed in the slightest. Miles (talk) 17:46, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
But as it is right now, there's nothing making it obvious that Mewtwo and Lucas are DLC. And that's something very notable. If we want to present information, we need to present all information possible. Besides, we know there will be at least one more DLC character (the ballot), so that's three. I don't see why it needs to be a certain size; it's still a different category. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe Nutta. 17:48, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
Let me put it this way: a character's status as DLC is analogous to their status as starter/unlockable. This template isn't sorting characters by starter/unlockable status, but by veteran/newcomer status. The places that note their DLC status, like Template:SSB4 character table, are ones which already mentioned starter/unlockable status. Does that make sense? Miles (talk) 17:52, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
Except there's a large difference between starter/unlockable and DLC. (Also I'm not particularly fond of how you phrased that as if to talk down to me.) With the fact that Mewtwo and Lucas are not in the game unless you pay for them, they are in their own category. They aren't in the game if you don't purchase them. Starters and unlockables are constantly there. With such an important differentiation, we need someway to show it. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe Nutta. 17:56, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
There isn't a difference. DLC is a paid unlock method. Their DLC status is (as it should be) reported in all locations that for other characters report their starter/unlockable status. That's how it should be. Miles (talk) 17:58, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
"Mewtwo and Lucas are not in the game unless you pay for them" We do not know for sure whether this is the case. The other possibility is that the updates that everyone downloads contain the characters, and you can play against other people who have them online, they're just greyed out on the selection screen or something. Even so, the way it's presented now, it looks like they're already in the game just waiting to be used. Users often come here to see what characters they need to unlock and such, or what characters are in the game, etc. (I know this because that's the only reason I'm on the site). If someone comes to this template to see what characters are in without any other knowledge (which, again, I know can happen because that was me), they're going to think "OH YAY MEWTWO IS BACK I'M GOING TO BUY THIS GAME TO GET HIM", and then be sorely disappointed when they have to pay twelve bucks to get him. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Are you assuming that users are not going to read even the first sentence of Mewtwo (SSB4)? Miles (talk) 18:22, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
If they don't know who's on the roster? No, they won't immediately go to the page of a character on the roster. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe Nutta. 18:26, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
Following your example, I find it hard to believe anyone would decide to buy a game based on Mewtwo's presence in the roster without clicking on its page. Miles (talk) 18:57, 3 April 2015 (EDT)

What if we compromised with, say, asterisks for the DLC characters? Obviously, something more noticeable would be preferred. 72.152.70.243 18:30, 3 April 2015 (EDT)

I'd prefer something more like what's seen on the character table (with a (DLC)), but yeah, that'd be fine. (It saddens me that an IP had to do an admin's job, though.) ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe Nutta. 18:32, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
I think that if any such differentiation were to be done, it would be with italics or something, though the subsequently-necessary "this is what the italics mean" text would also be an eyesore. At this point I think we should keep things simple and undifferentiated until we know exactly how things will work. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Jiggy 21:52, 3 April 2015 (EDT)
