—Introduction Tagline

Greninja (ゲッコウガ, Gekkouga) has been confirmed as a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed during the April 8th Super Smash Bros. Direct. At E3 2014, Sakurai shared that most of the initial roster was established early in development that mandated a new Pokémon character, before Pokémon X and Y was announced. He worked very closely with Pokémon's developers to create Greninja, but most of its moveset was improvised due to Sakurai's only reference being Game Freak's conceptual artwork.

Known moveset

  • Has a 3 hit jab combo and a jab infinite, similarly to Pit.
  • Forward tilt is forward kick.
  • Up tilt strikes upward with tongue.
  • Down tilt is a quick low kick.
  • Dash attack is a sliding kick.
  • Forward smash strikes at close range forward with a water sword.
  • Up smash strikes with two water swords in an outward arc.
  • Down smash strikes both sides simultaneously with two water swords.
  • Grab involves a whirlpool.
  • Neutral air is a spinning tongue whip.
  • Up air spins while upsidedown, hitting with feet multiple times.
  • Down air is a very fast stall-then-fall which bounces off of enemies.
  • Forward air slashes forward with a water sword.
  • Back air kicks backwards multiple times.
  • Greninja is able to crawl and wall cling.

Special moves

In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants, but none of Greninja's have been seen. These are Greninja's special moves:

  • Neutral Special: Water Shuriken. A chargeable projectile. When charged, this attack damages opponents multiple times. Charge cannot be stored. Is fired along a slope when standing on one.
  • Side Special: Shadow Sneak. It can be used to vanish and ambush opponents; Greninja can move while charging it. Cannot be held indefinitely.
  • Down Special: Substitute. A countering move, allowing Greninja to teleport and attack foes, even from afar. If a direction is held after countering, Greninja will appear from the opposite side of the attacker and attack in the direction held.
  • Up Special: Name not known, but Greninja can use water to ascend in multiple directions. Functions similarly to Quick Attack.

Final Smash

Similar to Galaxia Darkness, Greninja has to face its opponent to initiate the Final Smash. It will hit its opponent with a mat flipped up (a possible reference to one of Greninja's signature moves, Mat Block) and immediately launch the opponent into the sky in a dark silhouette illuminated by a full moon. Greninja will proceed to rapidly strike the opponent and finish with a slash, launching the opponent back towards the stage, similar to Great Aether.

Palette Swaps

  • Blue: Greninja's normal appearance in the Pokémon series.
  • Red: A red recoloring of Greninja.
  • Pink: A pink recoloring of Greninja that resembles Lickitung.
  • Black: A black recoloring that resembles Greninja's shiny form.
