Article on Zelda Wiki Spirit Train

Spirit Train (汽車, Train) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. The stage is based upon the Spirit Train in Nintendo DS title The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which is traveling through New Hyrule. In the Developer Direct, the main theme of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks could be heard during gameplay.

Overview

The battle takes place upon the Spirit Train, which is moving forwards during gameplay. The characters would be left behind if they stood on the train tracks, similarly to the road in Big Blue.

Characters can fight inside the carriage of the train. The roof of the carriage is a soft platform. The train is also towing another platform behind it. Birds will occasionally carry another aerial platform on-screen. Players can also stand on top of the train itself. The train is being driven by Link, in his Spirit Tracks appearance. Conductor Link stands in the background, and does not interact with the fighters. However, if Link or Toon Link are fighting, Alfonzo will be conducting the train instead.

The rear carriage will be able to "change" during battle, by the train backing to the right blast line, then pulling forward with a new rear carriage. Variations:

  • Basic Carriage
  • Broken Carriage; has a break down the middle, making for accidental landing on the track rather than the platform
  • Multi-platform Carriage; has several platforms elevated above the carriage
  • Coal Carriage

Dark Trains and Armored Trains also appear on the stage. They affect the train by ramming into it, pushing it towards the opposite blast line. They can also explode.

If players land on the tracks behind the train, they will be quickly taken off to the right of the screen if they do not jump fast, like the road in Big Blue. However, if they land in front of the train, the train will ram them, dealing damage and vertical knockback.

Any item that touches the tracks immediately disappears, except the Soccer Ball, Sandbag and Smash Ball.

Origin

The Spirit Train first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, where Link would drive it around New Hyrule to reach various destinations. The Spirit Train's design is how it appears in Spirit Tracks with the Solid Passenger Car, which comes with the train engine itself, and different rear carriages that can appear on the stage; one of them being the Trusty Freight Truck add-on from Spirit Tracks. Dark Trains, enemy trains in Spirit Tracks that try ramming into the Spirit Train, also appear in this stage as possible platforms. In this stage, Link wears his engineer outfit from Spirit Tracks.

Trivia

  • If one were to customize Sonic and give him all speed-based equipment, and combine that with a Bunny Hood and Superspicy Curry, he can actually outrun the train.
  • File:AlfonzoMeme.png
An example of the meme, where Alfonzo replaces Mother Brain.
The Miiverse post revealing Alfonzo's role became somewhat of a meme, with several highly requested characters who had been revealed in other roles being used in often poor edits, replacing "conducting the train" with the character's confirmed role, including Palutena, Ridley, Ashley, and others.
