Spirit Train (汽車, Train) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. The stage is based upon the Spirit Train in Nintendo DS title The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which is traveling through New Hyrule. In the Developer Direct, the main theme of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks could be heard during gameplay.

Overview

The battle takes place upon the Spirit Train, which is moving forwards during gameplay. The characters would be left behind if they stood on the train tracks, similarly to the road in Big Blue.

Characters can fight inside the carriage of the train. The roof of the carriage is a soft platform. The train is also towing another platform behind it. Birds will occasionally carry another aerial platform on-screen. Players can also stand on top of the train itself. The train is being driven by Toon Link, in his Spirit Tracks appearance. Toon Link stands in the background, and does not interact with the fighters. However, when Toon Link himself "joins the battle", Alfonzo will be conducting the train instead. It was initially believed this meant Alfonzo will conduct when Toon Link is involved in a match on the Spirit Train. However, in a recent screenshot from after the Smash Direct, Alfonzo is seen conducting in a match that has four fighters, with none being Toon Link[1], making it unclear if Sakurai saying when Toon Link "joins the battle" meant when he's unlocked, or if the conditions for Alfonzo to appear have been altered since Sakurai's original post.

The rear carriage will be able to "change" during battle, including being able to detach and move backward. If players land on the tracks, they will be quickly taken off to the right of the screen if they do not jump fast, like the road in Big Blue.

Dark Trains and Armored Trains also appear on the stage. They affect the train by ramming into it. They can also explode.

The stage has been shown to be available in For Glory mode[1], meaning that it has a Final Destination variation, but the variation itself has yet to been seen.

Origin

The Spirit Train first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, where Link would drive it around New Hyrule to reach various destinations. The Spirit Train's design is how it appears in Spirit Tracks with the Solid Passenger Car, which comes with the train engine itself, and different rear carriages that can appear on the stage; one of them being the Trusty Freight Truck add-on from Spirit Tracks. Dark Trains, enemy trains in Spirit Tracks that try ramming into the Spirit Train, also appear in this stage as possible platforms. In this stage, Toon Link wears his engineer outfit from Spirit Tracks.
