Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), has been confirmed to return as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it now appears as a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

Confirmed information

• The following moves appear visually unchanged:
  • Forward tilt
  • Neutral aerial
  • Back throw
  • Flamethrower
  • Up taunt
• Charizard has a new aerial attack that involves scratching forward, similar to Bowser's forward aerial.
• Charizard has a new move where it turns into a fireball and shoots sideways. Charizard was shown to be stunned and collapsed on the ground briefly after performing this move.
• One of its Mega Evolutions, Mega Charizard X, has been confirmed to be in the game, though it's currently unknown if it is Charizard's Final Smash or if it mega evolves through other means.
• Charizard now appears to grab with his mouth.
