Sephiroth's moveset is unknown, but may include a counter (resembling Scintilla in Dissidia), as well as launching fireballs at opponents (resembling Shadow Flare in Dissidia). His final smash may include him transforming into Safer∙Sephiroth (his final boss form) for a large hit, possibly similarly to Giga Mac Punch. He also possesses the ability to summon his wing, although it is unknown how this is accomplished.

—Introduction Tagline

Sephiroth is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the third third-party fighter from Square Enix after Cloud and Hero. He was confirmed as a playable character on December 10th, 2020 at the 2020 Game Awards and will be released in December 2020.

Toshiyuki Morikawa reprises his role in at least the Japanese version of Ultimate, though it is currently unknown if he will be voiced in English.

Moveset

Sephiroth's moveset is unknown, but may include a counter (resembling Scintilla in Dissidia), as well as launching fireballs at opponents (resembling Shadow Flare in Dissidia). One of his moves has him slash multiple times in a line. His final smash may include him transforming into Safer∙Sephiroth (his final boss form) for a large hit, probably Super Nova, possibly similarly to Giga Mac Punch. He also possesses the ability to summon his wing, although it is unknown how this is accomplished.

Role in World of Light

Due to his status as downloadable content, Sephiroth does not have a legitimate role in World of Light. Instead, he is unlocked for use in the mode after freeing 10 fighters from Galeem's control. If loading an existing save file that meets this condition prior to downloading Sephiroth, he is immediately unlocked.

However, in his reveal trailer, he makes his presence known by slicing Galeem, which suggests he was present to some extent.

Trivia

  • Sephiroth is the second character to be revealed at a non-Nintendo event/presentation, the first being Joker. Coincidentally, both of them were revealed at the Game Awards (in 2018 and 2020 respectively).
  • Sephiroth is the first:
    • DLC character from a third-party universe that was DLC in a previous installment.
      • The Fire Emblem universe also shares this trait, and is the only first-party universe to have it.
    • Character from an already-represented third-party universe to not be a clone of another character.
    • Third-party playable antagonist.
    • Sephiroth's trailer is the first where previous Ultimate DLC fighters appear outside of gameplay footage, with the Dragon Quest III Hero and Banjo & Kazooie being present.
  • Sephiroth is the second character whose trailer references the World of Light, the first being Hero.
