Sandbag in Melee.

Sandbag (サンドバッグくん, Sandobaggu-kun) is the character that appears in the Stadium game "Home Run Contest" in both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In this mode, it stands perfectly still, so the player can hit it. Although it cannot be controlled by a player through normal means, it can if you have an Action Replay. It is simply programmed not to move in Home Run Contest. However, even though it is able to move and jump, it cannot attack. Instead, an attempt to attack causes the game to freeze along with additional undesirable effects. Sandbag is also strange because it cannot be KO'd. This is because in Home Run Contest, the only stage it is meant to be played on is the Home Run Contest stage, where if it was KO'd, the mini-game would not be playable. Instead, it continues moving in the direction it was sent moving, and can be seen by changing the camera angle. Sandbag's cute appearance and comical role in the series has gained it something of a fanbase. This fanbase was enough to get Sandbag on the bracket for GameFAQs 7th character battle. Sandbag came in second place in the first round, enough to advance, but was defeated in the second round. Sandbag's trophy in Melee informs the player that it does not hurt Sandbag if it is attacked, and it actually enjoys watching the players take their best shots at it. Sandbag's trophy can be obtained by completing the Home-Run Contest with all characters (Zelda or Sheik, Samus or ZSS, any Pokémon of Pokémon Trainer). If you watch the video of Lucas in Home-Run Contest that comes with Brawl, you can get some well-needed pointers if you are having problems getting this.

Sandbag is defined as a character in Melee; therefore he can be grabbed and thrown. However, in Brawl, he is defined as an item, meaning he cannot be grabbed (by either normal grabs or special moves that grab), though he can be eaten by Kirby, King Dedede, and Wario.

Sandbag may appear as an item during matches in Brawl, releasing items when attacked. In a match, Sandbag takes little horizontal knockback and cannot be KO'd by the upper blast line. Sandbag also appears like this in the Waiting Room, where an infinitely respawning Sandbag is provided to practice on.

Sandbag features prominently in the CD Factory, a type of stage in Stage Builder that abuses the Sandbag's tendency to drop Stickers and CDs when all items except sandbag are disabled.

There is a glitch that makes Sandbag invisible in Brawl. To perform this glitch, hit Kirby while he is swallowing a sandbag.

Melee

Sandbag exists for one reason only: to get smashed in the Home-Run Contest. Pound on Sandbag as much as possible in the time allotted, then swing for the fences as you compete for the longest home run of all time. Getting hit doesn't hurt Sandbag at all. As a matter of fact, it loves to see players wind up and let loose.

Brawl

An item that appears in the Home-Run Contest, where the goal is to do lots of damage to Sandbag, then send it flying as far as you can. It also appears in the regular game. If you smash it, a storm of confetti and items will burst out. Sandbag doesn't feel pain, though; in fact, it's happy to be of service.
