Yoshi's Island is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This time, it is based on the design of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (which is also used in Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi Touch & Go). It has a horizontal design, with two main platforms. The top one tilts during play. There is a ghost, called the Support Ghost, who appears and disappears at random, creating a temporary platform that can save recovering characters. The stage will also change between the four seasons during the match. This stage could be considered the "spiritual successor" to Yoshi's Island: Yoshi's Story from Melee, because they both have walls going to the bottom of the stage, they both have attackable Shy Guys that fly in with Food items and because of the Support Ghost's similarity to Randall the Cloud.

Origin

This stage is from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. In Yoshi's Island, the design of the stages look similar to drawings. In the first world, chain chomps appear in the background, go up in the sky, and try to fall on Yoshi. Each season represents some levels in Yoshi's Island. In the Brawl stage, the summer has smiling flowers that look like the collectible flowers used in Yoshi's Island to increase one's score. In YI, Shy Guys appear and carry stuff that one can get by throwing eggs at the Shy Guy. When the item is taken or if they stay on screen long enough they will fly away. Also from YI are the supporting ghosts, which served the same purpose. Then one had to jump over the shrunk ghost. The Goonies were enemies in YI. They appear in the stage during the summer and fall seasons. There are two chain chomps at the bottom of each side of the stage. They are just part of the background and do not affect gameplay at all.

Seasons

When the match begins, the season that players start on is entirely random. The changes that the seasons make to the stage are merely aesthetic - they do not affect the gameplay in any way.

• Spring: Scenery here distinctly resembles the pastel-drawn backgrounds of the Overworld stages in Yoshi's Island. Chain Chomps can be seen on both sides of the stage. Giant red tulips, like in the first level of Yoshi's Island, appear behind the stage.
• Summer: Flowers, resembling the Special Flowers in the original Yoshi's Island, sprout everywhere with the coming of summer.
• Autumn: Fall colors take over and stationary Goonies appear, hovering in the sky with a four-frame animation. Wheat grass appears in the background, but in the actual games, wheat grass is never actually found.
• Winter: Heavy snowfall is this season's main addition to the graphics. Like most weather effects in SSBB, the snow is not rendered in 3D. Pausing and angling the camera will reveal that it is only two-dimensional.

• There is an extra song that can play in this stage. The Obstacle Course that is listed in My Music and in the Sound Test is the variation that plays in the spring and summer seasons. There is another variation that plays during autumn and winter, but it is not available in the Sound Test, though it is available in the OST rip.

Trivia

• While using Captain Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day, a drawing of a moon can be seen in the sky. This moon was the location of the battle against World 5 boss Raphael the Raven in Yoshi's Island.
• This is the third stage in the series that has acquired the name "Yoshi's Island". Humorously, they have all been based off of different games.
• The Support Ghost can be seen off screen by pausing while it isn't supporting the characters.
• If a player's shield breaks while they are standing on one of the sloped parts at the end of the main platform, when they land they will roll off the stage, which cancels the shield break stun, and they will immediately regain consciousness, allowing them to move much sooner than normal.
• This is the only stage from one of the Mario sub-universes in Brawl not to be banned from any tournaments, and is the only Mario-related stage to be considered "neutral" - that is, can be used anytime (Delfino Plaza and Rainbow Cruise are almost always counter-picks, Luigi's Mansion and Melee's Yoshi's Island are either banned or counter-picks depending on the region [though the former has been banned more often in recent times], and all the others are usually banned).
