Cloud (クラウド, Cloud) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was confirmed on June 12th, 2018. Cloud is classified as fighter #61.

Takahiro Sakurai reprises his role as Cloud's voice through his recordings from Super Smash Bros. 4.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Cloud has been notably nerfed in Ultimate. His Limit Break mechanic, which was a key part of his prior success, has been given a timer of 15 seconds once fully charged, preventing players from saving it indefinitely for a special move and for the increased attributes. This potentially makes his poor recovery worse, as players cannot indefinitely save Limit when trying to recover with Climhazzard. However, Cloud retains his mobility, combo game, and fast aerials, the latter of which have all received even less landing lag than in SSB4.

Aesthetics

  •   As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Cloud's model features a more subdued color scheme. His clothing features subtle detailing.

Attributes

  •   Like all characters, Cloud's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete (down from 4).
  •   Cloud dashes much faster.
  •   Cloud's Limit Break gauge is shown persistently above his damage meter.

Ground attacks

Aerial moves

  •   All aerials have less landing lag.
  •   Neutral aerial has an altered animation with reduced range.
  • Up aerial:
    •   Up aerial has a higher hitbox during the sword's initial ascension, which prevents it from hitting grounded opponents as easily.
    •   Up aerial does less damage, which helps its combo ability but weakens its KO potential.
  •   Down aerial autocancels later.

Throws/other attacks

  •   Standing grab and dash grab have increased ending lag.

Special Moves

  •   Cross Slash's visual effects have a sharper design inspired by Dissidia Final Fantasy instead of the brush-like strokes from Smash 4.
    •   Cross Slash has more horizontal range.
    •   Limit Cross Slash's strikes slow down significantly when hitting a shield.
    •   Limit Cross Slash now causes the zoom in effect when hitting a player.
    •   Limit Cross Slash has significantly lowered knockback.
  •   There is now a wider window for Climhazzard's downward slash to snap the ledge.
    •   Climhazzard's downward slash has less endlag.
    •   The sourspot of Climhazzard's downward slash has significantly less base knockback.
  •   Cloud will lose his Limit Break if it is not used within 15 seconds of reaching full charge, requiring it to be charged again.
  •   If Cloud takes damage while using Limit Charge, he will now lose some Limit.[1]
  •   Finishing Touch has a smaller hitbox.
    •   Hitboxes appear earlier in Finishing Touch's animation.

Role in World of Light

Cloud was absent in the World of Light trailer, though he presumably became a spirit alongside the rest of the galaxy (except for Kirby) when Galeem unleashed its beams of light.

Trivia

  • A section of Cloud's trailer picture him using his side taunt with R.O.B. in the distance, who is promptly struck by either Pikachu's or Pichu's Thunder. This is a direct reference to magic-casting and its animation in Final Fantasy, with Thunder being a basic black magic spell.
  • Cloud’s official render resembles his idle animation from Final Fantasy VII and Super Smash Bros., as well as Ike's official render for Brawl.
  • With Marth and Roy now dubbed in English for international releases of Ultimate, Cloud is the only playable character with an established English voice actor to speak Japanese in all versions of Ultimate.
