Riptide 2025 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee major and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Sandusky, Ohio from September 5th-7th, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
Having dominated competitive play throughout the summer, the major storyline going into this event was whether Zain would perform a four-peat — winning four major tournaments at the same time. Zain was ultimately able to achieve this feat, winning the tournament after being reset by Cody Schwab in the first set of Grand Finals. This made Zain the fourth player to win four majors in a row, behind Ken, Armada, and Hungrybox, and the first player to do so in the post-Slippi metagame. In addition, this marked Zain's 22nd major win, which some sources claimed made Zain tie with Armada in the total number of major wins,[1] although on SmashWiki, Zain had already surpassed Armada's number after Supernova 2025.
This event was also a resurgence performance for Jmook, who was in a slump period throughout the first half of the year and who had recently fell out of the top 10 as a result. Jmook's run notably saw him defeat his bracket demon, Hungrybox, 3-2, and he claimed 2 additional top 10 wins by defeating Wizzrobe and Joshman 3-2, ultimately losing to Cody Schwab twice. Similarly, Axe also defeated Hungrybox, who was also his bracket demon, 3-1 using Fox, marking the first time he had defeated Hungrybox since MLG Anaheim 2014, and ending a 28-set losing streak against him. Finally, this event marked Smash Papi's first-ever major top 8; his run included wins over SDJ, RapMonster, and Preeminent. He was eliminated by Wizzrobe at 7th, and he notably used Bowser in the final set, marking the first time Bowser appeared in a top 8 major game in the modern era.
Conversely, this event was SDJ's first major where they failed to place single-digits since Tipped Off 15: Connected, as well as their worst major placement since The Big House 11; after losing to Smash Papi, they were eliminated by Joey Donuts 2-3 for 33rd.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
This event was initially tiered as a P tier, but several disqualifications, most notably Sonix, knocked this event down to just under the threshold. The event eventually returned to P tier following Toon's win at What's the Daily Smash Advice?. As such, this was the first time the series held back-to-back Ultimate major events.
During top 64, JeJaJeJa upset Snow in the losers bracket by camping at the ledge and performing Kirby's inhale to footstool gimp for a large number of stocks. This would spawn numerous memes on social media about Kirby players and JeJaJeJa's completely unapolagetic response.
Following a disappointing 40th-place ranking on the LumiRank Half Year 2025, owing to a lack of top 20 wins, Wrath was able to win several sets over top 20 players at this tournament, ultimately making top 8 at yet another supermajor. Wrath notably took out acola 3-0 (upset factor 6) before defeating both ShinyMark and Light to finish 5th. His win over Light was notably the first time he had defeated Light in his tournament career, having previously lost their last 7 sets. Conversely, acola lost to Syrup in a reverse 3-0 for 7th, the first time he ever lost to another Steve player in a serious set.
Otherwise, the event was notable for the top 3's performance being virtually the same as their performance in the last American supermajor, Supernova 2025. Doramigi first lost 3-2 to Hurt in Winners Semi-Finals, with Hurt using Snake for all 5 games. Hurt was then swiftly defeated by Miya 0-3, with Hurt choosing to use Sonic in the final game. Doramigi and Hurt faced off once again in Losers Finals, with Hurt using Snake for the first three games and Sonic for the final to no avail, as Doramigi defeated him 1-3. Miya then swept Doramigi in Grand Finals 3-0 to win the tournament, with Doramigi counterpicking to Luigi the first game. With Miya's back-to-back supermajor wins, a dominant record over Doramigi (4-0 since the start of the 2025 season), and his overall consistency since LVL UP EXPO 2025, some believed Miya has become a contender for the #1 position for the full year ranking, even in spite of a weaker start to the year.
