Smash Awesome! was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor tournament held in Tokyo, Japan, from December 21st-22nd, 2024.
Tournament summary[edit]
This tournament was the first supermajor of the LumiRank 2025 season. The most notable runs of the tournament would come from #21 seed uame and #22 seed Carmelo, who both achieved their first ever major Top 8's after falling just short at prior majors. uame reached Winner's Quarters with wins over tameigo, M0tsunabE (upset factor 2), and Nyonoknb before falling to Shuton's Pyra/Mythra. He would then defeat chicken and Carmelo before losing to acola to place 5th. Carmelo reached Winner's Top 32 with a win over Ryuoh (upset factor 2) before falling to Akakikusu 3-0. In Loser's bracket, he defeated M0tsunabE (upset factor 2), Karaage, and Tea (upset factor 3) to make it into Top 8 before falling to fellow first time Top 8 placer, uame. Another notable run came from #33 seed Kaninabe who placed 5th with wins over #17 seed Umeki (upset factor 2) and #8 seed Tea (upset factor 5) and made top 8 at a major for the first time since Port Priority 8 in 2023. Tea would finished at 9th, alongside #7 seed Lv.1, losing to #2 seed Acola before falling into #1 seed Miya's loser's run. The only top 8 seed to be eliminated very early was #5 seed KEN, who finished at 33rd, losing to #28 seed Nyonoknb (UF 5) 2-3, and #111 seed Onjoji (UF 9) 1-3.
Several others top players were upset, including the recently new major winner Raki at Sumabato SP 53 the month prior. As the ninth seed, Raki would finished at 129th, losing to #248 seed Sha (UF 9) 1-2 and #36 seed Leaf (UF4) 2-3, his worst performance tied with Kagaribi 12. The grand finalist who met Raki in said tournament, Taikei, also underperformed. As the tenth seed, Taikei lost to #55 seed Shion (UF 5) 2-3 and #135 seed Maipan (UF 8) 1-3, placing 65th, his worst result since Delta 8. Other underperformances included #23 seed Chag, the only notable international player, placing 65th after losing to #42 seed Kurofune and #154 seed Fu (UF 6) both in 0-3, #16 seed alice, losing to #144 seed Penguins (UF 7) in a close game 5 set before falling to Miya's loser's runs 1-3 and #11 seed Ryuoh, placing 33rd after being upset by Carmelo 0-3 before losing to Miya's Steve 1-3.
However, the tournament would also see a moderate underperformance from #1 seed Miya. He lost to sssr (upset factor 11) immediately after making it out of pools before going on a 7-set loser's runs to 7th where he would lose a close game 5 to Akakikusu (upset factor 4). On the other hand, the rest of the top 4 seeds, those being # 2 seed acola, #3 seed Hurt, and #4 seed Shuton in descending order, would all go on to place within the top 3 of the tournament, only losing to each other. Hurt and acola played each other in Winner's Semis with Hurt winning game 5 after fending off a reverse 3-0 attempt. However, he would then fall to Shuton in Winner's Finals in a convincing 3-0 fashion. After beating acola again in the Loser's Finals runback, he would face Shuton again in Grand Finals, resetting the bracket game 5. The reset would also go to game 5 where Hurt came out on top by reading Shuton's roll after he whiffed an up smash to land an up tilt KO, winning his first supermajor and Snake's first supermajor since Ally's win at Pound 2019 over 5 years prior.
