Fighter spirit

Revision as of 22:27, November 3, 2020 by Diddy Kongstar (talk | contribs) (The Mii Fighters' Origins tip and "The Year is 200X" tourney event claim the Wii to be their origin despite Mii Fighters being created for Smash and using the Smash Series Symbol)

Fighter spirits are a type of spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As the name suggests, they are spirits that are based on the playable roster in the game. Like master spirits, fighter spirits do not have any stats, as they are not used in gameplay in any way, though unlike master spirits, they are not used to assist the player at all, only being used for display purposes.

A character's fighter spirit is unlocked either when the player completes Classic Mode as that character, or they unlock it in the Vault shop for 300G. When the player views the fighter spirit in the Collection, the default artwork will be artwork from their home series, but the player can switch it with their artwork from Ultimate instead. Characters that have other characters as alternate costumes (such as gender swaps, the Koopalings, Alph, and the Dragon Quest III, IV, and VIII Heroes) or significant alternate costumes (such as Mario's Building and Wedding Outfits or Pikachu Libre) have separate fighter spirits from the base fighter than can only be unlocked in the Vault Shop. The Mario (Wedding), Meta Ridley, Ike (Path of Radiance), and Cloud (Advent Children) spirits can also be unlocked via challenges, and the Mario (Wedding) spirit can also be unlocked via the Wedding Mario amiibo.

Trivia

  • Several fighter spirits do not have artwork from their home series to swap with their Ultimate artwork, instead solely using their Ultimate artwork. These characters are Pokémon Trainer, Robin, Wii Fit Trainer, Cloud, and the Mii Fighters.
    • Cloud is the only third-party fighter with this distinction.
  • There are several significant alternate costumes which do not have their own fighter spirit, including:
    • Link's Tunic of the Wild costume.
    • Spiky-eared Pichu.
    • R.O.B.'s Famicom costume (including the Japanese version where the spirit image still uses a photograph of R.O.B.'s international colors).
    • Little Mac's wireframe alternate costume.
    • Isabelle's winter coat.
    • Zombie and Enderman, though they are represented as primary spirits.
      • This makes Zombie and Enderman the only characters (or alternate characters) to not have Fighter Spirits.
  • Excluding the ones who only use their Ultimate artwork, PAC-MAN and Bayonetta (Bayonetta), are the only fighter spirits that use artwork from a game outside of their own series, specifically from the Sonic and Anarchy Reigns series respectively.
  • Super Mario has the most fighter spirits out of any series including the spin-off universes as well.
  • The Legend of Zelda is the only universe with multiple fighters whose fighter spirits are not organized by Fighter number.
    • If it was organized by Fighter number, Sheik would be placed before Zelda and Young Link would be placed before Ganondorf.
    • Similarly, the Koopalings are not ordered the same way as they are on the character selection screen when selecting Bowser Jr.'s alternate costumes.
  • Meta Ridley and Ike (Path of Radiance) are the only fighter spirits that cannot be unlocked via the Vault Shop.
  • Lucas, Mr. Game and Watch, and the Ice Climbers are the only fighters to use sprites for their fighter spirits.
  • Ness and R.O.B. are the only fighters to use real-life photographs for their fighter spirits.
  • In the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean versions, R.O.B.’s default costume is with his Famicom Robot colors, but his fighter spirit still uses the Robotic Operating Buddy.
  • Min Min is currently the only character who had a spirit before becoming playable; as such, her fighter spirit is denoted with "(Fighter)".
    • She, Piranha Plant and Byleth are also the only fighter spirits that are not listed before their series' primary and support spirits (if not counting the former and latter's DLC Spirits), as the respective ARMS, Super Mario and Fire Emblem spirits that are part of the base game precede them.
  • Although Luma is one half of a duo fighter alongside Rosalina, it is not acknowledged by name or artwork in Rosalina's fighter spirit (aside from their Ultimate artwork). Luma instead appears as a separate support spirit.
