Charmander is a somewhat small bipedal orange lizard with a flame perpetually burning on its tail. Pokédex entries explain that the flame is an indication of its health and emotions, burning vigorously and brightly if its life force is strong and burning all the more strongly if it is enraged, while it wavers when Charmander is enjoying itself and it burns weakly if Charmander is weak. If the flame were to ever go out, its life would end. While it obviously prefers hot environments and things, when it is healthy it can withstand a little water; the flame burns vigorously even if it gets a bit wet, and if caught in the rain, steam is said to spout from the tip of its tail. The flame makes a sound as it burns, but you can only hear it in quiet places. Even the newborns have flaming tails; Unfamiliar with fire, babies are said to accidentally burn themselves.
