The Box is an online tournament series held by Team Liquid on Hungrybox's Twitch channel. The series originally started with The Box and consisted of a weekly (Juice Box) held on Wednesdays as well as a monthly at the end of each month (Lunch Box) limited to Hungrybox's Twitch subscribers. The series was sponsored by Coinbase in February 2022, which shifted focus to the weeklies, now renamed to The Coinbox, with $2,000–$3,000 prize pools. Currently, Ultimate Coinboxes are held biweekly on Wednesdays with a $2,000 prize pool, with different games rotating each month. Most tournaments in the series are region-locked to North America as well as The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Notable Events

Melee Coinbox

While The Coinbox started as an Ultimate series, Melee began being run in February 2023, switching games every week, with Ultimate on Wednesdays and Melee on Tuesdays. However, on November 8th, 2023, following the announcement of the Nintendo Community Tournament Guidelines, Hungrybox announced that Team Liquid would not be seeking a license for Melee Coinboxes due to the usage of Slippi, and that the final Melee Coinbox would be Coinbox #84.[1] There were ultimately 18 Melee Coinboxes held throughout 2023, of which Cody Schwab won an impressive 11 of the 14 that he entered. At times, there were bounties put on Cody Schwab for anyone to claim if they could take a set off him in bracket.

Character Bans

Steve has had mixed legality throughout the history of The Coinbox series. Following Coinbox #51, Steve was indefinitely banned from The Coinbox on March 2nd, 2023, with Hungrybox stating that the discovery of the Phantom MLG tech and the difficulties of banning it on its own, especially online, was the "straw that broke the camel's back."[2] This lasted until January 2024, when Hungrybox announced that Steve would be unbanned on the first Coinbox of each month of 2024, beginning with Coinbox #87, stating that he didn't want to have a complete ban on a character which is legal in the majority of regions around the world.[3] Steve was later fully unbanned on April 1st, 2024, when the series shifted from weekly to biweekly.[4] Steve has ultimately been banned from a total of 24 Coinboxes, those being #53-86, #88, #89, #93, #95, #96, and #97.

Hungrybox has also floated the idea of banning Sonic from The Coinbox, citing the effect that the character has on stream viewership.[5]

After the results of a Twitter poll, Bayonetta was banned from The Coinbox 98 - SM4SH SENDOFF held just days before the Wii U online servers shut down on April 8th.[6] Additionally, custom sizes for the Mii Fighters were banned for the tournament, though default-sized Miis were legal with any custom special moves.

Trivia

  • Some of the weekly tournaments have been played on games outside of Smash.
  • VoiD, Plup, and Sonix are the only players to have won a Box series tournament in multiple games.
    • VoiD's victories were in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl (Juice Box #53) and MultiVersus (Coinbox #26).
    • Plup's victories were in Smash Melee (Coinbox #70) and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 (The SLIME Box #2).
    • Sonix's victories were in Smash Ultimate (first win being Juice Box #4) and Smash 4 (The Coinbox #98).
  • Sonix is the only player to have won a Box series event without dropping a single game, doing so in both The Coinbox #89 and #96.
  • Counter Logic Gaming won every Melee Coinbox while the team was active; with Cody Schwab winning #48, #52, #54, and #56, and Magi winning #50.
  • Cody Schwab won every Melee Coinbox he entered except for #50, where he placed 9th, #66, where he placed 25th using Sheik, and #82, where he again placed 9th after DQ'ing.
  • The Coinbox #62 was decided to have two winners after Nintendo online server maintenance started at the beginning of the Grand Finals reset, preventing it from completing.[7]
