The Elder, Dunga, reveals that this position has very little to do with Riki's worth, but as payment for a large number of debts Riki and his family have accrued. He is forced into Shulk's party as a matter of helping him and Melia fight the Telethia. His fighting style is based on arts capable of inflicting several negative status conditions to the opponents.
