The Akaneia Build, also called "Akaneia" for short, is a gameplay modification of Super Smash Bros. Melee, named after the scrapped Fire Emblem stage from the game. Much like how Smash Remix was to the original Super Smash Bros., The Akaneia Build focuses on adding more content to Melee without changing the gameplay, and with a focus on staying true to the original game's time period and aesthetic. This content consists of new characters, stages, and modes.

Characters[edit]

The character selection screen of The Akaneia Build, with all currently available characters as of v1.0.

All 26 characters (25 if Zelda and Sheik are counted as one character) from Melee appear in The Akaneia Build, unchanged from how they played in the original game, though they have been given new alternate costumes. As of v1.0, there are currently seven new characters added to the mod, consisting of six characters from Melee's successor, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and one newcomer, bringing the total up to 33 (32 if Zelda and Sheik are counted as one character). Notably for the new characters, the announcer will say "Bonus Character" (edited together by splicing the "bonus stage" and "choose your character" voice clips) when they are selected rather than saying their names; they also do not have crowd cheers, though they can earn the "Crowd Favorite" bonus all the same. These characters do not appear as CPUs in any of the single-player modes.

Stages[edit]

In addition to the 29 stages from Melee, Akaneia has introduced 18 new stages as of the release of v1.0. These include all remaining Past Stages from Super Smash Bros., a selection of period-appropriate stages from Brawl, and several original stages. Some Brawl stages have undergone aesthetic changes to reflect the GameCube era, removing elements that originated in later series entries.

As of v1.0, all of these new stages have been moved to a separate "Bonus" page on the stage select screen. The new stages do not appear in any of the single-player modes.

Modes[edit]

Volleyball Gamemode

Four new gameplay modes are available in a "Games" submenu under Vs. Mode which replaces Tournament Mode:

  • All-Star Versus: Players will fight each other with every character in the game. The players are able to select the order the characters appear in and how many stocks each of them have.
  • Tag: A player will have a red arrow appear over them. Attacking another player will cause the arrow to be transferred to them. After a short amount of time, the player with the arrow over them will be instantly KO'd. The last remaining player is the winner.
  • Turbo Melee: Players can instantly cancel their moves when landed, allowing for combos not normally possible elsewhere in the game. Based on Project M's Turbo Mode.
  • Volleyball: Players compete to keep a ball from touching the ground on their side of a net. The first to 11 points takes a set, and the first to three sets wins. This minigame takes place exclusively on a specialized stage, with invisible walls that prevent KOs or movement between sides. As a result, the mode cannot be effectively played against a computer opponent due to their AI not being programmed to understand the rules. This minigame can also be selected from the stage select in addition to the Games menu.

Trophies[edit]

Trophies related to the new characters and stages, as well as new unrelated trophies, were added started in version 0.9. These trophies use new models and have original text descriptions, but aim to emulate the style of Melee's existing trophies. In particular, every fighter has three trophies in the vein of the base game fighters, and there are also new Kirby Hat trophies showcasing Kirby's new Copy Ability hats. As of version 1.0, there are 49 additional trophies: 21 fighter trophies, three Kirby Hat trophies, and 25 remaining miscellaneous trophies.

Music[edit]

The current music now displays when a match is started (akin to Brawl onwards), and aside from extra music tied to the new stages, newly arranged alternate music has been added to base game stages as well. All new music is arranged in the style of Melee by rainbowroadhead and Sarvéproductions.

Easter eggs[edit]

The Akaneia Build contains various hidden easter eggs:

  • The appearance of Charizard's Rock Smash ability may differ based on the stage's terrain, such as smashing a log when standing on wood.
  • If Sonic wins a match where Tails is present or vice-versa, a special voice line will play during their victory animation. Sonic exclaims "See ya later, Tails!" while Tails says "I did it, Sonic!", the lines being taken from Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 respectively.
  • When fighting as Tails on the Green Hill Zone stage, a Tails Chao will replace him in the background.
  • Smashville will feature special elements if played on specific holidays:
    • Blanca has a higher chance to appear on April 1st.
    • Fireworks appear in the background on the 4th of July.
    • A full moon appears during the harvest moon.
    • A chance of snow can happen on Christmas Eve. Jingle can also appear during this time.
    • Jack has a chance to appear on Halloween.
    • A countdown billboard appears on New Year's Eve.
  • The Dedede Arena stage features multiple secret character cameos from the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. Tiff and Tuff will appear in the stands to the left of the jumbotron when Kirby is present in a match, while Escargoon will appear in the same area if Dedede is present. There is also a small chance the N.M.E. Sales Guy will appear on the screen.
  • In the GameCube Realm stage, holding a direction on the D-Pad during selection will apply one of four color palettes for the stage, each of which is based on one of the four colors the GameCube was released in: indigo (up), jet black (right), platinum (down), or spice orange (left).
  • Holding down on the D-Pad on all active controllers during a background transition in GameCube Realm will cause a game of Tennis B to appear. Quickly tapping down again when the minigame says “Ready” will allow the players to control it. The game lasts until either side gets three points, with the losing player being immediately Star KO'd.
  • Holding Z while viewing the trophy collection will activate a secret "Trophy Hunt" minigame, added in v1.0.1. In the minigame, a small number of trophies will appear on the table, and the player must locate as many indicated trophies as possible before time runs out. The remaining time will increase whenever the correct trophy is found, and decrease when the wrong one is selected. The number of trophies on the table increases with each round.

Smash Taunts[edit]

Fichina[edit]

Fox, Falco, and Wolf can trigger Smash Taunts on Fichina that reuse audio from the first Star Wolf encounter in Star Fox 64. Each fighter triggers a different sequence.

Fox Falco Wolf
Wolf: Can't let you do that Star Fox!
Falco: So that's Star Wolf.
Andrew:You'll be sorry you crossed us!
Leon: Andross has ordered us to take you down.
Peppy: I'm not too crazy about those guys.
Slippy: Let's take it to 'em, Fox!
Falco: Come on Fox, let's kick some tail!
Slippy: Enemy ahead! This one's different!
Fox: Just what I need to see. Star Wolf.
Wolf: Playtime is over, Star Fox!
Peppy: Don't get too fast, Falco!
Pigma: Peppy, long time no see!
Peppy: I won't let you get away from me!
Andrew: Andross' enemy is my enemy.
Falco: Let's take them all out!
Leon: Shoot me down, if you can!
Slippy: Hey! Leave me alone!
Andrew: Stick to the pond, froggy!
Peppy: Slippy, get back here!
Slippy: This is really starting to tick me off!
Fox: Slippy, is everything okay?
Slippy: I'm having some trouble here!
Fox: I'm on my way!

Saturn Valley[edit]

Ness and Lucas can trigger Smash Taunts on Saturn Valley referencing the coffee breaks from EarthBound, with the animation being similar to one of Lucas's taunts in Brawl. Successful activation is notated by the "PSI power learned" sound effect, which causes the background to change to a psychedelic blue, the music to change to "You've Come Far, Ness", and one of the following messages to appear:

Message 1 Message 2 Message 3 Message 4 Message 5
What's this?

Taking a breather
are you?

You must have had
a moment of repose,
being able to see
this message.

It seems no one
interrupted you.

I wonder why that
could have been?

What is this message?

How did it get here?

Was it an accidental
press of a button?

Maybe a chance
curiosity...

...or perhaps some
hidden words from
an external source.

In any case, you are
here now, so let us
take time to rest...

Reflect on the time you
have spent over countless
battles... or even just
the current fight.

Has it just begun?

Are you nearing the end?

Perhaps you are still in
the midst of battle
as I scroll by...

Well, I mustn't hold
you too long.

When this break is finished,
the fight will continue
until it reaches its
natural conclusion.

That outcome is up to
you to determine...

I wish you luck...
Taking a break, are we?

That is a bold strategy.

Has the fight become
too much?

Has every split second
decision begun to weigh
on your very ability to
play out the rest
of the game?

Maybe you have been
battling nonstop,
honing your skills,
pushing buttons like some
maestro of mayhem.

Maybe you just got
K.O'd one too many
times and need a
moment to relax.

The reason does not matter.

You have no need to
rush, take all the
time you need.

The game will always
be here, patiently
waiting for your
return.

The battlefield?
Frozen in time.

Your next move?
A mystery.

But not to worry,
whether you return
with a brilliant new
strategy...
or just the same
old button-mashing
enthusiasm...

The fight will welcome
you back all the same.

I wish you luck...
Oh, is it that time again?

Do you remember?

That feeling of playing
for the first time.

Controller in hand,
selecting your favorite
character, fighting on
your favorite stage.

Do you remember the
first time you laid
eyes on this world?

Maybe it was gifted
to you during a
special occasion.

Maybe it was brought
over by a friend, and
the two of you played
for hours on end,
swearing after each game
to just play
"one more".

Perhaps it has been years
since you last played...
and you wish to relive
those memories.

The characters,

the stages,

the chaos,

is it just as you
remember now?

Or perhaps even better.

Go on, dear player.

Relive those memories.

Make new ones.

The fight is waiting, just
as it always has been.

I wish you luck...
It is time for a break.

Do you remember the
first time you saw
these faces?

Mario, the acrobatic and
famous plumber from the
Mushroom Kingdom.

Samus, the relentless
bounty hunter among
the stars.

Marth, the prince
turned Hero-King from
the distant land
of Archanea.

Every face has a
story to tell.

But no matter
their origin, they
are welcomed all
the same.

One day, you
may have to say
goodbye to all
these faces.

But they will
never truly
be gone...

They will remain
just as they
were long ago.

A constant for you,
so that even when
things change, you
can always return
to them.

They will always
be here for you.

Soon this break
will end.

Everything will
be exactly as
it was before...

And it always will
be exactly as
it was before...

You can depend
on that.

I wish you luck...
Ah, taking a moment to rest?

That is rare.

Most players keep fighting
until their fingers ache and
their stocks run dry.

But you?

You are different.

You understand the need
to relax and pace yourself.

Perhaps you were just
taking a moment to reflect
on your last match.

How perfectly your combo
came together or how you
narrowly avoided getting
K.O'd off the side.

Maybe you walked head
first into a fully charged
smash attack because
you lost focus.

It happens.

There is no shame in it.

Or maybe...

You have been playing
so long that time has
lost all meaning.

Should you have stopped
playing long ago?

Maybe you are realizing
that now... But are you
really going to quit?

The next match could be
the one where everything
clicks, after all.

So take your time,
breathe deeply, and
stretch your fingers.

But don't get too
comfortable.

When this break ends the
battle will continue...

I wish you luck...

Credits (developers and contributors)[edit]

Here is the list of development team members and contributors who participated.

Trivia[edit]

  • Lucas' reveal in the Akaneia Build v0.9 release trailer mirrors his reveal in Super Smash Bros. 4, with some differences such as Ganondorf replacing Bowser and Battlefield being swapped for Temple.
  • In v0.9, Lucas, Charizard, and Sonic were unable to be used in Cruel Melee; the lattermost is especially ironic, given a widespread hoax that originated in Electronic Gaming Monthly stating Sonic (and Tails) could be unlocked in Melee by that very mode. This was fixed in the next update.
    • Several nods to the hoax in question have been made by the Akaneia Build team, primarily on social media. After the launch of v0.9, the team tweeted an in-game screenshot replicating the image seen in the hoax, with Lucas replacing Tails. Leading up to the release of v1.0, the team tweeted photos of Sonic defeating various Fighting Wire Frames, even asking if people were counting how many he had defeated. When Tails was added as a playable fighter in 1.0, his and Sonic's spots on the character selection screen would mirror those in the hoax, with Tails at the bottom left and Sonic at the bottom right. The team would eventually tweet another in-game screenshot recreating the image seen in the hoax wholesale, with Sonic and Tails against Luigi and Yoshi.
  • In v1.0, Sprout Tower was added as a stage. Sprout Tower was considered to be added in Melee, but was scrapped due to time constraints.[1]
  • Sarvéproductions based the remix of Green Hill Zone used in The Akaneia Build off of a previous remix they composed for the parody YouTube channel SiIvaGunner five years prior; the original remix contained a melody from "Fuck You" by CeeLo Green, and was itself an original arrangement of a remix on the channel that used the original rendition of the track.
