Article on Bulbapedia Onix (Pokémon)

Onix (イワーク, Iwark) is a creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Origin

Onix is a Rock/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #095 as the "Rock Snake Pokémon". It evolves into Steelix starting from Generation II when traded while holding a Metal Coat. It is notable for being Brock's signature Pokémon.

Rock Throw is a Rock-type move with 50 base power and 90% accuracy introduced in Generation I. It is the weakest Rock-type move with no special effects, and it can be learned naturally by a variety of Rock-type Pokémon at a low level, including Onix in all games since Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. Stat-wise, Onix has the highest Defense stat of all unevolved Pokémon, but its other stats are very poor, particularly its Special Attack and HP.

In Super Smash Bros.

Onix makes a cameo appearance in Pikachu's congratulations screen.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Onix as it appears in Super Smash Bros.

Onix can be summoned by a Poké Ball, using Rock Throw as its attack. When summoned, Onix leaps to the top of the screen and make boulders fall onto the stage. Onix itself can damage other characters as it rises, and the rocks hit opponents with set knockback. Onix's attack does not harm the summoner.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Onix does not return as a Poké Ball summon.

As a stage element

Onix, as seen in the Poké Floats stage.

A large balloon of Onix (in actuality, the 3D model of Onix used in Pokémon Stadium, and its sequel Pokémon Stadium 2, both for Nintendo 64) is one of the many floating platforms that make the Poké Floats stage. It is the second platform balloon to appear, right after Squirtle, and all matches on this stage have Onix making its appearance as a temporary, lengthy semi-soft platform with no ledges to be grabbed. The Onix balloon features rotating body parts, just like a real Onix.
