Yes. The page and revisions are deleted, so you can't view them that way or do a diff. Administrators can access them, but it's a different process. --Porplemontage (talk) 13:30, 16 April 2016 (EDT)

What's going on?[edit]

Why does the wiki have the same format as Wikipedia, resulting in the layout being so messed up that my userpage history takes me directly to my userpage, my CSS is completely useless, and I can't undo edits without rollback? ArticleIcons CSS edit request[edit]

I'm working on a rewrite of Template:ArticleIcons as a list instead of a table, at User:Rigel Kent/ArticleIcons draft. Since it's transcluded on so many pages, some skin-specific CSS should save some bandwidth, while improving display in Vector and Minerva. Would this be okay?

Mediawiki:Monobook.css
#ArticleIcons {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 100;
    right: .6em;
    top: -2.4em;
}
#ArticleIcons ul {
    margin: 0;
}
#ArticleIcons li {
    display: inline;
    margin: 0 1px 0 0;
}
Mediawiki:Vector.css
#ArticleIcons {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 100;
    right: .6em;
    top: -2.8em;
}
#ArticleIcons ul {
    margin: 0;
}
#ArticleIcons li {
    display: inline;
    margin: 0 1px 0 0;
}
Mediawiki:Mobile.css
#ArticleIcons {
    position: absolute;
    right: .6em;
    top: .9em;
}
#ArticleIcons li {
    display: inline;
    margin: 0 1px 0 0;
}
.overlay-enabled #ArticleIcons {
    display: none;
}

Sure, the CSS pages can be used. Has this been approved by the administrators? --Porplemontage (talk) 20:26, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
I left a message at Template talk:ArticleIcons#List instead of table for performance. I got some feedback about simplicity, but no mention of technical problems. One catch, though: if I make the template edit without the CSS edits, the display will look very strange. Even if I put in temporary inline styles, that'll only work for one skin. It might be better if you copy User:Rigel Kent/ArticleIcons draft to Template:ArticleIcons at the same time as the skin-specific CSS edits. ライケン Rigel Kent (talk) 00:14, 24 August 2016 (EDT)
No approval given. Still do not see the need for the change. Serpent SKSig.png King 00:56, 24 August 2016 (EDT)

Some pages load slowly[edit]

These ones, in particular. Why does it happen? Is it because of a glitch in the codes? --My signature's image :v BeepYou My signature's image :v (talk) 18:54, 24 November 2016 (EST)

Hi there, Omega Tyrant told me you're the one who handles the hosting of SmashWiki. Can you tell me how much it is per month? I need a point of reference for a wiki I'm looking to self-host. RoyboyX Talk 02:39, 14 July 2017 (EDT)

It depends on what you want. I assume you would want to rent a host server rather than purchase one, and that can cost anywhere from $10 to $200/mo depending on what you need, here's a decent point of reference. The domain is separate from that, and here is the information on that. Apart from that, MediaWiki is free, so there should be no additional costs. Serpent SKSig.png King 03:06, 14 July 2017 (EDT)

New namespaces[edit]

The community wants new namespaces to put crews and tournaments in. Please do the following:

  • Create a Tournament: namespace, with the same properties as the current Smasher: namespace. (I'm assuming we get corresponding talk namespaces for "free".)
  • Create a Team: namespace, with the same properties as the current Smasher: namespace.
  • Give the Team: namespace an extra name of Crew: (as Image: is to File:).
  • Use moveBatch.php to seed the namespaces with the correct pages (keeping redirects). Once you're ready to do this I will give you the two listfiles over Discord. Assign User:eXemplary Logic as the user (if necessary) and use something like "seeding new namespace" for the reason.
    • I'm not sure if this will move talk pages correspondingly (the reference page I linked to says nothing of it). If it doesn't, I can make a listfile or two to move them as well.

$wgSVGMetadataCutoff[edit]

File:Flag of Ecuador.svg looks to have a problem, and my research suggests that raising $wgSVGMetadataCutoff should fix it. The default value is 256kB, the flag in question is 273kB, and it's one of the most complicated flags by a long shot, so I'd hope it doesn't need to be raised too much. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Different 19:36, 17 February 2019 (EST)

Sure, no problem! It didn't work right away but looks like it did the trick after re-uploading. --Porplemontage (talk) 21:01, 17 February 2019 (EST)

Related enough to not bother with a new section: What's going on with Category:Pages with broken file links? I converted Template:Flag to use .svg instead of .png, and everything's worked fine. But these few pages still appear in the category even though they look fine, they're not listed in the category on the pages themselves, and a null edit doesn't change anything. And it's been two days so any daily maintenance scripts should have fixed the issue. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Indescribable 06:39, 22 February 2019 (EST)

MediaWiki only checks if that category needs to be added or removed when a link is added or removed from the page. You definitely found a scenario where it shows that their implementation of this is flawed (updating the template then creating the redirects). When this happens, adding/removing/modifying a link on the page or template then reverting should clear it up. --Porplemontage (talk) 08:50, 22 February 2019 (EST)

Question about using the tabber on other wikis[edit]

Are you planning on installin the tabber system on your other wikis, (such as Halo or Mario), or are you only going to have the tabber on this one?

Is this even the correct use of a talk page? If I’m not allowed to mention your other wikis here, I’ll remove this promptly Lou Cena (talk) 23:23, 2 March 2019 (EST)

KHWiki has the same system used here and makes heavy use of it. Halo/Destiny have a slightly different system, as seen here for example. Mario I would add it if there is a need/consensus (proposal) for it. --Porplemontage (talk) 23:30, 2 March 2019 (EST) Pikipedia has a different but similar system as well.

3DS stage inages appear to be incompatible with tabber[edit]

I don’t k ow if I made a typo of any sort, but when trying to place 3DS stages in a tabber (such as Pictochat 2, the 3DS image doesn’t ppear to load. I directly copied the file over, so I’m wondering if they’re incompatible wih the tabber. Lou Cena (talk) 22:23, March 25, 2019 (EDT)

Thats not how the tabber works. It can't simply discriminate with a console. Also I know it works beause ive seen it in use on Duck Hunt (stage) Xtra Shulk SSBU foruser.png Talk Edits 07:24, March 26, 2019 (EDT)

A possible issue with Template:Infobox Character General[edit]

Whenever I edited it to update it or add in missing info, the edits would not show up. For example, on the Mii page, I tried to add in the mii universe to the universe section. It didn’t show up when I saved the page, even though the code still says Mii instead of Super Smash Bros. Same thing with Pokémon Trainer. When I added in that only the male trainer was in Brawl, it also didn’t show up. Is there something else on the template I’m missing? Lou Cena (talk) 18:44, June 6, 2019 (EDT)

It only uses the "universe" parameter as a fallback. The first thing it does is check the "name" parameter against this switch statement. Since "Mii" is listed there, that's what it uses. Similar deal with Smash appearances: There is a switch statement in Template:Infobox Character General that determines the appearances based on "name" and only uses the "games" parameter as a fallback. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:57, June 6, 2019 (EDT)
The Mii thing makes sense now. I’ll just leave it up to discussion now. However, for the Smash appearances thing, I can’t find Alph or the Koopalings on there. Is that how they get the freedom to be listed “as an alternate costume for X” instead of adhering strictly to the code? Lou Cena (talk) 19:02, June 6, 2019 (EDT)
Yes, if it's not on there then the parameter will be respected. Porplemontage (talk) 19:10, June 6, 2019 (EDT)

The navigation box and a redirect[edit]

Currently, List of Super Smash Bros. series characters is being discussed to be moved to Fighter. While it does seem like a nearly unanimous decision to move, I’m hesitant on calling it a consensus yet, mostly because of the navigation box on the top left corner of the website, no matter what page you’re on. Currently, it links over to the page we’re discussing moving, and moving that page would cause a redirect. Is there a template that can change that, or is it hard coded into the website? Lou Cena (talk) 15:07, June 24, 2019 (EDT)

Yeah it can be easily changed through MediaWiki:Sidebar. --Porplemontage (talk) 15:08, June 24, 2019 (EDT)

Quick Question[edit]

Hey again, it's Mono. Let's say my signature has reached its character limit and there are still more characters I want to add, and the image in my signature has a considerably long filename. How would I go about shortening it? Do I have to reupload it again with a different name, and is there a method to delete the original one? Monokuro My profile signature icon, taken from Roy's SSBU article. [talk | contribs] 22:39, January 9, 2020 (EST)

Set your sig to:
{{SUBST:User:Monokuro/sig}}
And check the "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)" box. --Porplemontage (talk) 22:46, January 9, 2020 (EST)
"Treat signature" box has been already been checked, set my sig to that. My name's in small caps now, but I need the pipe character between talk and contribs to be replaced with a "•", and two hyphens to be placed before my name. Also, do you mind me asking how the code works? I find it quite interesting. --Monokuro My profile signature icon, taken from Roy's SSBU article. [talk | contribs] 23:04, January 9, 2020 (EST)
You can edit it here. I added the dot. Hitting the signature button in the editor toolbar automatically adds two hyphens before it so you don't necessarily need to include that in the sig itself. --Porplemontage (talk) 23:07, January 9, 2020 (EST)
Oooh, okay. So it's essentially a substitution in which you can just reference that. Thanks for letting me know about this, it helps a lot. --monokuro My profile signature icon, taken from Roy's SSBU article. [talkcontributions] 23:23, January 9, 2020 (EST)

CSS help[edit]

Hey Porple, I'm not that experienced with css so I was wondering: You know how in recent changes and page histories staff users have different colors for their username links (green for admins, yellow for bcrats, etc.), and for my css I was wanting to add colors to usernames of users who have rollback (specifically #1f72ba for OmegaToad64).

I got it to work before to a minor extent (only on the top of the recent changes page but not anywhere else) but it doesn't show up anymore. Do you happen to know how I can make username colors in my personal css? You can just put the code here and I'll add it myself if posdible, thanks in advance Image for my signiture icon. Why hidden categories?[edit]

I'm wondering what the purpose is to converting most/all of the "wiki meta" categories to be "hidden".

Also the indirection you created from "Pages with broken file links" to "Articles with broken file links" means Template:MaintenanceLinks no longer reports the right number (now it only counts its one sub-category). Toomai Glittershine ??? The Sphere 10:52, March 21, 2020 (EDT)

Well, I wanted to have a way to distinguish between normal "content" categories and categories about the article itself and what it needs, so that the latter group doesn't get lost within the main group. I decided to use MediaWiki's built-in hidden categories feature, but alter it from the default behavior a bit. By default, hidden categorizes are hidden to everyone, and you have to go into your preferences to show them. I didn't like that users had to dig into their preferences to see them, so I made them hidden only to anonymous users and shown to logged-in users by default. I changed the name from Hidden categories to Meta categories since they're not super hidden if all users see them. The reason I kept them hidden to anons is the idea that 99% of anon users are just readers and not showing categories about the article itself sort of "cleans up" the categories for them and removes extra info mostly geared towards editors (another reason I kept some hiding function was so that the HIDDENCAT magic word still made some sense in how we're using it). Now, we have a lot of flexibility here. We could show the meta categories to anons as well so the only benefit is separating them out, or put it back to how it was. And I fixed the maintenance count :) --Porplemontage (talk) 12:47, March 21, 2020 (EDT)

I attempted to merge two sections on Young Link (SSBU) by removing the header for one of them. However, I was unable to remove the header, and had to turn it into a subsection instead. What I find odd is that I was able to remove it before when I wrongly thought the consensus was reached, so I’m wondering if something changed recently to not allowed anonymous users to remove section headers. 72.203.118.154 03:17, May 26, 2020 (EDT)

It should work now. --Porplemontage (talk) 08:28, May 26, 2020 (EDT)

How can I start a proposal?[edit]

Hi Porplemontage, I am curious on how I am supposed to make proposals. I am keeping my idea top secret for the foreseeable future but can I write the proposal on general proposals or make an entire new page. Thanks. Hi, just go to Forum:Proposals and add new topic with the proposal name. It sounds major enough to warrant its own page. --Porplemontage (talk) 12:32, June 6, 2020 (EDT)
Oh Ok, So my topic sounds major enough right?S3AHAWK said ketchup wonTo use for signature if Ketchup winsKetchup signature 14:11, June 6, 2020 (EDT)
If you're talking about a new tech feature then yes. --Porplemontage (talk) 14:42, June 6, 2020 (EDT)

IPs[edit]

I think it would be prudent to disable IP editing for a few days or a week. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Emissary 10:55, July 5, 2020 (EDT)

Do you know why the time says 00:09 even though it is 22:09? I don't. JustSomeCloudMain who ain't interested (talk) 00:10, July 19, 2020 (EDT)

Due to time zones. Set this --Porplemontage (talk) 00:14, July 19, 2020 (EDT)

I just saw this, thanks btw. JustSomeCloudMain who ain't interested (talk) 22:56, July 19, 2020 (EDT)

RfA Protection[edit]

Since you protected the SW:RFA page so that only autoconfirmed users can make RfAs, should SmashWiki policy be updated so that only autoconfirmed users can make RfAs since the autoconfirmed users page states that non-autoconfirmed users can technically make them? ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is bad for me 18:13, August 28, 2020 (EDT)

The protection doesn't change much since non-autoconfirmed users already didn't have the ability to create an RfA subpage. Being able to add themselves to the list but not create the subpage was a mismatch whereby a user could get stuck halfway through the process (which has happened in the past). So now the abilities are proudly synced up. Whether it should be an actual rule or not is up for debate, but as it is now they just need someone to help them with it. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:40, August 28, 2020 (EDT)
All I noticed was that non-autoconfirmed users cannot make pages during a yellow status or higher but can make pages during a green status however. ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is made in America 00:34, August 29, 2020 (EDT)

Search[edit]

I was wondering if the old way of searching (that is to say, by page source instead of actual text) could be brought back as an option. RickTommy 07:18, February 1, 2021 (EST)

That functionality is built-in, what you'll want to do is use the insource: search paramemter, for example. --Porplemontage (talk) 07:35, February 1, 2021 (EST)

Watchlist expiry[edit]

Could you please consider enabling watchlist expiry? The relevant config is $wgWatchlistExpiry. This would be useful for cases like only watching an active talk page conversation. Thanks in advance. ihaveahax (talk) 18:48, February 1, 2021 (EST)

Bots on Recent Changes[edit]

I noticed PorpleBot and SmashWiki Bot both did runs recently, however none of their edits show in RecentChanges even though I enabled the setting to view bot edits. --CanvasK (talk) 09:00, February 11, 2021 (EST)

Bit of a necro-post, but second-verse same as the first deal. I checked both the JavaScript and non-JavaScript layout and they're the same. They appeared when you fixed it last time I mentioned it, but at some point it stopped working. Actions that are recorded in the logs will appear (such as SWBot's recent protection spree and PB's category renaming), but none of the text edits appear. --CanvasK (talk) 22:38, August 26, 2021 (EDT)

Sig[edit]

So hi I am Pokemon trainer Green, you may know me on the mario wiki as Bubbasour11 just wondering if I can make my sig if I am not a autoconfirmed user? (here is me on the mario wiki: https://www.mariowiki.com/User:Bubbasour11) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pokemon trainer Green (talkcontribs) 12:47 EST, July 8, 2021

You can create a custom signature in preferences at any time. see SW:SIG for the rules. Serpent SKSig.png King 14:34, July 8, 2021 (EDT)

Um so no I can not make one untill I can make a page so I half to put in the code untill I can. OK. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pokemon trainer Green (talkcontribs) 17:26 EST, July 9, 2021

You don't need to make a page to make a sig. Go to Preferences, User Profile, Signature. You should be able to customize your sig there. You'll also probably want to select the "Treat signature as wikitext" button. Additionally, using templates in your sig is not allowed nor is using mainspace images. You can read more about it here. --CanvasK (talk) 17:35, July 9, 2021 (EDT)

About night mode...[edit]

To begin, I wasn't necessarily bothered by that "glitch" (or perhaps it was a test?) with the pages showing up with white-on-black CSS. I think night mode's value goes beyond aesthetics; it's easier on the eyes in low-light situations. So I was wondering, would you ever consider actually implementing it as an option for users to toggle in their preferences? I wanted to see your thoughts; I don't know much about CSS, so assuming it's not more work than it's worth, I think it would be a nice touch. Blue Ninjakoopa 20:45, November 2, 2021 (EDT)

Yes, the experimental night mode that you saw can be enabled here. --Porplemontage (talk) 20:49, November 2, 2021 (EDT)
It looks great so far! Thanks! Blue Ninjakoopa 23:02, November 2, 2021 (EDT)

Template optimization[edit]

I've been working on one of the trophy templates to expand its functionality and I noticed that one method (with no nested if-statements) has a higher "preprocessor visited node count" but significantly lower "post-expand include size" compared to another method (with nested if-statements). When used 58 times: preproc: 14,648 (current) vs 16,618 (method 1) vs 16,150 (method 2); post-expand: 280,460 (current) vs 306,023 (method 1) vs 382,466 (method 2)). My question is: should I prioritize reducing one value more than the other? Or any of the other values in the profiling data? Between the two, the "CPU time usage" deviates within 0.08 seconds and the resulting HTML difference is less than 100 bytes. --CanvasK (talk) 08:13, September 8, 2022 (EDT)

I would say that reducing CPU time usage is ultimately best, but that value will vary a certain percentage on every parse. In this case the difference seems insignificant, so I would just go with whichever syntax you like better. --Porplemontage (talk) 11:19, September 8, 2022 (EDT)
