Magicant (Japanese: マジカント Magicant) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. It is Ness's home stage, and it is where he is fought when being unlocked. The stage is unlocked along with him.

Origin

Magicant in Mother/EarthBound Beginnings.
Magicant as it appears in Mother

Magicant is an area in Mother, in which Queen Mary resides, for whom Ninten collects the Eight Melodies, and exists only in her mind. A similar location of the same name would also appear in EarthBound as a land in Ness' mind, accessed by collecting the Eight Melodies, in which he rids all evil within him. This stage is based off Magicant in Mother, but contains elements from EarthBound as well. The design of the houses seen towards the back of the platforms are based off the houses of Magicant in Mother; however, the house on the right platform is based off the Flying Men's house from Magicant in EarthBound.

Some of the residents of Magicant, in both Mother and EarthBound, are the five Flying Men. Flying Men are bird-like creatures with human qualities that Ninten and Ness can recruit with them to help fight against enemies in Magicant. The Flying Men are said to represent Ness and Ninten's courage. When a Flying Man is killed in battle, a tombstone cross will appear next to their home, and another will appear for every Flying Man killed until all five are dead. In this stage, Flying Men can appear from their house on the right side of the stage and help fight potential enemies. The design of the Flying Men themselves is directly based off their 2D sprite in EarthBound. When a Flying Man dies, a tombstone cross appears by the house.

In EarthBound, Ness's progress through areas was sometimes impeded by statues shaped like octupuses, and the only way to get rid of them was by using the Octopus Eraser Machine item invented by Apple Kid. These statues occasionally spawn on the stage and disappear on their own. While the American version of EarthBound replaced the octopus statues with those of large pencils, the American version of SSB4 does not make this alteration.

The giant tomatoes that also occasionally appear are a reference to the giant tomatoes seen in Magicant from EarthBound.

Mobile Sprouts are enemies in EarthBound that are bipedal sprouts that can walk. In this stage, they have a chance of appearing and serve as moving platforms, but they do not actually harm players.

Also in EarthBound, Dr. Andonuts, Jeff's father, created the Sky Runner for air transportation. Initially used to rescue Ness and Paula from Threed's graveyard, the group later reuses the ship in order to travel to Winters to meet up with Dr. Andonuts again. The Sky Runner sometimes appears on the stage, disappearing on its own a short time later.

Dungeon Man, a companion that originally helped Jeff on his adventure through Winters, also appears on the stage; he indirectly appears in the large human-dungeon hybrid he created in the game, and this large statue occasionally scrolls by on the lower end of the screen.

Contrary to their appearances on the stage, neither the Sky Runner nor Dungeon Man appear in Magicant in EarthBound.

Layout

There are several platforms located around the stage, with a relatively larger one in the middle and two elevated platforms above it. Under the main platform is a tree which can also be stood on. There is also a small platform under the main platform. Occasionally mobile sprouts will appear on the main platform and will act as moving platforms.

Flying Men can sometimes appear on the right side of the stage, in front of the house situated on the platform. If a character walks by one, the Flying Man will fight for the player, akin to an Assist Trophy. The Flying Man can be defeated by other characters by knocking him off the stage, and following this, a small tombstone spawns in the background, in front of the house; after some time, another Flying Man will spawn in the same location, repeating the process. After five Flying Men have been defeated, they will not spawn for the rest of the match.

Occasionally in the background of this stage, a "rip" in sky opens and shows points in Ninten's and Ness's adventures in their respective games. These events include:

Magicant

A magical world in Mother and EarthBound, brought to life by the memories of certain characters. In this game, Magicant is a cloud stage where giant tomatoes, metal octopuses, and even the Sky Runner may appear. Even the hulking Dungeon Man may show up. What an unusual battlefield...

Trivia

  • Magicant is the first EarthBound stage to be based on a location from Mother.
  • A portion of the back of the Sky Runner is missing.
  • If Kirby uses Final Cutter on the very edge of the Sky Runner, he will begin quickly spasming back and forward.
  • In both Ness's unlock battle and in the All-Star Mode, the Flying Men do not spawn.
  • Flying Men were originally intended to be in 3D, and both a 3D model and a 2D sprite were developed; however, the 2D sprite was chosen. Masahiro Sakurai stated in a weekly issue of Famitsu magazine that the reason the 2D sprite was chosen to lessen strain on the 3DS hardware. [1]
