Mew (ミュウ, Mew) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise. It has appeared as a very rare Pokémon, and its rarity depends on the number of Pokémon during the release of each game in the Super Smash Bros. series: 1/151 in Super Smash Bros., 1/251 in Melee, 1/493 in Brawl, and 1/721 in Smash 4.

In Super Smash Bros.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Mew makes its first appearance in Super Smash Bros.. It will not do anything, but will instead remain on the screen for a few seconds, then fly off. It can be completely unnoticed when it comes out of a Poké Ball if the fighting is intense, since it doesn't harm anyone. Mew's appearance is rare since it is a legendary Pokémon. If Mew is summoned by the player in the 1P Game, the player is awarded the Mew Catcher bonus, worth 10,000 points. Mew has a 1-in-151 chance of appearing in this game. 151 happens to be the total number of Pokémon at the time when Smash Bros. came out.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Mew reappears in Super Smash Bros. Melee, again flying off instead of attacking. The only difference in the "attack" is that Mew appears in its bubble. No character is harmed by Mew's "attack" in Melee either. Mew can only be seen if all characters are unlocked. This makes Mew one of only two unlockable Pokémon in Melee, the other being Celebi. Both have a 1-in-251 chance of appearing in this game. 251 happens to be the total number of Pokémon at the time when Melee came out. The first time the player sees a Mew, they will get a notice saying that it was their first time seeing it.

As a trophy

Mew is featured as a collectible trophy; to attain it, the player has to clear the All-Star Mode on Hard or Very Hard difficulty, though the player is allowed to use continues.

Mew is an extremely rare Pokémon that has been seen by only a few people. Information on every Pokémon in the world is contained in Mew's cell structure, so it has the ability to use any and all TMs and HMs. Some Pokémon scholars believe Mew to be the ancestor of all existing Pokémon, but the idea is debatable.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Mew returns yet again in the third installment. This time though, it drops a CD before flying away. It is the rarest of all the Pokémon. After the first time the player sees it, they will get a notice saying that it was their first time (like in Melee).

Mew appears at a rate of 1/493. 493 happens to be the total number of Pokémon as of Diamond and Pearl, including Shaymin and Arceus, who hadn't even officially been revealed by Nintendo yet when Brawl originally came out.

If the player has collected all of the CDs, Mew will instead drop stickers, like Jirachi does.

As a Trophy

Mew also returns as a collectible trophy, though unlike in Melee, the Mew trophy is found randomly, either by obtaining it in the Coin Launcher, or finding it in The Subspace Emissary or the rest areas of All-Star and Boss Battles.

Mew Dropping an Item on the Wii U Version

Mew returns in Super Smash Bros. 4, as either a Poké Ball or Master Ball summon. It drops a random trophy or Custom Part as it flies away, taking over the role of Celebi from Brawl. In the Wii U version, it may also drop CDs. This is the first game where Mew does not need to be unlocked.

Mew

Mew is a Pokémon previously thought to be extinct but rediscovered by Dr. Fuji. This Legendary Pokémon doesn't often show itself to humans, so it is considered quite lucky to see one. In Smash Bros., Mew will appear and then use Fly to sail away, leaving behind a gift. Thanks, Mew!

Origin

Mew was introduced in Generation I. However, it cannot be obtained through regular gameplay, and thus the only way to obtain it legitimately is by events. In most of these events, Mew is obtained without fighting it. The only event to ever have the player encounter and fight Mew is in Pokémon Emerald, in the event where the player gets the Old Sea Map, which takes the player to Faraway Island and encounter Mew.

Mew's appearance in a bubble is based on its appearance in Pokémon Snap. The move Mew uses in its appearances in Smash is Fly; since Mew is capable of learning all TM and HM moves, it can learn the move from HM02 in all games.

Trivia

• Mew, Goldeen, and Snorlax are the only Pokémon to appear as Poké Ball Pokémon in all four games.
